The stock market has been animated but somewhat trregular to day, and although ite general tendency con- tinues upward, the “bear” interest powerfully asserts itself at every step in the progress of the upward move- ment. Erie and Michigan Southern are becoming ex- tremely scarce for delivery, and Cleveland and Pittsburg Promises soon to be equally s0, under the manipulation of the respective cliques in them, and all these stocks are largely oversold. Erie was loaned this afternoon at the rate of 34 per cent per day, and ares were bought in under the rule in several in- stances, while the deliveries of old Southern were very frregular, The temper of the street favors a brisk rise in the ensuing spring, which, aided by increased railway earnings and ap easy condition of monetary affuirs, is likely to take place, \ At the carly session of the open board the market was firm, with special activity im Michigan Southern, the sales ageregating 5,200 shares. The latter sold at 70% a 713, Erie €5%%, New York Central 9134, Reading 9755 & 3, Cleveland and Pitsburg 753, Northwestern 253¢, preferred 52%, Fort Wayne 894 a }, Schuyl- kill Coal 14%. The money market showed imcreased ease and call loans were freely made on ratlway collaterals at seven per cent, and on governments at six. The discount line is without any new feature. First class commercial paper passes at 74¢ per cent, The gold market continues unsettled. The opening price was 132%, followed by an advance to 133%, a sub- sequent relapse to 182% and a recovery to 13314 at 2:20 P.M. Afterwards there was a recession to 133, and an advance of 34, the closing quotation being 1333g. Loans wore generally made flat and at two per cont, in favor of the lender, the supply of coin for delivery being a shade easier than yesterday. Foreign exchange was less firm than yesterday.
