2 sce ee oe: FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. sebbbi ee. v4 Wepsespay, Oct. 25—6 P. M. The stock market opened with more firmness ‘ban | the bears, who recommenced their operations last even- ng, anticipated, and although they continued to ham- mer it vigorously it gradually rose against them. At the first regular board Reading closed % higher than at the second board yesterday, Michigan Southern 14. New York Central was 3 lower, Erie, Cleveland and Pitts- burg 34, Northwestern , preferred %, Rock Island X, Fort Wayne %, Prairie du Chien’ 4, Ohio and Mississippi | certificates 34. Government securities were quiet. Cou- pon sixes of 1881 were 3 higher, ten-forties 3, five- twenties 1, Seven-thirty notes of the second series im- proved 34. At the open board at one o'clock the market was strong, and prices were 3 a1 per cent higher. At tho second board it was dull and a fraction lower. Erie closed 3; higher than at the first board, Prairie du Chien 134, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 34, Cumberland 34. New York Central and Quicksilver were unchanged. Reading declined 3. Government securities were firm. Coupon five-tweaties improved 34. At the open board at half-past three the market was buoyant, and Ente closed on the call at 8734, New York Central 96%, Hudson River 106%, Keading 114%, Michi- gon Southern 71%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 78%, Rock Island 10734, Iiinois Central 134, Northwestern 3034, preferred (b.3) %, Fort Wayne (8.3) 974, Prairie du Chien 613{, McGregor Western 22, Cumberland 427%, Mari- posa ll. Afterwards, on the street, the market continued strong and prices in the ascendant. At 4:50 P. M. Clevoland and Pittsburg sold at 79, Michigan Southern 72, New York Central 9744 a 9734, Erie 87% a 34. ‘The demand for money has been moderately active at seven per cent on call, and, although one or two banks called in some of their loans, there were very few com- plaints of a difficulty in borrowing on good collatera’s at the legal rate. Some of the most prominent lenders de- clined lending to parties on the Stock Exchange sus- pected of being in the “bear” conspiracy to create arti- ficial stringency, The efforts of these persons to lock money out of the market for the sake of subsery- ing their own speculative ends will prove futile, and in effect they may be likened to drawing water by the bucket from a lake. Wherever there is a vacuum, either in the lake or in the money market, it is soon filled, and the attempts of a band of desperate, unscrupulous, and, to some extent, frresponsible spec lators, to control monetary affairs at this, the financial centre of the country, instead of being seconded as they have been in more than one instance by the banks, ought to be severely discouraged. Jacob Little, as Ursa Major, used long ago to play the trick of borrowing when he had no need of money, and he was shrewd enough to borrow from those he knew the “bull” houses were in the habit of relying upon, so that the shoe might be made to pinch just where he wanted it to pinch. But the contracted order of things under which he worked in those days has given place toa financial expansion which at the present time ombraces nearly » thousand millions of currency, and the one man power has passed into local history, and even the reputed wealthiest men in Wall street would be as chaff before the wind should they venture upon the perlous exploit of opposing the popular current. Already it is believed that some of the latter, who boast of a controlling influence over the market, and who regard the Stock Exchange ia the same spirit as wolves look upon a sheepfold, have, in street parlance, been badly hurt, and that if they bad to settle their out- standing contracts to-morrow they woalt be found waat- ing and henceforward be numbered {a the long proces- sion of “lame ducks.’ Not afew drew conclusions to this effect ax they witnessed certain operations to-day. The demand for discounts is not pressing; but very few names are taken at seven per cent unless from regular customers. The general rate varies from 8 to 10 for the best grade of commercial paper. The gold market weakened from 1463; at the opening to 145% a 44 at the close, The supply is very abundant, and it can only be lent by the payment of 5 a7 percent interest on the currency received. The heaviness of foreign exchange tends to its depression. Large amounts of Southern bankers’ bills, drawn } oats, 23,287 do. rye, 1,800 do. malt and 21,200 do. barley.
