The Chamber would be acti ignified part if is received this letter and made itself the medium Of its publicity. He was glad, notwithstanding, that the Secretary bad awakened the matter, He thivke he can got speed out of bis vessels, but for bis (Mr. Grippeli’s) part he did not believe it. Mr. Buowt—if the gentioman had read tbe Tritune of ‘his morning he would bave a different opinion on the Subject. Mr. Gwuxweur—I never read the Tribune, gir. (Laugh- wer.) Mr. Low thought it better to Jet thd matter stand as it was. The remarks of the geptiemen were not just to the navy. For one he was not willing to believo that the majority of the government vessels were not much faster than was generally supposed. So much bad been said in tha; Chamber with regard to the characier of government vessels in times past when the gentleman (Sir. Grione!!) Was not present that he thought there was sutficient justification for the reading of the letter, It certainly came from a high source, and to exclude gucb a lotier ‘would be nighly diecourteous and improper. Mr. Gruner. would bave beep giad to be present when whe vavy was the subject of comment in that Chamber for be wae at all times auxious to exprese bis feelings with regard to it very frankly, a every citizen hed a right to 90; but, ioasmuch as the subject was now up, be would that the Chamber would be wanting io dignity to itseil st became the medium of presenting thie chalienge of the Secretary to the public. COURTESIES BRTWSEN OFVIOERS—A CASB FROM BROGKLYN—A CASS OF HARD SWEARING FROM THE YIVTH—OPFICES @ILDBR, OP THES 6BVENTERENTH, ON PILLS—O’CONNOR AND @AILLARD, OF THE NIRBTEENTH—A OAGE OP DIAMOND CUT DIAMOND— OFFICER BACH 18 CHARGED With VOLLUDING WITH 4 PRISONER, BUT SHOWS HIS INNOCENCS, BTU. ‘The trials at Police Headquarters for the past week have ‘Deen numerous, but not important, The slight demorali- zation traceable among a few of the members of the force about the time of Governor Seymour's action in regard to: the Commissioners Res passed away, ‘and al) is again working a8 smoothly as before, ‘Tho first case of any importance was that of officer Riggs, of the Forty-ninth precinct, Brooklyn, who was complained of by officer Jobnson, of the Forty-first pre- cinct, for not assisting him to take @ prisoner to his sta- tion house, It appears that Jobngon arrested a prisoner, Dut, Deing unable to get bim to the Forty-fret precinet station house, which was one and a baif miles away, sent for help te the Forty ninth, which was clese at band, ‘Upon Riggs arriving on the ground he proposed to take ‘the Prisoaer to the nearest station. Johnson insisted on taking bim to the furthest ome, that being the one to which he was attached. Some words passed between the officers, duriag which, as Jobnson claime, Riggs gave Biro the lie. It appeared on the evidence of Sergeaut Cornell, however, that the complainant, Johnson, was mach more to Diame than the defendant Riggs, wherewpoa President Acton took occasion to lectnre them both upon she cour- teises that always onght to oxist between the members of the force, and with thjs gentle reprimand ihe -case was dismissed. ‘The old case of O’Brien ve. Sergeant Lockwood, of the Fifth, was reoptoed, bat with similar resuiis 10 those mentioned in lass Sunday’s Fieratp, It wil bo remom ered that Sergeant Lockwood swore poritively that O’Brien was in an office on the Erie Railroad pier, fast asleep by a comfortable fire, and that O'brien swore equally positive that it wae no such thing Theee oaths wore repeated again with still greater vehemeuce, O’Brien stating that he believed the Sergeant bad por- Jured himself, The Sergeant's well koown obaracter for veracity and truth rendered tho statement of O’Brien an absurdity, and it will certainly recoil upon tho latter, who could not possibly have meaut what ho eald. ‘The case of officer Gilder, of tho Seventeenth, was one provocative of humor. Dr. Mott, police surgeon, was tho complainant in thie case. and stated that Gilder camo to his house and reporded wick: that he sent him word to grait about five mioutes and ho would be down; that Gilder did not wait, but loft his card with the servant and went away, The Doctor then called at (ilder’s house, but found him out, He accordingly loft a note for ima tO report unmedjately for duty. Instead of doing £0 he reported sick again the next day. Ag he did not ap pear tick ho wag again ordered on duty, aud the doctor entered campiaint against him. Gilder, upon being al- lowed to speak, said he was really sick, aud a‘ter going to the doctor’s house could not wait five miuctes for tbe doctor to come down. Upon being asked why ho could not wait, he ¢aid he took eight pills the n ght previous, oct just ag be reached the doctor’s he began {o feel very ugly about the abdomen, He consequently otrack a bee Jine for big house. The doctor aeked him if he did not think it would have been easier to have stepped into bis water closet. Gildersaid be didn’t think of that, and Preeident Acton observed that any man who could run four blocks with eight pills in bie stomach must bave a constitution of extraordinary vigor, but which, he thought, might be improved by a close adherence t0 ico water. Decision in the case was reserved. Roundeman O'Connor, of the Nineteenth precinct, was caught navi Oe by officers Gaillard and Green, of the same Precinct. Gail wo feel very well over his victory, Pic ay ‘ag the roondaman on @ former occasion bad got the best ofhim. Gaillard and Green were in o coffes saloon, dressed as private citizens, but were on duty, vatching some thieves. While there O'Connor cam! and enjoyed the substantial edibles of the place, be bewg ip full uniform and on duty. O’Oonnor claimed that ho was called in to take out an unfortunate girl who was there; but it was shown tbat this was just after ne had taken his The case was @ little ow the diamond cut diamond order. Some time since O'Connor complained agaist Gaillard for entering his (Gaillard’s) house vie on duty and rerasining there some three hours. Jt appoared that the roundsman bad posted himself where he could peek through & xpothole or other small aperature and watch Gajilard. The latter conscicus of the roundsman’s ingenuity, and accord- y elipped out of the back way and reached bie post circuitous route, leaving the roundeman on watch for about three hours. Gatlidrd war conquered in this case, but bas ever since been lookjug for the rounds man, whom be succeeds in getting on track of at last. Officer Bach, Acting Sergeant of the Forty-seventh precinct, was charged with baving colluded with a pris oner—one Patrick Fiangan. Capt Davis state? that bach arrested the prisoner at the roqueet of Mr. Peter Kabbel. who charged that Patrick bad passed upou him a five doliar counterfeit bill on the New York County Bank; that he ordered Bach to take the prisoner to court the next morning and notify the compiaintant aleo to appear, Dut that be observed some parties come Into tho station house and taik with Bach sbout the and that while the latter was taken to court the rning the complainant was not notified, and consequently did uot ap- arged, Bach that he did fy bin the night prev.out, bet that Kathe! would not £0, as be did not deem it vecessary; but ead afterwards be would go upon an order from the Judge. The Judge, who was present, said Bach Drought the prisoner before him and explained all the circumstances in the case; but as no complainant appeared, and the other evidence was insufficient to hold the prisoner, he discharged him From all the evidence t did not appear u tach had io any way colluded with the prisoner; bat until the cir- comatances were all explained thoy looked very sus- pious, and the captain was commended for baving caused the case to be Joves: The other cases were wu important, and the Poard ac- journed unti I Tuesday neXt, at eleven 0 clock The mai js for New , Orleans. The coupons attached to the new interest-bear- ing legal tender Treasury notes are payable ouly when presented connected with the note. [f the coupon is detached it becomes worthless, except when taken from the note in the presence of a designated officer of the government.
