The following facts relating to the disaster are gathered from those on board Of the different vessels:— THE STEAMER UNDER WAY. ‘The steamer City of Norwich was one of the large ‘freight boate belonging to the Norwich and New York ‘Transportation Company, and as a general thing carried Dut fow passengers. She left Norwich, Connecticut, ander the command of Captain D. B. Sturgess, at one s’clock on Tuesday atternoop, with asmall amount of freight and half a dozen passengers, bound for New Lon- den, where she was to receive the balance of her argo. A pleasant sail of thirty-one miles down the river Frames brought the vessel to her destination, where a Jacge and valuable freight was awaiting shipment on Beard of her. The busy scenes always attendant upon the transference of merchandise to the hold and deck of one of our large Sound steamers was accomplished with he usual and proverbial Yankee dash and energy, and half-past nine o'clock the City of Norwich was loaded bd toher guards, At ten o’elock, after taking a fow ‘nore passongers on board, which made eleven in all, the fines were cast off, and, under a pressure of twenty-two fpounds of steam, the vessel started on her regular voy- ge, and beaded for New York. All on board were in the ‘Beat of spirits, little dreaming of the dreadful calamity hat was eo soon to overtake th THE COLLISION. She sank in than an hour after being run into, and was valued, with her cargo, at over a million of dollars, T! essel was fully insured. STATEMENT OF ONE OF THE PASSENGERS, Mr. Henry Turner, a merchant, of Norwich, who was a passenger on board of the City’ of Norwich at the time of the disaster, states that when the collision occurred Re was at cep {o his stateroom, and was awakened by 8 sudden crash, whereupon he immediately rose. When he ran out he discovered that the steamer had been run into, and he thought he would return to his stateroom to save bis watch and money, he having about a thousand doliarg placed in the stateroom ; but on turning back he found’ the steamer was on ‘fire, and as the flames were spreading so rapidly it was impossible for him to save his property. He had nothing but his over- coat and pants, and in order to avoid being burned to death he had to jump overboard. He then began to swim as fast as possible to reach a small boat, which by the time had in the water; but, as too many persons were clinging to it, the boat was turned over, and all were thrown into’ the water, Mr. Turner, however, rose again, and made another exertion to reach the boat, but inthe attempt was nearly drowned. Mr. Turner, ‘like the other pas- sengers, was very shattered in his’ mind in consequence of this frightful accident. He states that there were only fifteen passengers on board of the ill-fated boat, two of whom appear to be missing. These are, ag stated by Mr. Turner, a little son of samuel Osgood, of this city, and a son of the chief engineer of the STATEMENT OF THE CHIEF ENGINEER OF THE Charles Smith, the chief engineer of the Electra, states that about four o’clock in the morning he was alarmed, ‘and on going out saw a steamer im flames. THE STEAMER TAKES FIRE. Amid the hurried bustle and excitement consequent ‘pon the stoamer’s settling so rapidly into the water the cry of fire was raised, and in a few seconds more the forked tongues of livid flame were seen darting out of the vossel’s hold, and this added greatly to the confusion ‘that already exixted among the passengers and crew. ‘The steamer being supplied with upper and lower far- maces, the water soon reached the lower fires and forced ‘the flames into the fireroom, where they communicated with the woodwork, ignited the combustible materials with which the room was filled, and but a very few minutes clapsed before the vessel was enveloped in ames. . spot where a few weeks ago the City of New London was Tun into by the steamer Monitor, and where the steamer Lexington was burned in 1840.
