2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sonpay, April, 1866, Business in Wall stroct during the past week was it. terrupted by the occurrenee of Good Friday, which was pbserved as a holiday. The stock market opened dull, Decame foverish and closed heavy, under strong offorts to break down Erie with a view to depress the entire Fallway list, The price declined’ to 7% on’ Saturday, against 81% on the 234 ult Michigan Southern’ re- mained very firm throughout, selling as high as 84%; Dut the other speculative stocks sympathized slightly with Erie, Rock Island, after ‘rising to 126, fel! “back to 111 @ 3% late on Thursday evening, On Saturday tho market Incked animation, and the bears hammered Erie in particular with considerable effect. The indica- tions are, however, that, in view of the present condition of monetary affaits Wind the reassuring arpeot of Anancial Jogulation in Congress, the upward movement bas not yet culminated, but has merely been temporarily ar- rested by the attack on Erie by parties “short” of other stocks. ‘The following quotations were current om the street at half.past five on Saturday afternoon:—Michigan Southern 835; a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 76% @ %, Rock Istand 110%, Erie 74, Fort Wayne 88 a 3, North- woatorn 25% a 26, proferred 5334 « X, New York Central 903 a 5, Hudson River 107% a 3, Reading 083¢ = %. The gold market experienced further recovery from tho depression of the previous Week, and-réinalned firm ‘advantages in the form of exemption from local taxpe. Thus:—“The associations also possess all Bowers necessary for carrying on the business of bank- ing by discounting and nogotiating promissory notes, Grafts, bills of exchange and other evidences of debt, ‘and by receiving deposits, buying and selling exchange, coin and bullion; by loaning money on personal se- curity; by obtaining, issuing and circulating notes, ac- cording to the provisions of the act, The duration of the charter is twenty years, They are also made depositaries of public moneys, when designated by the Secretary of under the act’ ig their at tho advance, tho closing price being 127%. The ex- pee! er a ee ee treme range of the price on each day of the week wasas} ai Wh" t reducing by. owing to the large outstanding ‘short’ interest, and loans were generally made at 333d a % per diem in favor of the lender. The export to Europe for the week ‘was only $3,500, The demand for eustoms duties aggre- gatod $2,432,596. Foreign exchange was depressed by an abundant sup- ply of bills anda limited demand. The market closed heavy, the following ‘belvig the nomial quotations:— Bankers’ bills on England, at sixty days, 1063, 0 106%; three days, 1073 a 107%; commercial, 105% 9 10634; Dills on Paris at long date, 5f. 80c.; short sight, 5f. 25c. ; on Hamburg, 3534 a 35%; on Amsterdam, 40 a 40%; on Bremon, 77a 77%; on Berlin, 703 @ 70%; on Frank- fort, 403; a 4035. The large receipts of cotton at the ports—those for the week being reported at about 45,000 bales—have had a tendency to weaken rates in combination with the firm- ness of the Liverpool market, which is stimulating ex- Porta. More sanguine expectations are at the same time gaining ground as to the extent of the next crop. The feceipts in this city for the week ending on Friday evening are returned at 12,892 balos, and the exports from the port for the week ending the 27th ult. at 16,609 bales. ‘Fhore is a firmer and more hopeful feeling folt in the dry goods trade, aliko with the gfneral merchandise markets, although no material recovery in prices has taken place. This is mainly attributable to the turn of the gold market. The money market has been extremely easy at five hath shall be given, and to him that hath mot even that which he bath shall be taken away from him.” Mr. Chase would if he had his own way give thom all that they ask; for he read a minority report in favor of the exemption of the bank shares from. local taxation, which reflected his own prejudices more than sound judgment, and therefore djti him little credit. ‘The value of the imports at Boston for the week end- ing March 31 was $1,600,000, and the daty upon them will probably be pearly $800,000. The Third National Bank of Buffalo has beon desig- nated as a government depository during the week Just closed. Tho total number is now four hundred. The only national bank authorized during the week ending March 31, 1866, is the Minors’ National Bank of Salt Lake, Great Salt Lake, Total number of na- tional banks now in existence 1,644. Amount of na- tional curroncy issued during weck ending March 31, 1866, $1,430,800, Amount of national currency pre- viously issued $262,616,870. Total to date $264,247,170. That the solvency of some thirteen country banks ahould have been dependent upon that of a single private banking frm in New York argues a very unsound condition of the affairs of a con- siderablo number of other local banks. If the business of these suspended institutions had been properly con- ducted, Culver, Penn & Co.'s faiture could hardly have seriously affected them; and the fact that it did so goes ‘to show that they were more de»ply involved in the for- tunes of that house than in justice to their depositors they should have been. : Great dissatisfaction le among the stockholders of national banks the decision of the Supreme Court declaring the shares of such tnstitutions liable to Southern flour was in moderate demand at previous prices; the sales were 750 bbia, Canada flour was steady, with a fair inquiry; the sales were about 400 bbis, Rye flour was inactive.
