ie FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Torpay, March 28—6 P. M. " @he gold market is experiencing that lull which usually follows @ period of great excitement and panic. Gold has been a little more abundant to-day than yester- Gay, but there is still a difference of 34 a % between cash and regular sales, The sudden disappearance of 80 much coin from the market as to make deliveries more or less difficult has excited no little eurprise, aud the mystery with regard to it bas to some extent operated Against a recovery, speculators being apprehensive of its immediate return; but of this there is no probability under existing circumstances, The quotations during the day were:— 10:30 A. Me... eeee es LOOM 15436 “158% pets ae 5 a0 P ‘The panic in the gold rovm carried the premium lower than suited the interests of the government or the mer- cantile and financial community, and only the “shorts” in gold and stocks profited by the sudden fall. The latter by creating panic—which is at all times dangerous—endeavored to disseminate the false idea that we are to witness a rapid appreciation of the currepcy to par, and a speedy resumption ef specie payments aiter the war, The probabilities, however, are that the gold preminm will be higher at Intervals for some time after the cessation of hostilities than it is now, The Southern planters and others, for along period after the return of peace, will be likely to manifest trong prefer ence for gold over greenbacks, and the demand for specie for remittance to tue South will be very considerable. ‘The popular impression that we are very near the end of the war, and that with the latter will come an adjustment of values on or near a specie basis is erroneous, and has already done a great deal of harm. The condition of the national finances is such that so long as the war lasts the gold premium must be sustained, in order that the Treasury may raise the money necessary to meet current disbursements, We have pursued the path of inflation so long that it is impossible to turn back, unless by the adoption of radical measures, which fare no longer probable if possible. Tt is easy for any reflecting mind to perceive that inferences based upon the recent gold pauic are delusiv and that we shall have to go on in the present course and abide by its attendant vicissitudes, The volume of the currency {# vot only undiminished, bet increasing, and the national debs t ondergoing a continual and heavy augmentation, and so long «# Bo con- traction of the currency takes place, and no considerable reduction is made in the public expenditures, the great bulk of the people will be slow to fee! the effect of a gold panic, and the natural tendency of the premium and prices will be upward after every period of depression, The stock market was dull and devoid of speculative feeling at the first board, Erie was 54 lower than at the second board yesterday, Hudson River 13, Reading %, Michigan steady, Mi forties 4. However bad the finan- cial policy of the government may have been, the requi- site means for carrying on the war must be punctually provided, and the greater the blunders of the past the more imperative is the necessity for making the best of the existing situation.
