2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Taurapay, Oct, 26—6 P. M. ‘The stock market exhibited a most decided tendency towards improvement at the opening of business this morning, and at the first session of the public board prices were higher than at the close of business last evening, At the first regular board it was steady, with the exception of Erie, which was strong, closing at two per cent advance upon yesterday’s second board quo- tation, Prairie du Chien 34, Uhio and Mississippi cortif- cates 3s, New York Central 3. The latter was vigor- ‘ously hammered by the brokers representing the party buying, with a view to obtaining control of the road, and who, of course, want to get the cash stock as low as they can, A well known gentleman who is allied in interest with those who control the Hudson and Harlem roads has left for Europe with the view of securing proxies there, and this, together with other signs, foreshadows a spirited contest, and probably a change of management in the future. Reading closed 34 lower. Government securities were depressed in consequence of the report by the Africa that five-twentics had declined to 673; a 63 on the London Stock Exchange. Coupon sixes of 1831 de- clined 34, five twenties 3%, new issue 3. After the call Erie rose to 90, notwithstanding the quotation of 5734 a 583¢ for the stuck in London, and it was generally believed that the speculative director of the Erie road had become a buyer. The English railway party visited the room while the board was in session, and ‘afterwards made a call at the Gold Room and Sub- Treasury. It was at the same time rumored on the street that they were buyors of Erie on their personal account. It is all but certain that unless the Atlantic and Great Western Company make a satisfac- tory arrangement with the Erie road they will build ap extension of their own to New York, which they - gay they can do in eighteen months from the time of commencing operations, But now that the speculative director is at the turning poiat from ‘‘bear’’ to “bull” the prospect of an arrangement with the Great Western Company brightens, and it is more than probable that they will have no occasion to covstruct the threatened new highway from Salamanca. At the open board at one o'clock the market was strong, and a general advance took place. ‘At the second regular board it was firm, and New York Central closed % higher than at the first board, Erie 2%, Hudson 1%4, Michigan Southern 134, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3%, Northwestern preferred 3, Rock Island \y, Fort Wayne %, Ohio and Missouri certificates 34. Government securities were steady, At the half-past three open board the market was buoyant. New York Central closed on the call at 9724, Erie 9234, Hudson River 106%, Reading 115, Michigan Southern Cleveland aud Vittsburg 81, Rock Island 107%, Northwestern preferred 6424, Prairie du Chien 6244, Mariposa 1144. Afterwards, on the street, the market continu ascendant. Eric sold at 93, New York Centra! Michigan Southern 7334, eland and Northwestern preferred 6434. The latte larly strong in anticipation of the forthe port of the company for the last two years. It is stated by those who have had the proof sheets of the report, which will be published on Monday or Tuesday next, and which has been looked forward to with considerable interest, that jt rapresents the « yto have seven hundred and twenty-live miles of class road and only about twelve millions of bonded debt. The floating debt has been pa'd off out of the caruings of the road, The latter agiragated during the month of September last $946,000, and the estimated earnings for the present month of October are $970,000. ‘The total earn nes of the road from last July to July, 1866, are nine millions, which is equivalent to nine per cent upon the entire capital s The com- pany requires two millions of new rolling stock to meet the increased traiiic of the road, including fifty locomo- tives anda th i cars. But itis represented th the company cau defray the cost of these entirely out of its earnings during the next twelve or eighteen months by passing the dividend on its common stock. The demand for tnoney to-day was freely met at seven per cent on call, lenders having become more confident of the future of monetary aifuirs, in consequence of the oMfc.al announcement that no more funding of the cur- roncy will take place, unless Congress, after its next meeting, should approve such a course, which it may possibly do in order to counteract the effact of the two or threo hundred millions of additional national bank — currency which it is likely to euthorize, Commercial paper is in moderate supply and averags demand at7 a 10 for the best grado. The disbursements on account of the temporary loan yesterday aggregated $400,000, $500,000 of which were for Clearing House certifica To-day about $700,000 were disbursed upon the hetopemer Joan, The gold market opened at 14535 and drooped to 144%, after which it rallied to 145% a 145%. Loans could only be made by paying 6 a 7 per cent interest on the currency received. Foreign exchange was dul! at 109.109 for bankers’ sterling at sixty days. The firmness of cotton here and abroad induces shipments and depresses the o market. Southern bankers’ bills are quoted at 108% a Petroleum stocks were generally firm at the first board. Bennehoff Run sold at $13 85, Kergen Coal and 0.1 85c., Buchanan Farm 67¢., Bradley $1 10, Cherry Ria 26c., First National 69c., Ham McClintock (b. 3) $7, McKinley (b. 5) $2 60, Manhattan 26e., The Kuropean advices by the Africa aro fa ‘wo anticipated they would be. 011 Creek $1 59. rable, as The rlight decline in d is obviously owmg to the spirited correspondence between Mr. Adams and Lord Russel! on the subject of our claims for damages by the rebel privateers fitted out im England. But it is quite clear that nothing serious is likely to result from the opinions upon ixternational law interchanged, and that mutual interests will lend to mutual concessions, which will obviate ail difculties. » The gtockbolders of tho Third Avenue Railroad Com- ‘pany ; will oloct a new set of directors or re-clect the old board, the latter being moet likely, on tle 8th of Novem- ber. ‘The business at the Sub-Treasury to-day was as fol- lows :— Total receipts Payments... Balance... For customs. . On account of government loan. Tho following is the amount of American stocks and bonds held in England, whereon the interest has not been paid for some time:— Confederate cotton loan. 19,442,195 « «4. $128,000,000 —A meeting of the ‘bondholders of the shove stocks was held in London on the 10th instant, at which a resolution was adopted naming Mr. Lewis Haslewood, Mr. Schofield, M.P., Mr. Gowan, Dr. Black and Mr. E. Hasiewood a committee to represent the interest of the bondholders; as also a resolution appropriating one half year's coupon, out of each settlement that may be effected, to meet their expenses and remunerate them for their labore.
