Cox, the attorney of the court, transmitting his a on the petition of the executor of J. B. Haw, asking that certain monies paid by him for taxes when they should have been paid by the heirs be refunded. The attorney says: “The payment in question having been made under & mere mistake of law, cannot be re- covered from the Levy Gourt. There is no ob- n on the court to refund it, but they haye the right to do so if they think proper.” Dr. Nichols, from the commit'ee on prim: schools, made a report on the communication of the commissioners of schovis made at the last meeting. The report states that in view of the fact creditable to the commissioners and encouraging to the cause of popular education, that sites for houses for white schools haye been secured in ali the districts and th: pros- pect is presented for the purchase of a site for 4 colored school in the 2d school district, (east ef Tenallytown and tvest of Rock Creek,) while flourishing colored schools held in rent- ed rooms are already in operation im the 6th and 7th school éistricts, the committee are of the opinion that it wonid be un wise—not to say unnecessary—to ask Congress to lessen the restrictions which the act now in force im- — upon the procurement of sites for school- joures. The committee express the 0} inion, in view of the zeal and discretion airesly dis- played in obtaining sites for white echools, that eligible sites for colored schools will be se- cured as fast as the proportion of the school funds which the ES requires them to set apart for the education of colored children will enable the board to build houses and maimtain schools in them. The committee recommend that a tax of twenty-five cents on each one hundred dollars be levied for school purposes, and make a com- Parison of the amounts — im different parts of the county, showing that the amount named is less than one-half of that paid in other places. The report was adopted. Mr. Plant offered a resolution requesting the appointment of a committee ‘to examine the condition of the turnpike leading from Boun- dary street to the Tstrnet line, at Bladens- burg, to ascertain whether or not the said road is in the condition required by its charter. The bea) a was . jomas Woodward, Neoroniers presented Nis unt for fees for holding inquests in the county since 1556, (at which time the late suit in which he obtained judgment was entered.) amounting to $12,972, which was referred to the committee on finance. This does not in- clude the witnesses’ fees, and it was estimated thateyery inquest in the District, when the estate is not able to pay the expenses of the Jury, costs from $40 to $50. — eee A Sincritar Case.—On Monday, Mr. Geo.
