NATIONAL ACADRMY OF DESIGN. ‘The forty frst annual exhibition of the National Acad- omy of Design is now open at the building corner of Fourth avenue and Twenty-third street. The walls of ‘the fine gailenes and the corridor, which comprise the ‘exbibition portion of the building, are crowded with works of art, numbering in ail five hundred and fprty- two. If the merit of the pictures reprosonted was at all equivalent to the number it would indeed be an exbibi- on of which New York might be proud. But, unforta- Bately, this is not so; for, though there are many works poassesing great taiant and a fow evidencing genius, the great majority of them have little, if anything, to Fecommend them, while, we are constrained to say, many should never have been admitted to the Academy all, One ie pained after striking wpon a good picture and deriving bot b pleasure and profit from it to have to Wavel through « whole room fall of insipidity before his eye alights upon another.
