Rumor asserted that Sher- man’s tinatic as at present intended, is Brunewi near § Island, on the At- lantic coast, where there is a deop bay ¢ ble of accommodating @ large fleet, and that Beano regard was on his way to harass him. The prophecy of Jet. with regard to the march across Georgia was quoted, and the worst constructions were placed upon the military situation in that State by the ‘bulls,’ while the ‘‘bears’ argued that aforee lke Sher- man’s could disperse the ‘militia under General Howell Cobb with as much ease as the scanty army of Beauregard. The mere fact that the most idle rumors should influence the price of gold, and thereby the value of evcrything elec, as they do, is to be regretted; but so long as gold remains de- pendent upon the caprice of speculation this will de the case, and th evil is by that legisiation which wo have aiready pointed out.
