SARATOGA RACES. ZHIRD DAY OF THE MENTING. Another Large Assemblage of Fashion and Capital Spert. THREE FINE RACES YESTERDAY Bayswater, Arcola and Bush's Filly the Winners. ke. hee ke. ‘The third day of the Saratoga race meeting was as suc- Pessful in every respect as its predecessors, and the ex- it attending the sport was unabated, After the ball om Wednesday night the good people have made Saratoga their sojourning place fora time, and who are alive to everything in the shape of amusement, awoke yesterday morning in a very fit @ondition indeed for any number of pints of the cooling Sraters of Congress. A little mild dissipation in the shape quadrilies and vaniHa ices is exousable in the face of phe fact that Congress and Columbian waters bubble gaily hard by. So from nine to eleven yesterday morning Pho ladies thronged tho springs, making the wryest of Paces at each consecutive glass handed them, but drain- ng it off as a religious duty, After this came breakfast, pnd then tho majority retired to dress for the races. It notable that many of those ladies who went to the did not go to the races, but notwithstanding this the was again full, and the toilettes of the ladies were ponspicious, The same enthusiasm was manifest, the game interest in the betting evinced by the ladivs, pend the sams delight was shown, in the same ‘manner, when the gallant horses struggled at the @nish for the honor of a place, As each shining: favorite was led out the ladies were enthusiastic Jn discussing hia points of beauty, and the utmost @nxiety was shown wo get a good view of the start. uring the actual races the excitement on the stand was Antense, the gentlemen shouting “Hats off!’ “Take that ‘umbrella down” (to an obnoxious iodividual in the front), ‘Tell that man in the linen coat to sit down,’” nda variety of oiner expressions more forcible than (periphrastic. Tho ladies talked incessantly, and as tho @waying group of horses rushed by the stand they actually chorused in delighted treble. Tho intervals Detween the races wera spent in discussing the beauty of the horses, the color and shape of the winner, the eoncours? of men in the enclosure, and even the seats of ‘the riders. They who have to their sorrow experienced ‘the sevority of a lady’s satire may form an idea of the slight but cutting sarcasin which was directed towards the gentlemen below. Ono individual appeared in all ‘the glory of « resplendent red necktie and red and ‘white collar, biack velvet coat and brass buttons and an ‘Immense bouquet, the size of an ordinary cauliflower, in bis buttonhvie. 1: can safoly be imagined that the gemarks of the deur creatures on the stand on the obnoxious but unconscious individual below were painful to listen to, ‘THA RETUBN TO TOWN. Were the drive trom the course to town a little longer M® would doubtiess become tue scene of as much mirth, fn course of time, as the’ {aui0u8 roture from the Englisi Derby. Immediately the rices are over everybody “pate,” vulgarity apeaking, fur the carriages, and the peed to Saratoga ie covored im an incredibly short space Of time with vebtoles of every conceivable kind. Four- fe-band barouches, fys, buggies and omuibuses got fembled up together ia apparvatiy tnextricabic con- fusten, and occasionally some of their male occupants finduige toward each other in that peculiar admixture of adiaage and impadencce known by the vulgar mono- @yllable of “chai.” Alihough the roads were somewhat heavy yesterday the drive was enjoyable, and, the ‘weather continuing fine, direotly dinner was over, the Aadies and ther escorts in large numbers sect out for the Deautiful lake, Here the chief employment is boating fend the esting of Moon's beautiful sliced potatoes in @orancopias and the drinking of Moon's msthetie cob- Dlers. The Races. The three reces of yesterday created much interest, ‘and the betting was heavy . In the first raco—a mile ‘and a half for three year olds—it was principally con- eentrated between M. Alexander's colt Bayswater and Captain Moore's gray colt, by Lightaiag, The former ran @hird tp the Travers’ siake, but could have been first if his owner had desired to win with him rather than with Merrill. Moore's colt, however, was as great @ favorite (as Bayswater nearly up to the time of the start, when Alexander's was largely advanced. Captain Moore was much dissatisfied with the riding of his colt in this race, evonte was fully illustrated. The filly by Eclipse, a very five animal, was the favorite, very large sums being paid for her in pools; but a bad start, and the failure of the to her going weil in the first half-mile, lost berth race, whic was won Dy ® Balrownie filly that Taos waa a very hollow thing for Arcola, the companion of Kentucky. A most and exciting run was made up the homestretch, filly passing both Hunter's and Watson’s, and it was cheering to see the brightening countenances of her backers. When about one hundred yards from the stand she looked very much like a winner, ag she to be running right up to Bush’s filly, but at the two mile distance stand she threw up the sponge and Bush’ under the a winner by two second, two lengths in front of Hunter's, Watson’s Van- dal fourth, and his Balrownie filly fifth. As they passed the stand Arcola was leading Thunder by two lengths, the Voucher horse third, twe lengths ahead of the Arlington gelding, who was eigtt or ten lengths ahead of Luther, who was the last to get away at the start. Going around the turn Arcola opened the gap to four longths, the Arlington gelding hav- ing cut louse and disposed of the Voucher, and soon after- wards ran past Thunder and made after Arcola at a merry pace, taster than we ever saw either of them run before. Arcola ied two lengths at the half mile Pale, the Arling- ton gelding second, a neck abead of Thunder, who was half a dozen lengths in front of the Voucher horse, Luther still dragging along considerably bebind.
