Despite tho Tepresentation of General Heaurevard, she remiined, braving shells and Greek fire, tending the wounded and cheering all with her presence. Among the wounded officers under her ministering care was Mr. Andrew Do Rochelle, a descendant of one ofitbe nobicst Huguenot families ‘of this city, ‘This young man was full of the liveliest gratitude for bis tar burse; gratitude gave birth to @ ‘more tender sentiment; bis ‘suit was listened to; Governor Pickens gave his consent, and the marrluge was fixed for yesterday, the 23d of April. Lieutenant De Rochelle was on duty at Fort Samter {a the morning, and it was determined that the ceremony should take place at the residence of General Bonhe the evening at seven o'clock, At.the moment the copal clergyman was asking the bride if she was ready sheil fell upoy the root of the bui'ding, penetrated to ihe room where the company assembled, burst und wounded pine persons, and among the rest Miss Anna Pickeus. We cannot describe the scene that followed. Order was at last re estabdsbed and the wounded were | removed, all except the bride, who lay motionless upon the carpet. Her betrothed, kvecling and bending over her, was weeping bitterly ‘and trying to staunch the blood that welled from a terrible wound urder her left breast. A surgeon came and declared that Miss Pickens bad not longer than two hours to live. We will paint the genera! despair. When the wounded girl recovered hor consctousnes: she asked to know her fate, aud when they hositated to tell her—‘Andrew,’’ sho said, “I beg you to tell me tho trath. If I must die, I can die worthy of you.” Tue young eoldier’s tears were his answer, avd “Miss Anna, summoning all ber strength, attempted to smile Nothi ng could be more heartrepcing than to seo the agony of this brave girl struggling in the embrace of death and against Q terrible mortal pang. Governor Pickens, whose courage is known, was almost without consciousness, and Mrs. Pickens looked npow her child with the dry and haggard eye of one whose reason totters. Lieut. De Rochelle was the first tospeak, ‘Auna,’ he cried, “1 will die soon, too, but I would have you die my wife. There is yet time to unite us.” The young girl did not reniy; she was too weak. A slight flush rose for aw instant to her pale cheek; it could be seen that joy and pain were struggling in ber spirit for the mastery. Lying upon a sofa, ber bridal dress all stained with blood, her hair diwhevelled, she had never been more beauti‘ul, Helpeiess as she wae, Lieutenant De Rochelle took her hand and requested the Rev. Mr. Dickineon to proceed witb the ceremony, When it was time for the dving girl to say yes, her lips parted several times, but she could not articulate, At tast the word was spoken, wad a slight foam rested on her lips ‘The dying agony was near, The minister sobbed as he proceeded with the ceremony. We are private physicians emyi.yed, under contract by the Medical Director, to pertorm tho duties of medical officers on tho transports, in the field, regiment, post and general hospital wherever our services may be Tequired, for avd tp consideration of $100 per montb,’’ less one and one-half per cent internal revenue (except in the case of those sent into the Jeid, who are paid $118 83 per month) and this ‘in lieu of all Allowances and emolu- ments whatever’’—as mileayo, rations, forage and servants’ wages. We are obliged to assume all the responsibilitics’and perform ali the duties of commissioned officers, according to army regulations, and are subject to strict military discipline. We sre frequently ordered away from our posts or stations, at @ moment's Doiice,on detached service, in modiorl charge of troops to distent places, and fur such service receive no extra pay or compeusntion, but are compelled to defray our own treveliing expensen, with exception of transportation 19 kind which is fur- nished by the quartermaster. To are exposed to all the denver, ftigues, uardships and privations of war; to the miasmatis infuerces of unbealthy climites, and the perils of the ccoan. many contract surgeons having been killed, wounded and capiured by the evemy, to say nothing of those who have died #t their posse from sick- nese or beon lost at een. At the enme time we are denied pearly all the honors, privileges end immunities of offl- o pong others, rank and the fight to demand a court of inquiry or trial by court » artial, if charged with any breach of military law. We are also liable to be drafted into the military service of the United Onr p sition is anomalous, inasmuch ag we are nt ay nor soldiers. A large proportion of contract surgeons ved in our army are men of great professioval ability aud expe- rience, with families to mainiam, who have Jeft thuit bomes, and in many cases a lucrative practice, to serve their country In the Degtoniog of the rebellion, when the army wi aid in coin, $100 of $113 83 per month was perhaps ‘air Com| tion for our services; but, owing to ti Bee leprectstion of the national currency, and the quent increage in the Cost of all the necessaries of iite, it is not so now, In view of these facts pray that by an act of Con- grese our pay hereafter y be incressed from twenty - five to uhirty-three and ove third per cent; that we may be allowed mileage, or at leaxt our actual traveling ex- Ppenses when on detached service, and also be exempted from conscription. $2: Obituary.
