2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Farmar, May 5—6 P. M. ‘The stock market has been very dull to-day, the uncer- winty attending the operations of the bull and boar tenders in Erie having the effect of sem!-paralyaing spo- culation, There are sundry conjectures with regard to the ten thousand shares of the stock sold in a single transaction by the prominent boar on Wednesday. Tho stock was delivered yesterday, to certain parties supposed to be acting in conjunction with the promiuent bull ope- trator, who is a director of the Erie company, and rumor has it that most of the stock was borrowed for delivery. On the other hand, !t is surmised that the leading bear had the stock on hand, and that he bought part of it in the London market. The quidnuncs are somewhat puzzled to understand the game, but the contestants are evidently watching each other very closely, for when one ‘buys the other gells, and vive versa. At the first board New York Central closed 1 per cont lower than at the second board yesterday, Erie 134, Reading %, Michigan Southern 2%, Illinois Contral 4, Qoveland and Pittsburg 2%, Northwestern %, Rock Island 2}4, Fort Wayne 1}4, Ohio and Mississippi certif- ates %, Quicksilver 14. Government securities were dull, By 9 misprint in the stock list yesterday morning @oupon ten-forties were reported to have sold at 97% a 0756, instead of 0614 a 965;—the actual price. At the open board, at one o'clock, prices wero gene- rally 3 8 1 per cent higher, At the second regular board the market was very dull. New York Central was % Nighor than at the closo of tho first board, Erie %, Michigan “Southern 3;, Cleveland and Pittsburg 4, Northwestern 3, Rock Island 25g, Fort Wayno 2%, Cumberland 3. Reading was % lower, Quicksilver 34. Government securities were dull and a shade lower, At the open board, at haif-past throe, there was a general improvement. New York Central sold at 9714, Erie 793, Michigan Southern 6034, Reading (53) 100%, Mlinois Contrat (83) 114, Rock Island 101, Northwestern 30%, Michigan Contral 111, Cumberland 47\{, Quicksilver, 6234. Gold bas boen on the whole firm to-day. The opening quotation was 1434, (fom which it advanced to 143%, after which, at vo P. M., it stood at 1425. The ‘velume of business tn the room was larger than yester- @ay, and more disposition was shown to buy. Foreign exchange is firm. Comzaercial bills at sixty days aro q1otedat 103% a 109; bankers, 109j, a 110, and 110% & % atshort sat, The supply of produce bills is limited, and thoy are in active demand. The steamer Costa Rica brought $694,281 in gold. ‘The supply of money shows no diminution, all loans ‘are made freely at 4.45 per cent, and owing to the tem porary dullness on the Stock Exchange the domand ia not heavy. There has, however, been a little more ac- tivity to-day than usual of late. The prevailing stagnation will in al! probability continue for some months at least. The discount lino is unchanged. The enormous sub scriptions to the seven-thirty notes result in drawing Capital from the interior te the great centres. The gold feoaring socuritics fall into comparative neglect by tho popularity of tho currency loan, but the former will pro- ‘ably prove to be the best security, and after the latter ts withdrawn, the six per cent bonds will bo at a higher premium than they are at present. Government securities were steady on the stroet late in the afternoon. The news from Kurope by the next and gubsequent steamers is anxiously awaited, in view of the important and favorable influence rocent events in this country will be Likely to exert upon the price of our securities held thers. There now appears to be less likelihood of serious commercial derangemerit and monetary stringency in Great Britain, consoquent upon the termination of the war than was originally supposed. In tho first place, although the war is over, trado with the South has not ‘been reopened, and it is still unceriain as to how far it will be pending tho formal declaration of peace and reconstruction. It is also equally uncertain how large ‘the quantities of produce in the South may be, while it ts certain that the seed time for this year's crop of cotton thas passed, and that coiton is, therefore, likely to bo ‘more scarce next year and probably year after than 4t ts now, The stock of cotton in England, on the Ist of April last, was 700,000 bales, being equal to the stock held on tho Ist of January, 1861, sinco which time it has been comparatively light and variable, ‘the supply at the beginning of 1802 having been 434,000 ‘dalos; at the same time in 1963, 228,000 bales, and at the amo timo in 1864, 575,009 bales. The London Zconomist, ‘dn a recent article, while admitting that ihe present stook ds larger than it has been for some yours, and that large shipments are on their way, argucs that considerable anxiety hangs over the future supply, and that the pros- pects of the British cotton trade are already creating much uneasiness in al! who look far aboad. It is appre- thended