About a week since there was arraigned before the magistrate one George Gladwia, @ native of Connecticut, twenty-nine years of age, whom Captain Jourdan and ‘officer Wooldridge bad arrested on a charge of larceny. On being arraigned before Judge Hogan, at the Tombs Police Court, complaint was made that, having pat up at the St. Nicholas Hotel, with a female companion, under the assumed name of ‘H. Trowbridge,” he contrived, by forging the name of a former guest of the establish- ment, to obtain possession of several packages contain- ing mortgage bonds to the amount of two hundred thousand dollars, which bad been left for safe keeping in charge of the hotel clerk. The accused was also charged with having forged the name of ‘“‘H. Trowbridge” toa check, of which he feloniously obtained possession; and, as he pleaded guilty to both complaints, he was com- mitted to the Tombs for trial. The entire case, witha number of highly interesting details, has been fully reported in the Hxnazp, and was read, no doubt, with sufficient attention to preclude the necessity of republi- cation. On Sunday an article was reproduced from the Hart- ford Cowrant, in which it was stated that Emma—the girl who had accompanied Gladwin to this city—had de- camped with one thousand nine hundred dollars of the stolen money, It was further stated that the accused was a counterfeiter and a desperate character, and He! such to be considered by the public and the offi the law. Consequent upon the perusal of this announce- ment, Glsgyr!n, withoug depying his his gwn guilt, explicitly @eclared that the girl was innocent, but his wife ‘was guilty of the theft. Such was his anxiety 10 make known the truth that he at once requested the attend- ance of a raporter, being desirous of giving his own version of the case to the public, In R compl'anng with his request # visit was paid tho man, ‘whd now lies in confinoment {n éelt No. B ot the City Prison, ° THB APPEARANCE OF GLADWIN. ‘The accused ts Of medium height, rather stoutly built, with sandy hair and carelessly shaven face.
