2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sen, April 5—6 P. M. ‘The share market exhibited weakness this morning, and early all the Western railroads were down. Coupared ‘with the first sales yesterday, Erie Railroad advanced », Erie pre‘erred 3, Illinois Central 2, Cleveland and Toledo %, Pittsburg and Fort Wayne 1%, Chicago and Alton 5, nd Cumberland Coal 2%. Hudson River, Harlem, Chi- ‘cago and Northwestern and Canton Company showed no Variation from the highest cash sales on Monday. New York Central declined , Reading 14%, Milwankee and Prairie du Chien 3, Michigan Central 34, Micbigan Southern 2, Cleveland and Pittsburg 114, Galena and Chi- cago ty, Chicago and Rock Island 13, Alton and Terre Haute 24, Pacific Mail 3;, Quicksilver Mining 214, and Mariposa 1. ‘There was no mate ial change in the afternoon, except in Harlem, which advanced 314 per cent, At the close Frio sold at 125\%, Hudson River 1634%, Harlem 144, Reading 108%, Michigan Southern 115%, Illinois Central 150, Cleveland and Pittsburg 12544, Galena and Chicago 127X, Cleveland and Toledo 154, Chicago and Rock Island 124, and Fort Warne 1483, Exchange was firm to-day at 1813/ @ 181. The loan market continued active at fully seven per cent. The advance in the rate of interest has not been caused by any reduction in the amount of capital offering, bat may be attributed to the increased demand which bas been produced by the eagerness of speculators to hold on to their stocks in anticipation of a further rise, There will probably be no reduction in the present rate until after tho two hundred million loan, which is now being ogotiated, is all taken. The government fixed the price of gold this morning at 1654;—the same as yesterday, The opening price at the exchange was 1673{,and an attempt was made by tho gemblors, as usual, to influenco the official standard; but Mr. Cisco stood firm, and very judiciously resolved, in the absence of orders from Washington, not to give way to the importunities of the speculators. The opening price at the gold room was merely nomival, as probably ‘pot ten thousand dollars in casb sales were perfected be- fore the hour at which the official price was announced. ‘The premium was afterwards forced up to 168%; but no business could bo dono at that price, and the gambling ‘was a'torwards carried on at the lesser fractions. The following is the report of the transactions at the office of the Assistant Treasurer:— Receipts from customs $383,000 Total recoipts 3,658,504 Payments. 4.279'825 Balance... 37,845,396 The subscriptions to the ten-| forty toan at the Sub Treasury to-day amounted to $168,850, and at the First National Bauk to $409,000. The aggrogate value of the exports of produce and merchandise from this port during the past week was $5 .766,748 The plan of confining the designations of the national Danks to numbers instead of allowing thom to choose their own names has, it appears, been abandoned. The “National Exchange Bauk,’’ of New York, aud the ‘Dela. ware County National Bank,’ of Chester, Penns: have been authorized and will proceed to do b: accordance with the provisions of tho law, under their respective titles. We have received a copy of the following despatch, dated Lowvonworth, Kansas, April 4:— To General J. C. The arrivals continue below the average wants of legal tender or reserve; the amount due from banks the same, he doepoeits the eame, and the cir- culation scarcely avythivg else; and all these are on the increase. The only item that is not paper is specie, and that is on the decroase, The banks, it will be seen, on $12.899,050 of capital; hold of loans $37,262,820, or nearly three to one, besides various otber interest-bearing se- curities, probably enough to swell the ratio of loans to capital to three aud a balf or four to one, Such a super structure on such a base, with few or no losses, must profit largely to the owners of the banka.
