FINANCIAL AND COMMER PIAL. Fupax, May 18—6 P. M. ‘Tho stock market has been, on the whole, firm and aui- mated to-day, Hudson River taking the lead in the specu- lation for a rise among the New York railway shares, and Cleveland and Pittsburg among the Western ones. There is a still growing disposition to invest in railway property, owing to the large receipts of the leading compantes, while the “bull” speculation, in anticipation of ay ap- prociation of values, is aided by the extreme monetary easo which, from the nature of governing causes, must necessarily be prolonged. At the open board at ten o'clock the market was firm, with especial buoyancy in Cleveland and Pittsburg. Now York Central sold at 943¢ a %, Brie 743, Hudson River 110%, Reading 107%, Michigan Southern (b. 3) 80, Cleveland and Pitsburg $634, Cleveland and Toledo 104%, Rook Island 9874, Northwestern 28%(—preferred 58%, Fort Wayne 9934, Milwaukee and St, Paul pro- ferred 70, Obio and Diississippi certificates .255;, Canton 6175, Cumberland 4744, Quicksilver 5374, Mariposa pre- ferred 2144, Western Union Telegraph 607%. At the first regular board thero was continued firmness, and New York Central closed 3 higher than at the half past two board yesterday. Erie §, Hudson River %, ‘Reading 3, Cleveland and Pittsburg 1%, Northwestern 3¢—preferrea %, Canton j, Quick silver 2%, Western Union Telegraph 1%. Michi- gan Nouthern was 3 lower, Ohio and Mississippi certifl- cates 3g, Cumberland 3. Government securities were steady, excepting seven-thirty notes of the second series, which declined 3. Atthe one o'clock sessions the market was steady. At tho nalf-past two board it was without material change. Hudson River closed % higher than at the first regular board; Northwestern $;—preforred 34, Milwaukee and St, Paul preferred 1, Cleveland and Toledo 34, Quick- silver \, Mariposa preferred };. Reading closed 34 lower; Michigan Southern X, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3%, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 44, Cumberland 55, Canton 4. Government securities were dull. Coupon sixes of 1881, and sevon-thirty notes of the second series, adyanced 3g. Five-twenties of the third issue declined At the open board at half-past three the market was firm. New York Central sold at 94%, Erie 7414, Bud- son River 1114, Michigan Southern 7934, Cleveland and Pittsburg (b. 8) 857%, Cleveland and Toledo 105% a %; Rock Island 93%, Northwestern 203,— preferred 594, Reading 1074, Fort Wayne 98%, Obio and Missls- sippi certificates 2814, Canton 61%, Cumberland 47%, Quicksilver 5424, Mariposa preferred 224, Wostern Union Telegraph 613g. Aftwrwards the market was dull, and, except for thw New York roads, prices were barely steady. At half-past five New York Central was quoted at 44; a 34, Erie 7434 a 4, Hudson River 111% a 112, Reading 1073¢ a 5, Michigan Southern 7934 a %, Cleve- jand and Pittaburg 8534, Cleveland and Toledo 105% a 106, Rock Istand 98% a %, Northwestern 294 a 3¢— proferred 5944 a 3¢; Fort Wayne 98%; Obio and Missis- sippi certificates 283, a 3g, Quicksilver 53 a 3. The money market continues to show less sluggish- neas, although there is no change to note in the rate either for loans or discounts, the supply of capital being largely in excess of the demand, The wants of the Stock Exchange are promptly met at 4.5 per cent, the tansactions at the lower rate being mainly on govern- ments. Five per cent is generally asked for advances on railway and miscellaneous stocks, but loans at this rate have been paid off to-day and lenders have been un- able m some instances to put them out anew. First class commercial paper is m request at 5 a 6 per cent, and good but not prime at 6 a7. The gold market opened at 1297%, and Bavanced to 130jg—the closing quotation. At this Dgure the Trea- sury broker stood ready to sell. Jost now, although a furthor shipment of more than three millions ts looked forward to on Saturday, the knowledge that the govorn- mont has a reserve of nearly fifty millions of gold checks operations fora rise; but should the exports of apecio continue long at the present rate the Treasury will tose control of the warket. Loans were almost invariably made without interest. The steamor Man- hattan, from Vora Cruz, brought $220,452 in specie. Foreign exchange was firm and active in preparation for to morrow’s steamers, There are vory few cotton or produce bills offering, and the demand is in excess of the supply. Good commercial bilig command 109 3;. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days sold at 109%, three days 1103; bills on Parle at stxty days 5.11% a 6.1234; short sight 6.09. The dimmished cotton exports and the pros- poct of their further diminution in anticipation of the next crop being a short ome give an undertone of strength to the market, and this tendency is amsisted by large present and prospective tmport- include foreign wheat, our own winter crop having been very seanty and of in fertor quality, owing to premature ripening.
