NIAGARA FALLS. ‘einatldinaklaameaalacints Whe of the Season—No Seces- sionists There this Year—Delegates to the Commercial Convention at Detroit— ‘The Reciprocity Treaty, de., do. OUR WIAGARA FALLS CORRESPONDENCE. Nracapa Farts, July 8, 1865. ‘THE SEASON OPENED. ‘The season at Niagara may be said to have fairly to-day; for the early trains have all ar- rived crowded to their fullest capacity, and the passage ways of the principal hotels begin to be Yambered up with every description of luggage, from the monster Saratoga trunk of Miss Flora MeFlimsey down to Mr. Washington Jones’ un- ing satchel. Males, eager to secure rooms, are elbowing each other five or six deep ‘at the office, and females, in a fever of anxiety to rid themselves of their travelling gear and blaze forth in their watering place finery, are waiting in anxious suspense in the parlors and halls. On the stoops and balconies, picking their teeth, | enjoying yesterday’s Heraup, or carelessly sur-" veying the swarms of new arrivals, lounge the more fortunate pleasure-scekers who have “sl- ready secured the best quarters, and cam gaze ‘with indifference upon the struggle for priority at the register. The hotels have all put on their summer cos- tume, and look clean, cool and comfortable. There is a great rivalry among them this season in music, and fine brass bands play constantly from the balconies of the leading houses. The Clifton, on the Canada side, treats its patrons to really excel- Jent music. The Cataract House has s band from ‘iroy—ona of the best in the State out of New York—and the International bas made s draft upon the musical talent of Buffalo. There is @ marked change at the Clifton this season, No brawling, blustering seces- sionista are to be met with, fat and greasy, lounging in the barrooms and sponging upon every chance customer for their whiskey. The Union is much more respectfully spoken of now by the natives on this (at present) British side of the river, and the pro- prietors are all trae and loyal Americans. The Fourth was celebrated at the house in fine le, the American flag floating from the roof, and fireworks at Ee sending their rhe to mingle with the foam of the Horseshoe It is proper to say that the Canadians took — in the celebration and displayed a commenda- le spirit of good fellowship upon the occasion. THE TWO CURIOSITY SHOPS are in full blast, and make the strects appear gay with their showy fans and bright colored orna- ments. The copper-colored ladies of the wigwam are as busy as ever, working at their bead purses and slippers, and recalling to one’s mind the days when the tomahawk and war paint formed features im the magnificent scenery of the mighty cataract. CHANGED APPEARANCE OF THE FALLS. There is no occasion to speak of the Falls, for they have already been written to death; but it is apparent to the eye of one who has not seen them — msi pat that the face of the American ‘ably undergone a marked chang: ne — e is more s erogula than f formerly, but the broken only adds to the beauty of the cataract, THE NEW BLONDIN. A rope stretches across the chasm, where some years sgo Blondin delighted some and disgusted ethers with his performances. Another aspirant ~ @ fool’s fame, one Leslie by name, has walked ross this rope, and is announced to repeat the tno next ‘Tuesday, and at intervals during the season. A NEW BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER. The New Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Party. THE UNITED SERVICE SOCIETY OF THE STATE OF NBW YORK. ‘The idea of forming a great soldiers’ and sailors’ party to control the coming fall elections has frequently been mooted; but most of our readers may not be aware that euch soctotios are already springing up in various parts of the country. The men who saved our nation through the medium of bullets will now oust the corrupt office holders through the medium of ballots. The societies are Ae cae “United Service Society, State of ——-,’” and have branches either in Con; ressional or Assembly districts, In this State there will be one bundred and twenty-eight organizations, independent of the central ization: compgees. of delegates. e central os anization for this State was organized about three weeks since, and General G. K. Warren was Socted president, and a platform of principles prepared. The pistform, however, was not adopted, ns te rbees in the hands of a new committee for evisu, and society resolved that the platform should i itty acted on at the special meeting calle July 10. aly @ meeting was held on Monday evening at ftmonic No. 90 Thirteenth street, to take final action on the s tiees of principles. Among the many public nussances to which you ocoa- sionally allude, you seem to forget the monster evil of blockading the city sidewalks, which is almost universal, and which the authorities adopt no measures to prevent, The sidewalks of all the business streets, except Broad- pe are so lumbered up with boxes, barrels, &c., that are almost useless to the pedestrian. This is all Poilcally wrong, and would not be tolerated in any other eity for a single day. Our citizens have imbibed the erroneous idea that the portion of the sidewalk opposite their houses or stores belongs to, or is rented by, the occupants, which idea seems to be countenanced by the resolution adopted last week by tho City Fathers, “that ny occupant can give or let the eidewalk opposite his premises for a staud or stands.’ It is easy to ave to what evile this abeurd resolution would lead. A store- Keoper or resident might let the sidewalk opposite the store or house which he occupies, for more than his rent comes to, and thue be ront free. In the cage of a tene- ment houee the resolution does not define to whom the sidewalk belongs, whether to each or ali of the sub- tenants, or whether it iz to be parcelled out am bey or whether the landlord is to have the sole priv! loaning or letting it. If the law be se our corporation has laid down, the city should build distinct sidewalks for pedestriang, say along the second story of the houser, as in Chester, Eng- Jand, and not allow those to be annexed for warehousing or dumping purposes, If pedostrians have a legal right to the present sidewalks, the police should see that right enjoyed by them in fact, as well as in imagination. Base Ball. NEW YORK V8. BROOKLYN—-AN EXCITING CONTEST IN WILLIAMBBURG. A very interesting game took place on the Caion ball grounds, Brooklyn, on Wednesday, between the Empire and Resolute clubs of the two cities, the result of which, after a close contest in the latter part of the gam@ was a well earned victory for the Empires by @ score of 29 to 26. The play opened favorably for the Resolutes by a score of 8 to 0 in the first innings, but they were after- wards pot out for blank ecores three innings in succes. sion, the Empires in the meantime adding 12 runs to their score, the totals at the close of the fourth inn! being 12 to 3in favor of the New Yorkers. En the es the Resolutes began to bat Martin's pitching, and eight Tuns before they were disposed of, their op- ponents only securing 4. ATLANTIC V8. GOTHAM. On Friday the champions of the Atlantic Club visit Hoboken for the second time this season, their opponents’ being the Gotham Club. This match will attract a large crowd of spectators anxious to see whether the Atlautics will defeat the Gothams as badly as the Mutuals did. MUTUAL V8. GOTHAM, Between one and two thousand persons were aerembled on the ball ground at Hoboken, on Tues- day afternoon, to witness the first contest this season between the above clubs. It was expected to have been a fine game, bat the state of the ground was eweh ag to interfere with good flelding, and the result was somewhat of a disappointment. The Mutual club lacked the services of their efficient pitcher, Harris, and, as bis substitute was a swift pitcher, the game proved ‘to be as and uninteresting as most of the matches were im 1863, when the same style of play was in vogue, all the work being done by the pitcher and catcher and one or two of the infielders, while th ap oo wero idle. On tho Go- bong side nearly all of their players were in very bad the first and gecond bases being the only os played up to the right mark.
