\Wapmuapay, May %—6 P.M. J Aooording to the indications of yesterday the stock has shown increased activity to-day, and prices ‘have been in the ascendant, The rise is entirely specu lative, but the outstanding ‘short’ interest is so large that the bulls are emboldened to pit their strength against the bears; and although there is ‘vory little out-. aide tafluence to support them it ts quite possible ‘that they may succeed in materially advancing quotations during the next ten days They have am easy moucy market in their favor, and the upward turn in @old ta not without its effect, At the firs Doand New York Central was % higher than ‘at the second hoani yesterday, Erie %, Hudson River 1), Reading X, Michigan Southern %, lilinols Contra} 1, Cleveland and Pittsburg 17%, Rock Island 1%, Fort Wayné 1, Obio and Mississippi certificates 4, Cum- beriand 1%. Government securities were dull but steady. After the call and at the open board at one o'clock the market continued to improve, and Erie sold up to 14%. A parcel of Gve thousand soven-thirty notes sold ‘at 09% during the session. At the second regular board prices suffered a partial relapse, Erle was % higher than at the close of he first board, Reading X, Quicksilver X, Cumberland . New York Central was i lower, Hudson River , Michi- gan Southern }, IMinols Central %, Cleveland and Pittebarg %, Rock Island 7%, Fort Wayne %, Oblo and Mississippt certificates 3. Govern- mont securyies remained dull, but steady. It was supposed that the news of Johnston's surrender in Europe would have advanced quotations for five-twenties; bat we learn by the China that it had little effect, and that on the 12th inst, the closing quotation for them on the London Stock Exchange was 63% & 64. ‘At the open board at half-past three, coupon. five- twenties of the old issue sold at 103}, and the railway Liat was lower, but it closed firm. New York Central sold on tho call at 9134, Erio 735 a 3%, Fort Wayne 93%, Michigan Southern 6034 a 60, Cloveland and -Pittsburg 63%, Rock Island 9544, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 26%, Cumberland 39%, Quicksilver 64. Later, on the streot, quotations improved, and Erie sold as high as 74%, the whole market sympathizing with the advance, The bears are divided fp opinion as to tho immediate future of the market, and while somo aro beginning to “‘covor’ others aro putting out frosh options, Tho miscel/aneous crowd of bull operators are moro or less irregolute because distrustful of their leaders, They aro all like so many sheep, ready to jomp over tho one straw; and the changes which thoir opinions undergo every twenty-four hours or loss aro marvellgus. They never care to inquire into tho value of the property they are buying or solling, their only object being to ascertain how tho market is going, or, in other words, how a parcel of moneyed speculators are going to operate, If 60 and 80 ells out a fall, it is eupposed, would be the Inevitable consequence; while the very persons who stand in fear of him have no real knowledge, and cannot have, of his movements, and it often happens that when so and 60 ts sup} to be selling he is buying, and vice versa, or out of the market entirely. The small fry of Wall street Constitute a monster of ignorano>, vacillation and idlo- ness, They operate tu the dark and make money only by acc'dent, and their leaders are little bet- tor. That the railway securities of the country shold be op »ndent for their market value vpoa such @ fraternity fs to be regretted. Gold has been strong and moderately active, tho ten- dency of the premium being decidedly upward, potwith- standing the fact that speculation is mainly in favor of a fall. Popular sentiment, however, canaot long control tho price of a commodity which is scarce, and for which tho demand is imperative, Gold, from being unrcason- ably high, has fallen to a lower point than the condition of tho public finances warranted, and as a natural consequence the Jegitimate demand forces it higher, Such isthe condition of the produce markets hero and in Europe that at the present price of gold there fs little or no inducement to ship anything; and honoe'while our exports are slackening our imports aro inereasing, and the reopening of the Southern ports will tend to make this feature of our trade more decided; for tho South is yawning for supplies, and has, probably, far Jess to.give than it will crave. Gold opened ms 15214 and rose steadily to 184, after which it dropped. off to 18334, Dut iteubsequently rose to 185, and at five P, M. stood at 134%. Foreign exchange has been active and very firm, and buyers who have been holding back for lower prices are boginning to come into tho market. Bankers ask 1104 KK for their sixty day bills, and 110% at short sight, ‘Ono result of the Aght exportations is an extreme scarcity of commerciat bills, which forces drawers into the gold market, The latter are quoted at 109 a %. ‘Tho supply of money continues abundant at 5 a 6 per cent for loans at call, The demand is limited, and @ more active market would conduce to a healthier cireulatiqn. The Tressury is insuring pro- longed caso in order to facilitate subscriptions to the soven-thirty loan, and to prevent decline in its gold- Dearing securitics in the face of their low price abroad. ‘The discount line is inactive, and first class commercial paper’ is rated at 6a 8 porcent. The banks as woll as Private lenders have, however, been critical of names of late, and they, asa rule, prefer investing their capital in the form of call loans, ‘Tho Boston steamer to-day took two hundred and fifty thousand dollars in specte, and about a million and 9 half is reported for Saturday's steamers, Tho rebel loan was quoted in London at 1214 om the 22th inst. ; @ fact which shows that there are some par- ties interested in is whose tenacity of opinion ts such that they cannot realize that the end of the rebellion hes really come. The news of the capture of Jed. Davis Will, however, bo a “‘sottler”” for them. ii 10034 rr Hudson do 500 1S 93% {oo win soiiviadlit a 00% oe ene 8 4 Erie 6th mort, 9436 1000 Tol & Wistmex 91 1000 P, Ft W & C le 102 04%, 6000 P, FLW &C2dm 91 ber} Cler, Sota RR 190 15 she Conti'| Bank 98 10 Merchants’ Bank 111 100 Canton Company 96% 600 a . 36 500 Chic’ & NW RR. 2635 a ane 87 800 Cumb Coal pref. 38 100 0... 4.0, B88 200 Clev & Toi Rt 200 do. 39) 200 Chi & I a. 60 Quicksilver MgCo 6334 : do, ..24 call 63 2 os! 200 Atiantic MSS Co 146 700 Cary Improvm’t do... 815 Pitt, FOWACRR 94% WO..ceeeees OMG oe 883eS283 4 Chic, Burd RR 10888 81H &StJosoph RR 30 SROOND BOARD.
