CONNECTICUT. MTHE REPUBLICAN STATE CONVENTION. Nomination of General Joe r Governor, Hawley Endorsement of the President and Congress. THE BADICALS SILENCED AND DEFEATED. &e, &e. ke. @ur Hartford Correspondence. Hanrtrorp, Conn., Feb, 13, 1866. Tn my last letter from this stirring little community I Furnished you with a brief sketch of the condition of the guvernatorial contest in this State, enumerat ting the dif- (ferent candidates, glancing lightly at their antecedents, ¢xplaining the adopted platforms of one party, indicating hat would be the probable policy of the other, and de- spcribing the feneral excitement as being unusually high ages all classes of the people. The effect of that short <position has been greater than I could have anticipated, 131 seems t# have aroused the rank and file of the demo- veratic and republican parties to a realizing. sense of their respective positions, and to have caused the latter 4in particular to practice more discretion and pru- dence. The original intention of the ‘so fur as I have been able to republicans, Jearn, was to have adopted an anti-admimistration — platform, or one containing such a luk swarm endorsement of Presi- -dent Johnson's conduct as to wean from thelr support a Jarge element of the conservative branch of their party, Xow, it 1s not easy to tell exactly what line of policy ‘the wit pareve. From the cautious tone adopted by their leaders it is ovideut that they have been (rightened ‘aud disconceried by the plin of their op Mat they faily comprehend the dangerou ponents, and § position in ¥ Which they will be placed in the event of adhering to the original programme of hostility to the President and hoisting wm extreme radical as their stan’ iurd bearer, Hence there is a softening down visible in the language © the long heads of the so-called Union party, and a disposition is manifested to avoid all ce! ‘tupies, to smooth over the great points ait ‘to agree upon some sort of mbartassing of dispute a general platform which will unite the great body of the repab Ticans and prevent the alarming division t suding a week ago. I tind that a great iat was im- number of nt leaders are drilling their foilowers up to the idea that the quarrel between the President and Con ress is, atter all, a mere bagatelle, something Uhat may daiely De induized in by mea of thé same polit “something, (n fact, that amounts to nothing, awhem you come to analyze tt”? The idea isa pretiy good ong if it does not to have the desired effect im b come to | hoodwinking the people. Afr months of out spoken opposition to ‘the administration, and months of rabid icaders in the ewspapers, favoring negro suffrage and every turm, it may be doubted whether th Ahought of dhe republicans will avail to save tremism in second sober ther, As W the candidates to be nominated, I see no reason de ange: Gee opimons I expressed a week ago.
