2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. | sm Turspay, Oct. 24—6 P.M. pe sioht mache wee uns SP session of ‘die open board, and Eric sold at 87}, New York Central 983;, Reading 116%, Michigan Southerm.72}4, Cleveland. and Pittsburg 705, Rock le!aud 10934, Northwestern 3074, Northwestern proferred G44, Fort Wayne 98%, Praire ‘du Chicn 60%, Camberland 43.» At the regular-Board pric receded under sales to realize, New York Central closed % higher than at the second board yes- torday, Erie %, Reading &, Michigan South- ern 2%, Winols Central 4, Cleveland and Pittsburg, 1%, Northwestern preferred! 4, Rock Island 1%, Fort Wayno ‘<, Prairie dp Chien 3, ‘Cumberland 1%. Ohio and Misslasippt certificates were umehanged. Thore was 4 rale of 200 Harlow Railroad at ‘TT, and another 200 at 75--its Grat appearanes on. tho ‘Ast for many months. Government securities were stronger, Coupon five-twenties advanced 3¢ a X¢ ; seven- thirty notes of the third serics 34. Areport was current that Mr. Cornelius Vanderbilt had been thrown from his wagon and injured, and this led to considerable sales of New York Central and Hud- son River, under the impression ‘that if he died his stocks might be thrown upon the market. ‘When, however; i was ascertained that Commodore’s injuries were vory slight, the ex-] Citement ‘abated, This ‘recalled to him a similar state -of feeting which once ‘prevailed some years ago, when the stotk of the Nicaragua Transit Company was actively dealt im. Tlie Commodore was sick, and his decease would have greatly disturbed te market value; so the shrewdest and most intorested speculators made it a peiut to waylay the Commodore's dootor dally and pat | | aome such iquestion as, “How's the Commodore's this morning?” Those are some of the ludicrous incl- donts that occasionally underlie stockjobbing, ‘The market woakenod after the call and then became strong again. At the open boardat one o'clock it was steady. ‘At the second regular board it weakened unger renowod operations of the bears. New York Central closed. 3¢ lower than at the first board, Erie 14, Hudson River 134, Roading 4, Michigan Southern 3, Cleveland and Pitts- burg 1, Northwestern 34, preferred 3, Rook Island 34, Fort Wayno i, Ohio ond Missiasippt certificates 34. Prairie du Chien was unchanged. Government securi- ties were firm, Coupon sixes of 1881, ten-forties and now five-twonties advanced 3. After the call the market was hammered by the bears, who at the same time circulated » false report that a steamer had arrived, reporting an advance of the Bank of England rate of discount to eight per cent and a de- cline in Erie to 563g; alao that the Atiantic and Great Western Railway Company had leased ‘tho lines extend. ing from Corry, Pa., at its junction with the Great Western, to New York, vin the Sunbury and Erie, the Catawissa, the Lehigh Valiéy and the Morris and Essex railways, But, upon inquiry from the Great West rn Company, we found this report to be without founda tion. The Morris and Essex and Catawissa companies have, we understand, offered to lease thelr re spective lines; but it is very improbable that tho Atlantic and Great West ru Company will avail itself of this opportunity. The speculative director of the Erie road is employing every effort to injure the property of his own company and dopreas its stock In the market, In ‘the hope of being /enabied”to buy back at lower igures the stock which he sold some weeks ago, preparatory to running the price ap egain. At the opon board at balf-past three New York Central closed at 96, Evie 85%, Hudson River (seller 8) 105%, Reading 11474, Michigan Southern 70%, Clevoland and Pittsburg 774s, Cieveland and Toledo 102, Roek Island 107, Northwest:rn 2034, preferred 6834, Fort Wayne 9734, Praérie du Chien 60, Obiv and Missikalppl cortit< cates 2144, Camber! 4 Afterwards, on the streot, the market was steudy, and at five P. M. Eriewas quoted at 8534, Now York Coutral 96 096%. The money market was generally reported easy at 7 per cent on call till after two o'clock, when some of the bears resumed their efforts to produce stringoncy, and, although in no need of loans, get out on a tour of Inquiry for money. This had some effect in inducing weak holders of stocks to soll out, and lower prices followed during the rest of the afiernoon. The banks report a subsidence of the drain westward; but the fact that exchange on New York at New Orleans and Mobile ts at a discount of 2 a 3 per cont keeps up the flow of currency in that direction. The necessities of the South will, however, be likely soon to neutralize in great part tho effect of the large shipments of cotton which are taking place at Southorn ports, and which are the direct cause of the Grain of legal tenders southward. Some of the banks also report a return of doposits suddenly and suspi- clously withdrawn during the time the money market was boing manipulated by the bears a week or so ago. The disbursements at tho Sub-Treasury on account of the fomporary loan continue, but the cutire withdrawals ince the recent pressure set in form but a small portion of the amount of such deposits held at the and of Sop. tember, $36,249,660 of the five per cent deposita being thea recorded in the debt statement and $79,017,960 of the six per cent deposits. Tho notices of withdrawal mataring to-day aggregated only $230,000. There is a q00d supply of commercial paper offering, and the best grade passes at 7 a9 por cxnt. The gold market was firm, the opening price being "1463;, from which there was an advance to 146%, anda subsequent relapse of 34, the closing quotation being 6%. Foreign exchange was dull, and good bankers! bills at sixty days for sterling were quoted at 109 net. Petroleum stocks were steady and moderately active at the first board. Pithole Creok was 16c. higher than at the same time yesterday, Buchanan Farm 5c. At the second {t continued steady, with the exception of United States, whioh declined 30c., closing at $29 80.
