Obitnary. WEARE DRAKE PARSONS, Mr. W. D. Parsons, of thie city, died suddenly yester- day morning, at his residence, from the effects of a stroke of paralysis. He was fifty-nine yeare of age and @ native of the State of Maine. Early in life he went to ‘New Orleans, where be was for rome time engaged in mercantile pursuits, He also had business connections in Texas. Subsequently, and about twelve years since, he took up his residence in New Youk. and fiually started the Daily News, with Gideon J. Tucker as editor, and Jake Thompson and other men of ability as contributors. Later, he transferred the establishment to its present proprietors, since which time Mr. Parsons, up to the date: of his demise, had not engaged in any active occupation. He had many friends, was a Freemason, and always bore the reputation of being an honorable man. A member of the Mozart Hall branch of the democracy from the hour of its organization, he held the position of a mem- ber of its General Committee, but never was an incum- dent of any political office. He enjoyed exceltent and robust health until the attack of paralysis, which struck him down at his own threshold, and from the effects of which he died after lingering’ a few days. Bis last moments were nearly painless, and he died’ easy, sur- rounded by family and friends. JOHN 8. VOORBIES, THE LAW PUBLISHER. Mr. John 8. Voorbies, well known as a book publisher of this city, and for the past forty years located in Nassau street, near the HexaLp Buildings, died in Brooklyn on ‘Sunday Jast. Some time before Mr. Voorhies entered the firm of Mr. Halsted that. tieman built the ‘Law Buildings,” at the corner of Nassau and Liberty streote, which cost him thirty thousand ‘but which are now valned at over tour hundred thousand dollars, Mr. Voorhies became a partner with Mr. Halsted, and finally succeeded him in the business of book publishing. He displayed great energy and enterprise, and at once took high rank asa publisher of legal works. He compiled and published “Voorhies’ Code of Procedure,” “Abbott's Digest,”? Cleaveland’s Banking Laws.” \Greenleat's Overraled Cages,” all of Burrill’s principal works on “Circumstantial Evidence,” “Voluntary Arraignments,” &c. other standard law worke. He made works of the library of the late Wi left by that gentieman to Hamilton College hies was looked upon as a good friend to young lawyers, often furnishing them Books on liberal conditions.
