FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, Oct, 80-6 P. M ‘The stock market opened with considerable bucyanoy ‘this morning, and as the early session of the open board New York Centra: sold at 98, Erie 92%, Roading 115%, Michigan Southern 743, Cleveland and, Pittsburg 8234, Northwestern 30%, preferred 66%, Fort Wayne 103, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 28%. At the first regu- lar board quotations were in the ascendant, and the mar- ket very active, and there was @ strong demand for New York Central, Chicago and Northwestern ‘nd Fort Wayne New York Central closed 134 higher than at the first board on Saturday, Reading 1%, Dlinois Central 1%, Cloveland and Pittsburg 134, Northwestern 9%, preferred 23, Rock Island 1X, Fort Wayne 5%, Prairie du Chien 3, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 13s, Cumberland 13. Atlantic Mail sold at 153. 154, Erie was 34 lower. Gov- ernment securities improved. Coupon five-twenties showed am advance of 4, ten-forties . New five- twenties declined 34. After the call the volume of transactions continued large, but prices declined a fraction, Subsequently they recovered, and at the one o’clock open board the market was strong, At the second board it was very firm, New York Central being the strongest stock on the list. The latter closed 13 higher than at the first board, Reading 34, Northwestern 3¢, preferred 36, Rock Island 34, Fort Wayne $§, Prairie du Chien %. Erie was 3 lower, Cleveland and Pittsbarg %. Michi- gan Southern, Ohio and Mississipp! certificates and Quick- silver were unchanged. Government securities wore all but steady, Seven-thirty notes of tho third series sold at 9734. At the open board at half-past three the market was buoyant. New York Central sold at 100%, Erie 92%, Hudson River 1093, Reading 116, Michigan Southern ‘74%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 833, Northwestern 31%, preferred 67%, Rock Island 109%, Fort Wayne 105%, Prairio du Chien 694, McGregor Western 22, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 29, AtlanticfMail 163, Canton 42%, Brunswick 12, Quicksilver 48. Later, on the street, the market was nearly steady. At ten minutes past five P. M. New York Central was quoted at 99%(, Erie 92% a 4, Reading 115% a %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 827 a 83, Northwestern 31%, Proferrod 6734 a %, Michigan Southern 747% ® 3%, Fort Wayne 105}; a %. ‘The market was firm at the close, and the disposition of the street to speculate for a rise showed noabatement. New York Central, Northwestern and Ohio and Missis- sippi certificates were the strongest shares on the specu- lative list. ‘The demand for loans from the Stock Exchange was promptly met at seven per cent, and the capital offering to houses in good credit was in excess of the demand. There was a large return of legal tenders from Chicago and other points in the West to the banks here this morning, and this imparted increased ease to the money market. This return was owing to the banks at this centre with Western accounts having declined to accept the thirty and sixty days paper offered by their correspondents, and consequently there is no alternative for the latter but a return of the cur- rency which they withdrew during the last two or three weeks, unless produce 's sent forward in sufficient quan- tities to neutralize the existing disparities. The effect may soon be seen in a slight deduction of the prices of produce in the West; but this will not necessarily react materia!ly upon prices at the East, for the decline will stimulate exports in proportion to the decline, and so the equilibrium will be preserved. Tho bank statement for the week was on the whole more favorable than it was generally expected it would be. The decrease of $4,065,040 in loans shows the con- traction which the withdrawal of deposits by the country benks occasioned. This, however, is chiefly traceable to withdrawals on account of the temporary loan from the Sub-Treasury. The decline pf only $567,399 in the deposit line isa highly favorable symptom, indi- cating an entire absence of distrust on the part of deposi- tors. The increase of $257,172 in legal tenders is in ac- cordance with the disbursements of the Sub-Treasury and the return flow of currency from the West. The deposits show a decrease of $567,390, which shows a diminution of the recent monetary pressure, the decrease in the last statement having been $8,172,046. The decline in specie is owing both to the demand for customs duties and ox- port. Tho discount line is a little less active, and first class commercial paper passes at 789 per cent, but fair names submit to 10 a 12. The gold market was steady. The opening price was 145%, from which there was an advance of 1, followed by a relapse to the opening price, at which it stood at the close of business. Loans were made flat. Foreign exchange was steady at last Friday's quota- tions, and bankers’ bills at sixty days were quoted at 108% a %. Petroloum stocks were on the whole steady at the first board. Pithole Creek closed 90c. lower than at the rame time on Saturday, First National advanced Ic., Rynd Farm advanced 2c. At the second board the market was heavy. The closing quotations were:—Pithole Oreek $0 75, Rynd Farm 95c., Tack 27c., Oil Creek $1 50, Oceanic 580., Germania 42c,, Bradley $1 15, Benehof Run $12 25.
