a 4 NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, APRIL 19, 1866.—TRIPLE SHEET. “FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Wepsespay, April 18—6.P, M. ‘The stock market has been firm, but rather sluggish Ro-day, The speculative feeling is, however, almost ‘entirely in favor of a rise, and confidence the value ‘of railway property 1s increasing. The, miscellaneous bares tend upward, but their movement is somewhat +frregular. There is an undertone of strength to the government stocks; but these are not actively dealt in, partly in consequence of their ‘character, which renders them a mystery to the majority of the Public outs'de of Wall street. What, our national debt stands most in need of is consolidation and unity. All tho securities of the government ought to be funded, as the option accrues to the Treasury, into # perpetual | annuity, bearing not more than five per cent interest, ‘and Congress should legislate with s view to this result, | which, when accomplished, will give us a steck like the Britigh éonaols in kind. This would constitute @ sort of Darometer of the times, and, while taking rank with the Yeading public securities of the world, it would be ia ctive demand both for investment and on speculative Weodunt As it Js, our debt is a huge specimen of fmoongruous patchwork, showing the inconsistencies “and indefiniteness of purpose of the financiers and legis- ators who put it into a shape 80 execrable and un wcientific. At the early session of the open ‘board Erie sold at 1% 074%, Roading 103% (s. 8), Michigan Northern (b. 3) 19%, Cloveland and Pittaburg 81%, Northwestern 26%, preferred 5644, ‘ort Wayne 9134, Quicksilver 5155 8 62, Spruce Hill Coal 63. Cleveland and Pitsburg and Rock Island wore steady. The latter company is understood to have settled with fhe second morigage bondholders of the Mississippi and Missouri Railway on the basis of 45 per cent in cash, Wth a view to the final purchase of that line, and tho first instalment on account of the same was pant to a Committee representing the bondholders to-day. Govern- Ment securities were firm, Coupon ten furties advanced %, seven-thirty notes of the first and second series #4. At the half-past three open board New York Central, Gold at 9354, Hrio 7434, Reading 103%, Michigan Southern (®. 3) 797%, Cleveland and Pittsburg, 8114, Cleveland and Toledo 102, Northwestern 275, preferred 5734, Fort Wayne 9254, Spruce Hill Coal 6, Quicksilver 5244, Mari- posa preferred 23%. Afterwards Hudson River was active and rose to 1087% a 109, under th» publication of the March earnings of the road, which show an increase Of $76,169 over those of the corresponding month last year, or $500,804 against $424,617. Cloveland and Pitts - burg was sligh'ly depressed by the report of its. March earnings, which show a decrease in the regular traffic, ax compared with the same month in 1865, of $43,144. At half-past five the market closed dull but steady at the following quota. tions:—Erie 1434 a 4, Hudson River 108%, Reading 193% aX, Michigan Southern, 79% a 80, Cleveland and Pittsburg 60% 081, Northwestern 274 a 3 preferred OY a 3, Now York Contral 934; a i, Rock Island 118% &119, Fort Wayne 91% 292, Canton 52a %, Ohio and Mississippi cortificates 26 & 3, Mariposa preferred 95% 8 3. As the day advanced the market strength»ned, and the rate for loans 1036 §o, 9-82, with great difficulty ta borrowing even at thia figure. The consequence was that » number of persons’ defaulted in making their de- liveries, The price advanced steadily to 1277;, and closed at 127% 4 34. The rate paid for loans does not fully indicate the disproportion between the supply and Qe donmnd, us the difference between cash and reguiar {n the room was at ono time % a 3¢ por cent. Importers have been deterring remittances to their foreign creditors as much as possible for a consider- able ume past, owing to the dullness of trade’ and the consequent difficulty of relieving themselves profitably of the heavy stocks of goods which have been accumu- tating on their hands. Meanwhile the import movement bas been large, and the indebtedness of our merchants to Europe has been steadily increasing until now it con- stitutes an important aggregate, the liquidation of which will involve ademand for billy probably equal to the supply at or above current rates for some weeks to come.
