RISTORI. First Representation ef Phwdra. Ristori appeared last night in Racine's tragedy of Phaedra. Much was expected from the great tragedienne in this diffcult part, and the expectation was not disap- pointed. A more splendid piece of acting has rarely been witnessed upon the American stage. Premising that the subject of the tragedy bas nothing to attract, but everything to suppress, any sym- pathy which the audience may feel with the leading character, the superb acting of Ristori overcomes in a great measure the repulsiveness which an unnatural passion must necessarily inspire. It is difficult to con- ceive anything more horrible than the story of Phwdra's unboly love for the gon of her husband, -or more terrible than the jealous hate which prompts her to denounce him to his father, and cause his banishment, and death. But, as the ancient poets haye created thie monstrous fiction, and the great French dramatist, Racine, has given itto us in a mew form which demands the genius of a Ristori or a Rachel to interpret it in the intenaity that can alone make the picture faithful, we can overlook the -horror of the conception in the perfection of its rendition. The impersonation of Phaedra by Ristori suggests a com- Parigon with that of Rachel. It was the great part -of the latter artiet, the one upon which, perhaps, her dramatic’ reputation was chiefly based. The Phedra of Rachel was terrible, that of Ristori issublime, Rachel's Phwdra sought to influence the man upon whom her love was fixed, as it were, by the magnetism of her nature. She did not condescend to use any of the persuasive powers with which women aasail the heart they seck to win, The Phwdra of Ristori is more like the woman, which nature and not art has created. In the scene where she avows her love for Hippolytus, she not only appeals to him in passionate language, but lays her hand affectionately upon his shoulder with a fond and delicate caress that almost changes his cold repulse into @ warmer sentiment,’ which is instantly repressed when he remembers that the beautiful and impassioned suitor is his father’s wife, and the love that she lays at his feet is incestuous and abhorrent. This is ‘one of the finest passages in the play, drawing out Ristori’s greatest power, and equalled only by the scene in the (irst act where Phadra involuntarily declares her Jove for Hippolytus to Enone—hesitating to declare the name of the object of her passion—the denunciation of her confidante in the fourth act, when remorse over- whelins her, and the grand finale, in which her confes- sion to Theseus of her false charges against his son pre- codes ner death. From this brief allusion to the thread of the story, which is not unfamiliar to our readors, it may be seen how little sympathy there is with the cbaracter of Phadra; yet Ristor! invests it with an absorbing interest, which overcomes the repulsiveness naturally attached to acharacter in itself unuatural and abhorrent. In Medea we have many scruples in the way of our sympathy with the character to overcome, In Elizabeth wo find vanities indictiveness to palliate; hypocrisy and cru- attribnte to hereditary failings. In Mary Stu- art the sufferings of the martyr overshadow the sinsof the erring woman, In Judith the sublime self-sacrifice of the patriot covers the crimo of the murderess; but in Phwdra there is nothing to redeem her from the stain of the most degrading passions and the basest subterfuge to which a cowardly and evil nature can resort. And yet, with all this, Ristori wins the sympathy of her audience for the heroine of the story, and commands the tribute of applause again and again as each terrible scene is enacted. Although there are two or three parts which might be claimed a3 leading ones in this tragedy, Ristori, of course, absorbs the greater portion of the interest; but we would not be just if we did not give credit to Signora Cottin’s rendition of Enone, upon which a good deal of the best potnts of Ristori’s acting in the principal scenes @epends. it was in every respect equal to the occa- sion, and worthy of unqualified praise. From the re- ception which Phasdra met with last night its repoti- tion, of course, become necessary. Those who have not econ it have in reserve the enjoyment of one of Ristori’s ‘grandest efforts. AMUSEMENTS. Brondwny Theatre. The oMments, however adverse, seem to havo little @ffeet upon the theatres in which Maggie Mitchell plays ‘She has for years been @ prime favorite in the Metropolis, and her popularity appears to increase at -ery new engagement. The secret of her success lies in her ontire naturalness and her good sense of choosing parts for which she is fitted. Had she attempted what is known a8 the legitimate drama she would have rested so long under acloud that few persons would have recognized her Stellar position, and fewer still have conceded it to he Instead of essaying to talk fustian in blank verse, after the manner of the stately Roxana and imperious Statira, she elected less ambitious, bat far moro interesting, réles, She not only played, but became Fanchon, Little Barefoot and Marie, Her delightful freshness, charming naiveté, and captivating abandon made her peerless in this country in ber peculiar line of characters. Few of those who witness her efforts feel inclined to criti ctse her; for she is #0 sympathetic that criticism is out of the question, You apply rules to her no more than you froula to the captivating coquetries of the fair anonyma who has enanared your peace. You her as she and thank th Gods that she is not otherwise. W have seen most stage representations tame and tedious, play woman with their eyes, and laugh like school boys over her pathos and her drollery. We have not infrequently detected ourselves on the eve of exercising the lachrymal glance over some of her delicious bits of nature. No one can help confessing that she, above any other actress of the time, has the power of winning upon—almost mag- netizing—her audiences; and she fairly deserves to be regarded asthe most popular comedienne in the country. Last evening she appeared for the fifth time as Mari, in the Pear! of Savoy. Domestic dramas for the woek past, like theol ah novels, are insipid to the lant de- gree. The Pearlof Savoy is an exception, making up 1n improbability for wbat one might consider its right- ful inheritance of dvlness. The fair Maggie, howover, makes us forget the abanrdities of the play by her capi- tal rendering We laugh and weep with her, and ro. Joice at her final happiness—(Marie certainly deserves it after preserving her virtue under circumstances in which all the vestals would have failed)—as over that of a personal friend, whose trials and sufferings have made her more dear than prosperity had ever shewn. Thalia Theatre. A small but enthusiastic audienge assembled at this theatre Inst night to witness the representation of Die Marquise de Villette, one of Mre. Birchpfeifter's most famous preductions, The piay is so familiar to the German theatre golng public that it is quite unnecessary to allude to the plot. Miss Hesse undertook the title réle, In the scone in which she tells her aunt that she loves Bolingbroke, she was unnecessarily loud, forgetting that a great artiste can affect far more by a simpie movement than by the most violent vocal exeriion. However, she inter- proted the character well on tue whole, Mr. Haerting justified his reputation as Henry Bolingbroke, and proved that this réle is his forte, ‘Mr. Loimann, as Duke of Orleans lacked noblesse, Le failed to comvey the impression that the proudest blood of Franco flowed in his veins, and Mr. Klotz, as Uuke de Maine, was hardly in his element. ‘He se ted to forget that tho character whom be impersonated was lame ac ording 19 history, and, although an o°casional halt in bi {ble it was Impossible to determine w aether tl result of accident or intention.
