2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Wrovesnay, July 25—6 P. M. The stock market has shown further sicns of returning gutmation to-day, aud tolograms to buy from a dispersed ‘Multitude of speculators at Saratoga, Newport, Long Branob and elsewhore are being flashed into tho street with the recklessness which only confidence in high prices can beget, Tho dulness and depression of Mon- day and yesterday morning on the Stock Exchango damp- ened tho spirits of many an ardent aspirant in the race for woalth at tho watering places, but as suddenly as it waa darkened the prospect has brightened again, and races acquire a freah charm in speculative @yce by reason of profits in Wall streot. Tim Bobbin, the dry xoods clerk, can now breathe more freely in the probability of being able to stay where he is and pay his hotel bills, Mr Micawber, Junior, can indulge more confidently in the expectation of being not only able to Gefray his current expenses but pay off some of his long- standing liabilities, Mr. Thimblerig, the “lame duck’’ end ox-momber of the Stock Exchange, may even hope to mount the ladder of gold in a day and “‘aettle up” with his Oreditors to-morrow, 4 “buil’? market is always a picas- ‘ent one for the sprats, sardines and emelts in Wall street. It furnishes thera with food for the imagination, through ‘which they candisport in a lake of. thousand islands, with every isiand & monument of gold dostinod to gild the way to an earthly paradise, which is generally, but erroneously, supposed ¢o lio in ‘‘a brown stone front’? on the Fifth avenne—a strect affected by the worshippers of Mra, Grundy, and a fow others of a contrary porsua- sion somewhere up town, It is painful to dispel illu- gious, bat Wall strect men are gouerally such victims to them that they require to be reminded that “all Mosh 13 grass,’ and that consequently even hardened, hhawk-oyed, whiskey-stooped veterans of the street may be “groen”’ to their own true interest. To make monoy ona “ball” market, howevor, ig mo more than to make hay whilo the sun shines, and # man who could not earn 4 decent living elsewhere would think it strange and his luck bard if heould not double his Investment in a month in Wall street. Hence it is the dernier resort of a Jioat of vagabond, shiftiess adventurers, broken down tmoerchants and defauiters of all classes who wish to make up for previous shortcomings vy a sudden turn of good Xortune on the Stock Exchange. But as there ia # fair sprinkling of honest, industrious men among the multitude, it would be unjust to stigmatize tho whole under this unflattoring description, When the market turns, there is, unfortunately for the rreat majority of those gentlomen, a great donl of fluttering, which ts gonerally followed by a remarkable emptiness of pocket among their number for some time afterwards, ‘Tho Sows arc commonly the most successful speculators, and when hard pressed they know how to fail judiciously, + and to turn even a failure into success, although there ‘was ond poor fellow, with a suspicious crook iu bis nose, who once exclaimed on the sidewalk, preparatory to fainting, “2 pays everybody and nobody pays me;” but such instances are rare, apd there is reason to believe 1uat this unhappy individual was now to the street. fo bo more matter of fact, we soriously think that stocks aro beg nning to describe the course of a balloon, which will avo to rise very much higher before it is likely to commence falling. All the conditions of tho market, mouetary and otherwise, are favorable to the ascension, although, as the following hist of prices for leading shares on tho datos named shows, quo‘ations are considerably higher already, with one or two exceptions, than they woro a fow months agoz— January5, March5.
