In cases of dyspepsia, emaciation and debility, an iacreased nutrition of the body is the result of ite employment. The patient re covers flesh, strength and color; hitherto pale, relaxed and feeble, he becomes full, strong and florid. Jodine Water i put up in sixteen ounce ginke stoppered bottles, with full directions around each bottle, that it may be used as a family medicine, as well as by the profession. TO THE PRACTITIONER we would pay, the uniform strength of lodine Wa- ter may be relied upon as containing % grains Jodine in each fluid ounce of pure water. Itis not tiable to decomposition nor spontancously formed inequalities, neither is the Iodine neutral- | ized by combination with any ingredient. The dose may be regulated according to desire, with the certainty of sucb reeults as be may anticipate, while no unpleasant or injurions censequences willanee from its continued ose, rendering this solution superior to apy other method in which Jodine can be exhibited. Ever since Jodine was firet used in medicine the ; aim of chemists and pbyticians has been to intro- )-duce itip ite pore state into the system; but on account of its ineolubility in water (requiring | 7,000 times ste own weight of watcr to dissolve it) it hae been prescribed in a compound form, ren- dering it impossible to regulate the dose, or an- i ticipate its effects upon the system, In 184 Dr. Henry Anders (the senior partner of our firm, and & member of the medical Faculty of this city), after fifteen years of labor and experiment, dis- covered ® chemical procese which enabled him to dissolve lodine in pure water, without a eolvent. This, considered impossible by the scientific world, ip attested by certificates of analysis from Dr. James R. Chilton, of this city, and Professor J.C. Booth, United States Mint, Philadelphia, and the importance of this discovery was so highly appreciated by the Faculty that it wae publiehed ip the medica) journals, and recommended to prac- titioners. (See beow). The action of Iodine upon the Human Syserem has engaged the attention of some of the most ecientife minds of the age, and the amount of ability, cal, and assiduity which bas been devot- ed to the elucidation of ite effects has not been ex- ceeded ip the instance of any other article in Hateria Medica. Yet to the genera) reader very little ie Known of thie peculiar eubstance. That the public may be enlightened as to the Batore and uees of Iodine, and be led to appreciate the benefit to be derived from thie discovery, an outiine of ite history ie herewith sibjeined. Jodine ip a non-metallic, elementary body. It exists in certain marine vegetables, particularly the foci, or common seaweed; in some fresh water plants, among which are the water-cress brooklime, and fine-leaved water-hemlock; in the animal kingdom, in the sponge, oyster, various polypi, ete. It is also found in the mineral kingdom, in certain salt springs, in a rare Mexi- can mineral combined with silver, and in the sinc ore of Silesia; aleo in various mineral aprings jn thie country and in Europe, highly esteemed for te Medicinal properties; and it may safely be 8010 thet ail the Lenot derived from drinking the water of the Congres# and Saratoga waters, the Saltz of Piedmont, King’s Well at Bath, &o., is owing to the [odine which they contain. 'The various species of fucus and ulva thrown by the wavee of the Atlantic ocean on the coasts | of Scotland (the Hebrides and Orkney Islands), | Ireland, Guernsey and Brittany contain the largest | qoantitice of thie valuable element—the richest | weed yielding from eight to fourteen pounds per | ton, while the poorest realize no more than tour | or five pounds inthe same amount. These sea weeds, having been gathered, are burned at a low temperature, producing a dark colored vitreous | maes called Kelp, from whieh the rough iodine of commerce is obtained. This, having undergone the process of resublimation, produces iodine chemically pure, and is the article we use. Iodine was accidentally diecovered in the year 1812, chemical experiment & boda man turer of Paris. Dr. Alexander Manson, of St. Mary’s Hospital, Nottingham, Eogland, in his highly interesting werk on ‘The Effects of Iodine,” uses this lan- guage:—''My attention had for some time been directed to discover the active matter in burnt sponge that proves remedial in Bronchocele (scrofulous affections of the glands of the neck), when I learnt through the’‘medium of the London medical journals that Dr. Coindet had employed Jodine in the cure of Goitre with very great suc: cess, J immediately obtained a supply of this sub- stance, and experience very soon convinced me of its superior powers over burnt sponge in the cure of that disease. When employed in administering Jodine in the cure of Bronchocele! was so fortunate as to discover several new*facts, and partly*from these and partly from analogy I was induced to extend,"the employment of this medicine to the cure of other diseases, viz:—Bronchocele or Goitre, Paralysis, Chorea or St. Vitus’ Dance, Screfula, Serofulous Ophthalmia, Deafness, Diss- phagia, White Swellings and Distortion of the Spine. I have recommended the treatment by iogine in these cases, not from caprice or fondness for novelty, but because I fonnd it much more effi- cacions than any other method with which J am acquainted, * * * I have treated upward of eighty cases of Scrofula and Scrofulous Ophthal- mia with iodine, and in