SPREMRPO TOME Oe ‘The great Metropolitan Sanitary Fair of the tmperiat city of New York will be opened this eveniog, im the splondid halls provided for the occasion, mm the mest sumptuous and magnificent style, For along Gime past no such worthy popular event hag been celebrated in the Empire City—an event in which the hearts of the poople throughout the land beat in univen and traly patriotic sywpathy, and one which, from its high importance, has called forth a proclamation from the Chief Magistrate (eclaring the opening day an oceasion to be Ybserved by tho peoplo as a general hellday, We rive below a full and faithful aczount of the inception and development of the Great Fair ap two ite opening to the public to-night, with a collectfon of most valuable infor- mation, obtained by our reporters at much pains and with mors thao ordinary difficulty, The diagrams which accompany our report are the most perfect that caa be made, They show the exact location of every depart- ment and section of the’bullding, with the fullest expla- pation for persons visiting the exhibition, Fer the valuable information which we are thus enabled to” supply we have vobdody to thank but the excelient ladies who superinteud the various stands as a work of love amd oharity towards our soldiers in the field and these who have been maimed and injured im faithfully serving the re- public, The men, who assume to have the most authority in the management ef the undertaking, are entitled to little or no consideration, so far an the thanks of the public are conecrned, The preas was warmly invited im their circular letter to attend and aid in the work in which all loyal citizens are interested; but in responding to this cordial invitation their representatives were alm/ey everywhere repulsed and rofused information--the amiable ladies of the different committees forming tho sole excep- tions. In their Digh-sounding eirculars these men say :— “We ask the prose to give it (theobject of the Fair) the widest pablicity and the most earnest encouragement.’? This we will assuredly do; but wo must at the same time remonstrate strongly against all attempts to qheek the usefulness of tho press after their warm polieltations to obtain its power and influence. . THE OPENING TO-NIGHT will bo @ resplendent affair. In our full report of the interior decorations, a perfect idea will be formed of the building itself, and of the wonders of skill, art, beanty and magnificence which have beem lavished upon it. Such sight is ecarcoly over repeated io half acentury. ~ EXTERIOR OF THE BUILDING. The building extends front east to west along Four- teenth street fora distance of over two hundred feet, and covers the whole space between Fourteonth and Fi. teenth streets. Owing to the temporary purposes for which it was ereeted, no regularity of appearance could be observed in its construction. It is conse. quently of a plain, substantial, but unorpamental character—rough wMhout, but within presenting s scene of fairylike magnificence avd splendor, Tie sidewalk bas been covered with a frame building about twenty-five feet high. In front of thie structare @ sidewalk of planks has been laid down for the accommodation of pedes- trians. Along the edge of the plank walk about a dozea gaslamnps are placed, which, during the eontinuages of the Fair, will light up that portion of Fourteeath street, There are three entrances to tho building. The main one is at the east end, facing Sixth avenue, over which, ia large black letters, ts painted NEW YORK SANITARY - FAIR. vor einer rae ———"F There are two entrances fronting on Fourteenth street. Une Is in tho centre of the buliding, and the other at the west end, which, we understand, is for season ticket holders exclusively. At the east end of the buliding isa swall office, where all orders in relation to conehes are to be left, ch THE TEMPLE OF FLORA. Plowers, Mirrors, Vases and Evergreens, The Temple of Flora occupies the centre of the principal building, and right in front of the orchestra gallery. 1b jaa very tasteful structure, and will be an object of ee Pecial attraction during the hokting of the Fair. It is of elUptica! form, sume thirty-five fect in length aud twenty- eight in diameter. The symmetrical pillars are wreathed with flowers and moss and evergreens, while flowers of every hue and name ere again trained up on spiral wroaths, blouding most tastefully with the darker trecery of the colimns, [he show-eounters stand about three foot from the grownd and are handsomely panelled, the Ama- rican shield being the only ornament within the panei. ing.
