D'SSATISFACTION OF THE LIQUOR DEALERS—TNE GROCERS—THE SUNDAY CLAUSE—THE GERMANS OPPOSED TO IT—PREPARATIONS FOR A GRAND DEMONSTRATION IN OPPOSITION TO THE SUNDAY LAW—WHAT THE PUBLIC SAYS, ETC. The Metropolitan Exciso law continues to be a subject of general consideration and speculation, and much anriety and uneasiness is manifested among a certain class of dealers, who will be excluded by the Board from the benefits of a license, and great efforts have been made to induce the Commissioners of the Board of Excise to recede from their decision to exclude grocers, but in vain. They now look to the Liquor Dealers’ Bociety for protection, and it appears that ‘by this body they have been advised to continue their business as usual—that is, to sell their Mquor without a license, if they cannot obtain one— It is conceded that the institution of corner groceries must cease to exist if the sale of liquor by. the grocers is prohibited. The decision of the Board of Exciso in reference to the license fee, which has been fixed at $100 and $250, is generally considered It 1s considere? very unjust that a beer re- tailer in Avenue A, keeping a small, but respectable, place, shall have ‘to pay hundred dollars for @ license, while the proprietor of a large hotel bas to pay not more than $250. This measure is de- Te. abuse of power which can do no good. if the ture had a law ina milder form no ‘one, it is said, would have objected to the enforcement of the Excise law, ‘but the law as it is framed, it is gener. ally considered, cannot be carried out In all its provisions. ‘The majority of the retail dealers are, however, willi to conform with the law, as far ‘as possible, ant are anxious to obtain their licenses, and if the Beard should refuse to grant them’ it is likely that combinations will be formed by those that will wo by be cut off to insist on what they might deem aright ‘The law, and especially the rules adopted the Commissioners of the Board of Excise, are deemed too severe on the poor or small dealer and de- eidedly in favor of the rich aud large dealer.
