Tue Baltimore Telegrams, Batimors, July 7, 1864 The city is full of rumors this morning of an exciting oharacter tn regard to the rebel invasion. After careful inquiry, with @ desire to sift out the truth as far as possible, and with a view to avold acting ‘the part of an alarmist on one hand, by over stating, or, on the otber, encouraging false security by underrating tho state of alfairs, I sead you the following account, which is believed to be correct:— The most retiablo intelligence from Maryland Heights and the region beyond this morning warrants the belief that the rebel force now on thig side of the Poto- mac and on tho line of the Virginia si e is larger than at first supposed. It i believed that the rebel force is not far short of thirty thousand, Advices from Sandy Hook down to ten o’clook this morning say that an officer from General Sigel's head- quarters, on Maryland Heights, reports that skirmishing was going on back of the Heights; but the number of rebels there is small. With the aid of a glaes and the Signal corps the rebels can be observed towards Sharpsburg, driving off cattle, borses, &c., and plundering the farmers in the valley, No large force, however, ta visible. Advices from Greencastlo, Penney!vania, this morning, say th.t the rebels occupy Hagerstown this morning, but fn what force is not known, The train from Fredoriek is just in, and roports that Colonel Coles, of the Maryland cavalry, had a skirmish witha small rebel scouting force, four miles west of Fredorick, about two o'clock yesterday afternoon. It was ascertained subsequeatiy, however, that the force was quite small. Tho rebei officers dined at noon at TTagan’s Mountain Houre. * Tater in the day two pieces of Alexander's Maryland batiery, detachmonts of the Eighth Illinois cavalry and Colone! Cole’s Maryland cavalry went in pursuit of the robels, aod duriag last night drove a force of about one hundred rebels through Middletown. Walle in Middletown yesterday the rebels matte good us®? of thoir time, tn plundering the citizens of thoir horses and other property. One citizen, a stable keeper, Bemed Joshua Corrick, was called apon to deliver up his horses: but he resisted and said he would die first, where. upon he wag shot, and ts reported dead. Active moroments of our troops are going on, which it fg not proper, for prudential reasons, to partioniarize, — * The railroad is et{i! unobstructed as far as Sandy Hook, opposite Harper’s Ferry. At last advices it was believed that there was ouly a smail force of rebels on the Virginia shore, opposite the Polnt of Rocks. The revels ia Tarper’s Yerry have destroyed all the Tallroad property thore, including the telegraph and tirket offices, They have also burned a large quantity of rage. Geaeral Wallece is confident of boid- jug Frederick. We have no estimate of the killed and wounded, Reinforcements are rapidly pushing forward, and th is every reasow to believe that this movement of tho enemy will result only in disappointment and disaster to the rebel ca . The Chambersbarg Telegram Caamarnsncna, Pa., July 7, 1964, Aman from Hagerstown, just arrived at Greeucastie, says that McCausiand’s command, formerly Jenkins’, fif- teen hundred strong, cavalry, and mounted infantry and one battery, entered Hagerstown yesterday, and left at oloven o'clock by the Frederick pike, where the main body of the rebels have all gone, Small parties returned this morning, and mado a requi- sition on the people for fifteen hundred outfits and twenty thonsand dollars, under threats of burning the town, which was paid, Whe Harrisburg Telegrams. Arumor prevails that a force of severa! thousand are encamped just south of Middleburg, between Greencastle and Hagerstown, We do not believe it, The force levy- ing contributions at Hagerstown is partly Imboden’s and partly the old force of Jenkius, which led Leo's advance into Pennsylvania last year, before the battle of Getlys- burg. I bave trustworthy information that thero al rebels this side of Hagerstown. ‘We have information direct from Fingorstown to the effect that on Tuesday afternoon, at three o'clock, a robel ‘Squad, consisting of Ofteen cavalry men, commanded by Lieutenant Shaver, formerly of Martinsburg, Va., entered that place, His force appeared to be a reconnoltering party, aod they had only been in the town a few mo- ments when adetachment of our regular cavalry, from Carlisle, Pa., commanded by Lieutenant Molean, cashed into the place. A brief cavairy Sight immediately ensued in the etrests of Hagerstown, which resulted in the rebels boing driven out of the town with the loay of a liéutecant and two pri- vates, taken prisocors, ‘ About balf an hour after this tight the rebels again et tered the town, their forces consisting of cavalry and mounted infantry. Lieutenant MeLean, of the Union cavalry, finding his force too small to cope with the largo number of reboie, slowly fell back to the Pennsylvania line, carrying with him bis prisoners. ‘The robel=, after entering the town, et to work to de- Stroy the telegraph; Wut they had made no demonstration against the railroad when our informanta oft.
