2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, March 5—6 P. M. ‘There has been a rather irregular and excited market for stocks and gold to-day, the activity and fluctuations in which have been greater than usual of late. The gonoral tendency of railway shares was upward, but the Dears vigorously resisted {t and succeeded in hammering two or threo of them with temporary effect, The alternate falb and rise of gold was in some degree connected with the operations of parties “short”? of stocks, who endeavored to reach the Stock Exchange through the Gold Room, and thereby secure @ double profit, The increased animation thus imparted to speculation may not unreasonably be re- garded as the precursor of a more active state of busi- ness in Wall street at the present season of the year and in the prevailing temper of the public mind. Even the spasmodic movements of to-day are encouraging in com- parson with the stagnation which has marked the greater portion of the last two months. At the early session of the open board the market was firm. Michigan Southern was active (sales 4,500 shares), and sold at 70; New York Central 91 (a, 3), Erle 84%, Rock Island 10534, Cleveland and Pittsburg 76%, North- wostern 2644, preferred 534{, Fort Wayne 903 a 90, Quicksilver 42, Schuylkill Coal 14%. At the first regular board Michigan Southern and New York Central were strong, but the rest of the list was dull and rather heavy, ‘Now York Central closed 134 bigher than at the hatf- past two board on Saturday, Michigan Southern (sales 6,700) 4%. Erie and Reading wero unaltered Cleveland and Pittsburg was 34 lower, Northwestern 3s, preferred %, Fort Wayne 1, Western Union Telegraph %, Quicksilver 3% Government securities wore steady at the closing prices of last week. \ After the call the market was lower, but at the ono o'clock sessions there was more firmness and prices ad- vanced. The sales of Erie at the open board were largo, aggregating 6,900 shares, At the half-past two board it was firm, Erie closed 1¢ higher than atthe first regular board, Michigan Southern 34. New York Central was 3 lower, Reading %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 34, North- western preferred 3, Fort Wayne 3. Government se- curities were steady, excepting coupon ten-fortios, which advanced 3. At tho half-past three open board the market was somewhat unsettled, but active, with large transactions in Cleveland and Pittsburg (sales 7,900 shares) and Michi- gan Southern (sgles 5,600). The latter sold at 7034 a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 75% a 5%, Now York Central 91% a 3%, Erie 845, Reading 98 a 975, Rock Island 104% 4 105, Northwestern 2534, preferred 62, Fort Wayne 8844 a %. Afterwards the market was excited and irregular, Erie and Michigan Southera being steady and Fort Wayne and Pittsburg weak. At haif-past five o'clock Erie was quoted at 853 Michigan Southern 70% a 71, New York Contral 90% a %, Hudson River 10234 bid, Reading 97 a %, Cloveland and Pittsburg 755; a %, North- western 2544 a 34, preferred 52% a 34, Rock Islatid 105; a %, Fort Wayne 88}, a 3. Compound interest notes were quoted by the dealers thus:—June, 1864, 107%; Tuly, 1864, 10734; August, 1864, 106%; October, 1864, 105% ; December, 1964, 104%; May, 1865, 102%; August, 1865, 1014 ; September, 1865, 10134; October, 1865, 101. There has been a moderately full demand for money from the Stock Exchange, which has been promptly met at seven percent, with a few exceptions at six. The ‘applications for discounts are slightly on the increase; but first class commercial paper passes freely at 734 a8 per cont. The bank statement for the week shows a contracti n of loans, chiefly owing to withdrawals of tem- porary deposits irom the Sub-Treacury and the salo of government securities, to the extent of $4,436,788. The doposits have decreased $1,797,026, and the legal tender notes $2,842,581, consequent in part upon payments made for gold sold on gove nment ‘account at the end of the week before last, The specie has increased $2,967,779 from the same cause, The siatoment is not unfavorablo, and the supply of loanable funds with the banks is in excess of the current demand. The disbursements of the Sub-Treasury are active, the balance this evening being reduced to $89,442,430. ‘The course of gold has been unusually eccentric, the price ranging from 1325 at the opening to 134% soon after noon, and ba'k to 132% at forty minutes past three o'clock P, M. The cause of the weak- moss in the first instance was large ‘short’? sales by the German bankers, who sold out their “long” gold at the close of last week, and who now wish to buy it back as low as possible. One American house also sold on Saturday morning $300,000 of coin previously hoarded, and this assisted the down- ward tendency; but notwithstanding tho large sales which have been made coin was much scarcer for deliv- ery to-day than at any time last week, and instead of in- terest being paid for having it carried interest at the rate of about two per cent had to be paid for the loan of it. The government has not beenfa seller under 137—tho lowest sale made by Mt having been at 1374{—and will not be, its disposition being favorable to checking the speculative decline and promoting a recovery, which will doubtless soon take place. The premium has not been #0 low since last May, when, in the panic which attended the capture of Richmond, it declined to 284%. Previous to that time it had not touched a point equally low since September 1863, when it declined to 27. The range of the market price during the years 1862, 1863 und 1966 is thus —— 1862, —. ——-1863.—— ———1 ite “is4 Lowest, = Lowest.
