This is not the ease only on the ordinary days of business, when the community are ac- eustomed to the turmoil of traffie, but on the Sunday, the day of rest that sheuld bo from the tempta- tions and disqutet incident to the male of liquor, the trade ts carried on under the disguise of concert ealoons, yar- dena and sacred concerta Some of there places, the vilest dens of a great m flaunting thetr mero- Ucar attractions A ure = public, and by the man} wi though neminalty closed, are vistual! a to all comers. To be as this Grand Jury has been, to indict for offences pet person and property those who pro- cured the inzeatives to crime from the parties relied upon to convict them has been one of the most revolting parts of their sworn daty. They would call the attention of the lawmakers and tts admiatstraiors to these evils, so rife tm this city, thet, if practicable, legal remedy may be applied; and, in eoncluston, tv the admirable recommendation and obser- vations of a former Grand bow pag that “were patrolmen wa? Tho Grand Jury wore then discharged, with the thanks of the Court. In the course of the day a gentleman who wns a wit- nose against a man named Collingwood, charged with larceny, called the attention of Judgo Runsel to an edi- torial paragraph in a morning paper, which stated that Collingwood, and the witness who appeared against him, were “ticket of leave men,” recently arrived from Eng- land. The gentleman furnished hie Honor with the names of several reapectable gentlemen in the city to whom he referred, and claimed that such @ statement would materially injure him in the community.
