NEW YORK HERALD, SUNDAY, OUTOBER 14, 1866. pee sire ooo Chargé é' Affaires in the usual ap- ty ss carat ote. ~ ply SEE Claimante. A uumber of gentlemen representing claimants for indemnity from Eugiand waited to-day upon the Iresi- dent and urged upon him the mecessity of taking im- mediate action. The delay of the British government in responding to the just demands of our government was freely commented upon, and it is reported that the President expreased himself favorably inclined to their Views. It was suggested that a demand should be im- mediately made for indemnity withiu thirty days, with A threat thas in case is was not complied with, Canada should be seized and held as security for the payment of the claim. The political friends of the President here ‘are generally in favor of euch action as » question of policy, They argue that a foreign war would havea ten- dency to heal the bitterness of feeling between the radicals and conservatives. There ig no doubt that the Preai- dent considers the claim a just one, but dreads incurring the expense of a war from financial reasous. He is ‘anxious to reduce the taxation and restore the currency ag aoon as possible to a specie basis. At the same time the friends of a compulsory demand for Immediate sc- tion on the part of England in response to our demand for indemaity openly say that such a demand will sbortiy be made and an army ordered ta the Canadian border iu tess than eight weoke, Financial Matters. The Marie Stuart Matinee. Ristori's Girst matmée tu New York was @ great euc- cow. The little French theatre waa filled yesterday forenoon to its utmost ‘capacity to witness “Maric Swart.” Even the proscenium boxes were crowded; and though the sudience waa teas fashionably dressed than at tho eveuing representations, it was, nevertheless, eppreciative and critical, A noticeable feature was the ‘large foreign element Present. Books of the words were comparatively fow and far between, and the rusting sound of turning over the leaves was seldom heard suflicieatly to cause annoy- ance. It is bard to got up enthusiasm in a theatre in the day- time, Morning audiences are always cooler aud more phiegmatic than evening audiences. There is @ sort of owlish atmosphege about a matinée. You have neither gaslight nor good honest daylight, but something between the two, which is perplexing and somewhat depressing in its effect. The frst two acts, in which Ristori bas little to aay or do, passed off with a quietude amounting almost to apathy; but in the third act, where Queen Elizabeth, losing ber way in the chase, is conducted to Fothoringay by Leicester and Talbot, and there encounters the un- happy Queen of Scots, Ristori's magnificent acting swept away the barrier of reserve and called forth tumultuous applause. The ice once broken the eym- pathies and eager attention of the audience were never again lost, and the drop curtain finally fell upon a per- fect ovation. The management acted wisely in the Grst instance in placing Ristori’s Marie Stuart before the American public previous to her Elizabeth, They showed equal judgment yesterday in giving proference to the former play in their first matinée, and reserving Klmabeth for the second, ‘The two pleces, dramatised by different hands, clash together. Elizabeth may follow Marie Stuart, bat Mario Stuart following Elizabeth is apt to suggest unfavorable comparisons. It is no disparagement to Signora Cottin, who, in Marie Stuart, enacts the part of the Virgin Queen, to say that her Elizabeth contyste unfavorably with that of Adelaide Ristori, Unfortunately, the play ts $0 coustroctad that Elizabeth fills almost as promi- nent a piace as the unhappy Scottish Queea. Two Ristoris are required to do the subject justice—at any rate to those who have a recollection of Ristori’s conception before their mind's eye. ‘There are curious inconsistencies between the two pieces, in Klizabeth of Bnygland, the Queen signs Mary Stuart's deat warrant alone in her chamber, leaves it on the table, and her secretary seving it there takes it away and burries it into exccation against Vlizabeth’s own wish, as she subsequently protests, Im Mary Stuart, the death warrant is signed in format eonac'l, and is handed over by the Queen to Burleigh and Leicester to be carried into effect. The historical anachron ms which amuse as in Elizabeth are almost equalled im Mary Stuart. The Dean of Peterborough and every one who did take a teadiar part in the closing Acones of the Life of that most fair and most unfortunate of sovercigns are conspicuously absent in the play, and almost every one who wat not there is introduced into the scene, The Queen is represented as Unding her way from London to Fotheriagay Castle im the course of a day's huat, which, considering that the distance between these two points is at least a hundred And fifty miles, says much for the se of herself and her steed. But these, aftor all, ace mere minor matters, They might be of moment if e'ther piece were pat forward historically accurate; but, as thie i# not so, they quickly pass out of sight. The audience yesterday came to see Kistort, not to study history. Im the pathotic acenes wich end the play the whole house was stirred with deep emotion. Ristori’s fervor seemed to inspire each and all of her associates; ana a finer tableau thaa the closing scene could scarcely be imagined. ‘The cast was tho same a6 in provious representations already criticised in the HskaLo. Ristori was admjrabiy sustained throaghott, : TH e A id RI « od Lt. Stade ‘Theatre. Alt students of Listory are aware thal Shakspere, with alt hie greatness, was something of a sycophant. He made Richard the Third ten times the monster he realiy was to please the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth, grand-daughter of Henry, Ear! of Richmond, the arch foe of the house of York and the putative slayer of the Duke of Gloster. The Duke, before and after his coronation, was rare scoundrel enough for any dramatic purpose; bat he was no such vuigar villain and swaggering rufian as most actors have seen fit to make him. They have chosen from time imme- morial to represent him as a humpbacked Blue Beard, whose face and form corresponded to bis moral deformity. ‘The truth ws he was a handsome fellow, and a luxu- rious and effeminate prince, like his brother Edward ibe Fourth, with all the breeding and culture bis period was capable of giving bim, bat so ambitious aod vnprincipled that he permitted puthing to stand be. teen him and the object of bis desire. Even the oleva- tion of one shoulder above the other would not have been noticed in him, had aot persoval beauty been pro- verbial in the members ot his house. ‘Truthfully and faitntulty did Bogamil Dawison repre. nevt Richard in person and character on the occasion of his benefit last evening at the Stadt theatre, That im- mense houre was crowded in every part by the best claw of our German fellow citizens, added to a few cultivated Amoricans. The tregedy, we believe, was Schiege!'s transiation, which many of the Germans, with ebarming conceit, declare superior to the original. Then the piquant, sparkling dialogue which introduces us to the reckless dissipated body guard of the Queen serves as a pleasing variety to tho musie, In the frat act we have a hunting chorus, an air descriptive of the pleagures of the chase, a boisterous meeting of mu: eers, a choleric old officer of the days of Henry 1V., and a love intrigue set on foot by the involuntary Mephiatopheles of the opera, Hector de Biron.