that thore may be a great scarcity of cotton in 1866 and 1867, as the fall which has already taken place in prices has been suillcient, if not materially to check production, to at least greatly alarm pro- ducers and discourage the vast efforts which have been made to grow cotton whorever ft can be grown. Itis believed that China and Japan, which last year sont to England fifty-two milion pounds, ‘will cease to sond any at all. Bengal and Madras, which gent three hundred and fifty thousand bales, will ship to hina as before, and stop unusual cultivation. The Turkish supply will again become procarious and unim- portant, and. Egypt and Brazil wiil fall back to the old eupply of two hundred thousand bales, as in 1860, instead of four hundred and sixty thousand, as in 1864; while ‘the Western and Northwestern provinces of India will gradually relapse into a supply of three-quarters of a million of bales. The argument is further pursued in this wise:— According to the most trustworthy information we have ben abie to collect no wise man will base his cal- culstions on a r estimate of the available stock of cotton now in the United States than one million of bales. Of lato little has been grown, while much has h has been spoiled, and a peace Seer and making every allowance for Amert- energy and promptitnde, it will teke @ conside- Table time to recollect tie scattered gene to reor- ganizo labor, to repair and recreate the means of trans- port, We will axsume—what, however, many persons would re"ise to admit—that noarly all the residual wegro poptilation in the cotton States will again be set to that special cultivation, either under compulsion or in- ducemnt of some kind. We will admit all the suppositions § most favorable to a lar and Prompt supply. Still, in any case, no fresh cotton worth mentioning ean reach this country in less than eight moni tor the next seed time subsequent to the restoration of pea 6 and order, e seed tine of this yoar is past. Granting that tho is over in July, ‘that plantations are revtored to their ov s, that the healing and reorga: processes are ut upon with the marvellous enterprise aud vigor wh r charatorizo our transatlantic bi stil it will bo February, 1866, before the new crop can bo rown, aud October or November before it ean reach England ih auy quantities And when it is ready to come we may safely calculate upon three things—all of which ought to mode- rate our expectations, First, that the erop of the first your, and perhaps even of the second, will not be like the and a halt ms of baies, Dut not more than two tillions at. the consiler- ing how many of the plantations have been ruined, and how large a Loy gy the uegro population has been gee raed or died, Secoudly, that of this moderate crop the Americans themecives will want probably one- third at loast. And thirdly, that the cotton will cost more to grow than it did before the great convulsion, andbofore it reaches us will be burdeusd by an export duty of three pence or four pence in the pound; eo that instead of being laid down in Liver i at six pence a nd, and yieiding 2 good profit at that price, it will y cost from tom pence to one ehilling. If this bo #0, then there ia no reason why Surat at eight pence and nine pence should not hold ite ground; and the present panic i# at once excessive and premature. It will be a evil if new and distant countries sre discouraged m growing and forwarding cotton earlier or more de- cidedly than is eg Sooner _ later, no doubt, as we have always said, the United &i will beat all other oetton growing countries ont of the market, with the exception of moderate supplies of special qualities from liom Bombay, Egypt and Brazil; but it will be later and ‘Bot sooner, and we need not ‘augment the catastrophe by anticipating it. All this goes to show considerable farsightedness in fadging of the future of the cotton trade, which Is calcu- lated to aver! ponte and maintain a higher range of prices fer the staplo than would be likely to rile under a lems thoughtful view of the prospects of the market. ‘The British estimate ts not fer from correct, and the more Correct it is the less will the price of cotton be subjected : NEW YORK HERALD, SATURDAY, MAY 6, 1865. tome respecting trade with Bouthera according to Me), Prince, Bagus, M4 days, —— ‘4 : Cras ame ‘an private, ormas son boxes | aur to Walah leanne: apt catamaran Darinrcer: May 1, 1865 ‘extraot logwood, 80 on ne one 3 tobacco, | Bark Union Care te Or oeeee eel | FD te enter cinet the, Bescon order | on private ‘and 25 (ons measurement goods at 20s.; | Wit! ue to manta, incuod"hyel 2, 1866, directing the remoral of rect: | on priv ‘arms and 36 (one mesearoment var aac tt figs saad Sons wane internal domestic and arse lard om private terms. ‘The charters ere: A Bremen | Do', 8 Oines home with toemer w Sati Cari nd with wach prt re Staton of Gor, | '2"Sp tng staran, Bev om pve tra, and tain etwart of ow Baior, apered sian, Florde isbamnay Missisappt and Loins east ot ola tes b four, 00e.
