a FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Faipay, Sept. 28—6 P. M. The speculative excitement of yesterday was intensi- fed to-day on the Stock Exchange, and there was an active demand for nearly al! the leading railway shares. New York Central eolipsed even Erie for a time in point of animation, but the latter is the most strongly sup- ported stock on the list, owing to the demand from those anxious to secure proxies to influence the forthcoming election, and also to the fact that a large amount of stock usually floating in Wall street is withheld by parties who intend voting upon it, This state of ‘things will continue till the day of election—the ‘Mth of October—and meanwhile, as @ mattcr of course, the demand for proxies will continue. Various aurmises are bazarded and statements male as to the probable result of the election and the future m: - ment of the road, but these are of little importance ‘beyond serving to indicate that a vigorous contest is in Progress, There is mo change to record in the condition of tho money market, Loans are offered frooly at 4 per cent to first class stock houses and some of the leading dealers in government securities continue in a position to supply tnomselves at 2% a 3 At the same time the supply of commercial paper is so light that all but a few lenders have ceased to regard discounting a8 @ means for the employment of capital. Large amounts are held unemployed by the banks, and the surplus of loanable funds is increasing rather than diminishing, First class paper is in request at 5 per gent for short dates, and 53% for long dates, Tho ‘Western cities are still moderately well supplied with money, and a Chicago journal of Wednesday says: ‘Tho demand for money has larvely fallen off since Saturday, the speculators now requiring but little, and commission men asking but few advances to enable them to fill country orders for corn. fhe country do- mand still continues, howevor, and considerable money 4s going forward to the country, especially to Wisconsin, Minnesota and Northern Iowa, fo assist in the movement ‘of the new wheat crop, There is, also, a fair but not pone demand for money from general sources. The oan market is comparatively easy, and, for legitimate purposes, accommodations ‘are Teadily’ procured upon paper. Eastern exchange is in tale sup ly, but the demand is 80 good that scarcely any of beta tes have much of a surplus to sell, and rates between the banks are entirely nominal, at from $0c, to $1 discount per ‘thousand. Counter rates have experienced no chance, and remain steady at fof 1 per cent discount buying, and par selling. At the early session of the open stock board the chief interest of the market was centred in Erie, which sold at 783¢; but there was a brisk demand for all the leading railway shares, At the first rogular board the market ‘was buoyant and excited, and the volume of transac- tions was unusually large. S. BENTDON, Auditor, Respecting the Western Union Telegraph Company's stock a Rochester paper, evidently officially inspired, re- mark: In view of the success of the Atlantic cableand the complications to which tt may give rise, the directors of the Western Union Company, at a recent moeting iv the city ot New York, adopted a ‘pian permittin ers of Extension stock as shoul! soo fit t selves of it prior to February 1, 1867, render their stock and take the bonds company in its stead. The terms on such exchange may be made are briefly as follows: — The payments hitherto made on that stock amonnt to $25 per share, To this is added $2 for interost, making $27 per share, A call of $5 per share waa made, payable on or before December 1, 1866, which would make Lhe aggregate of pershare, At that rate the company proposes to receive and retire the stock, issuing the bonds of the yat ninety cents on the dollar in Neu of it, The exchange may be made now, or at any time prior to February 1, on paying the call above referred to—the bonds to draw {nterest from the date of exchangs. Itis supposed that the cal! now made will complete the Hine; and farther, that telegrsphic commu uation wiih Cana and Japan will be extablishea by the time the Extension line is completed, Tiose two coun. tries alone will furnish all the business nm cossary to make the Extension en erprige one of the most success. ful ever devised. It will be understood, of course, Unt it is optional with every stockholder to exchango for bonds or to retain his stock.” In estimating the future of the cotton trado in this country the following statistics of the condition of the Liverpool market, taken from the Cotton Brokers’ Circular of June 21 and Sepieaibor 6 will be found use. ful :-—~ In Il weeks, June.
