2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. ‘Tavnsnay, March 1—6 P. M. The stock market continues active, a pricas tend | 5001 upward, The throwing over till next pa “soo Dill in tho House of Representatives exerted no material influence In Wall stroet; and it is gonerally supposed that there is no possibility of its pas- gage—so that it is no longer a formidable bugbear, In view of the state of affairs generally, hopefulness is giving place to apprehensions in the public mind, and confidence in values is being restored accordingly. ‘At tho early session of the open board there was alarge business done m New York Central at 915¢ a 3¢ (sales 2,500 shares), Erie at 8536 a % (salea 9,400), Michigan Soutlern at 7034 @ 34 (sales 3,100), Cleveland and Pitts- burg at 77% (sales 5,100), and Reading at 99% a 34 (sales 6,300). The rest of the list was dull. At the first regular board the market was generally steady, the chief activity being confined to New York Central (sales 4,900), Erie (sales 6,270), and Reading (sales 8,600). Erie closed on the call % higher than at the half-past two board yesterday, Cleveland and Toledo %, Cumberland 34. New York Central and Northwestern were un- changed. Hudson River was % lower, Reading 3, Michigan Southern 3%, Wlinois Central 4, Cleveland and Pittsburg %, Rock Island 34, Fort Wayne X, Quicksilver 1, Western Union Telegraph 2 Govern- ment securitics wero frmor. Coupon five-twenties of the old issuo advanced 3; under the improvement reported in the London market. Seven-thirty notes of the first series wore 3 higher. Coupon ten-fortics were 3% lower, ex-dividend, At the one o’clock seasions the market was dull bat frm. At the half.past two board the speculative fecling was steady. New York Central closed 3¢ higher than at the first re,ular board, Erie 3, Hudson River 3g, Michigan South- ern %, Alton and Terre Haute 4;, Atlantic Mail 34, Read. ing, Northwestern and Fort Wayne were steady. Cleveland and Pittsburg was 3¢ lower, Cleveland and Toledo %, Cumberland 34, Quicksilver 3. Government securities were quiet. Coupon ten-forties advanced 4, seven thirty notes of the first series 3f. Coupon five-twenties of the old issue declined 44, second issue 34, seven-thirty notes of the third series 34. At the hulf-past three open board the market for Erie was strong, and for the rest of the railway shares steady. New York Central sold at 9234, Erie 8634, Hudson River 10834, Reading 99%, Michigan Southern 70%4, Illinois Central 11534, Schuylkill Coal 1534. Afterwards the market closed strong. At six o’clock New York Central was quoted at 9244 a %{, Erie 8675 a 87, Reading 99% a %, Michigan Southern 7034 a 34, Cleveland and Pittsburg 17% #78, Rock Island 1058 a 3. The Milwaukee and Minnesota Railway Company— whose line forms the eastern division of the La Crosse road—havo failed to provide for the payment of the in- terest falling due to-day on the Milwaukee city bonds and the second mortgage La Crosse and Milwaukee rail- way bonds, on which the parties constituting the present organization recently paid $465,000 for past duo interest, When they assumed the management it was gencrally supposed that their interest payments would be promptly made, and their failure to make the first pay- ment to-day, the first due since they entered into pos- session, has excited some surprise, Should the interest not be shortly forthcoming, it 1s probable that tho road will be again advertised for sale by order of the Supreme Court, The money market was moderately easy at 6a 7 per cent this morning for call loans, but as the day advanced ‘the demand increased, and the exceptions at the lower rate became fower. The supply of currency at this centre is, however, increasing by a slow drain from the westward, and the balance in the Sub-Treasury etill stands high, the total this evening being $106,234,481. The discount Tne shows increasing activity, and first class commercial Paper is quoted at 73; a 8, with exceptions at seven. Lenders gre disinclined to accept any but prime apd good pames, preferring to place their money at call, ‘Tho latter grade is quoted at8.a9. The Chicago Tribune of February 21 says:— ‘There was a good demand for currency to dav, bat the banks were tolorably well sdpplied, and pri was readily discounted to good custower per anuum. The market, however, cannet be reported easy, as thero is an outeido demand for all that the Dankers aro willing to lend. Street rates aro firm at La 2 percent per month. Tho supply of Raatern exchange fs very light, and the market is very firm at par buying and 1-1 pata pheoae selling. Round lots are in good de- firm among bankers at a premium of 60c a 760 per pony omens dollars, ‘The gold market was weak, under the favorable ad- vices from Loudon—amely, the increase of the bullion in the Bank of England to tho extent of £239,000; the advance of five-twenties from 6734, on the 1éth alt, to 68 a 4 on the 18th; in consols moving the same time from 87 a i to 87% @ 4%; in Ilinols Central from ™% to 7% = , and in Erie from 51K to 62% & 63%. This rapid improvement in the funds and foreign stocks, together with tho improving condition of the Bank, promises to result in a reduction of the rate of discount before long, a3 they furnwh indications that monetary affairs have taken a Gocided turn for the better instead of for the worse, as early all the English journals solemnly predicted. The supply of coin for delivery continues superabundant, and the rato for carrying it is about five per cent The opening quotation was 196%, followed by a steady dechne to 138%, the closing price. The Sub-Treasury disbursed $193,250 in coin In payment of the interest on the ten-forty loan, tn addition to $791,160 in currency, om ac- count of the tomporary deposit line, Foreign exchange was inactive. Leading drawers con- tinued to ask 108% for their sixty day billsJon England, but the rate quoted by brokers was 1033, a Petroleum and mining stocks were active and firm, At the first board Benuehoif Run closed 20c, highor than ut the saine time yesterday, selling at $15 20; Pithole Crock 60c,, selling at $8 65; Smith and Parmlee $1 80, solling at $12 60.