a very large proportion of the cases, when the medicine was persevered in, the disease was either cured or the general health and Jocal disease very much ameliorated. Iam not without hopes that in Iodine we possess a remedy that bids fairer than any other to prevent the formation of tubercles (in the lungs), or to dissipate them in their incipient state. But, with respect to the efficacy of Iodine in Scrofula and Berofulous Ophthalmia, I] think my experience warrants me in pronouncing it to be, by far, the most powerful and energetic medicine that I have employed in the cure of these diseases.” Dr. Charles Cogswell, of Edinburg, remarks:— “As Todine acts so powerfully on the digestive tube, it should also affect the urinary organs; many of the members decidedly experienced these secondary effects. Moreover, since Iodine acts not only upon the surface of the intestines, but algo on that of the parte which open into them, on the glands of the mouth and stomach, it should in- crease the salivary, gastric, pancreatic and bviary secretions, It must, therefore, modify in a high degree the processes of assimilation and nutrition if properly employed. Should we not expect the best effects from it in diseases of the viscera, depending upon weakness and a con- gested state of these organs, in scrofula and simi- lar affections’? He further says:—‘Though p powerful agent, it usually ‘acquires ite sway by slow and obscure approaches.” “It has been proved by Dr. Buchanan, of Glas- gow, Cantu, and othere, that Iodine enters into a number of the secretions, and it has been detected in the urine, sweat, milk and blood; but it does notaccumulate in the system, as was proven by Drs. Mansop, Becquerel and Dalton.’” “Todine has the power of dissolving mercury and lead, and the presence of organic matter does not prevent these changes. It dissolves metallic mer- cury, and all the mercurial) compounds which can possibly occur in the living body. Meleens is of the opinion that Jodine acts curatively in these cases, by diseolving the fixed union existing be- tween the metal and the organic tissues, and by forming a eoluble compound, which passes off by the kidneys. Dr. Seguin, a French physician, praizes its effects in obstinate intermittents which have resisted quinine. Dr. Lugo mentions in- stances, among his scrofulouspatients. in which it cured obstructed and painful menstruations. It has been affirmed, in the London Lancet, that in cases of suppressed measles and scarlatina it will frequently induce ® healthy reaction under the most desperate circumstances. “The ue of lodine in Neuralgia has been of the utmost benefit. A patient whose life had ‘been embittered for five years with neuropathic mala- dies, and who suffered at the time from a very painful affection of the head and neck, with occa- sional and frequent pain of the arms and legs, was speedily relieved, and within six weeks complete- ly cured, after arsenic, mercury and most of the narcotics had been prescribed in vain. In differ- ent forms of Rheumatism, Jodine has been given with the preatest snecess. When Rheumatism as- sumes a chronic form, or if there should exista strumous or syphilitic taint, no remedy is equal to Todine. In glandular enlargements and morbid growth the power of Iodine is highly estcomed. In induration and enlargement of the liver or spleen, where mereury has failed or is inadmissi- ble. Todine forms the best recourse Dr. Horace Green, President of the New York Medical College, is of the opinion’that an increased nutrition of the body, or embonpoint, is the result of the employment of Iodine. He further says, in the administration of Iodine in follicular diseases, “T have found almost invariably a specific effect produced upon the organs of secretion by the use of the medicine, and equally salutary are the effects produced ordinarily on the digestive org most intere been accomplished by tl indebted to the eminent Paris, for the most extended a searches in the use of Todine in the different forms of Scrofula. The great success which has attended the use of Jodine Water in our own practice, and in the hands of those who have used it, enables us to recom- mend it to the practitioner and the public as a su- perior remedy for the cure of chronic diseases, which have resisted other treatment, feeling con- fident that with @ fair trial it will attest ite own excellence, DR. H. ANDERS’ Iodine Liniment For External Use, for the Allaying of Inflammation, the Reduction of Tumors and Sprains, and the Alleviation of Pain. As it ie the nature of many diseases that, while they yield either to an internal or to an external treatment, when both are combined more speedy results: are frequently obtained, we were led to prepare this Liniment, to be used in connection with Iodine Water, that while Iodine Water at- tacks the citadel of disease, the Liniment will excite the exhalants of the skin to remove the existing morbid secretions. The evidence of the success of these remedies and the facts enumerated above we will be le ased to show to any who will call at our office. DR. H. I have analyzed the “IODINE WATER” pre- pared by Dr. Anders, and find itto be a sdlution of pure Iodine in water. It has long been a de- sideratum to prepare Jodine go that it can be ad- ministered in its uncombined etate; this prepara- tion by Dr. Anders enables ns to effect that object. Each fluid ounce of the Water contains about half a grain of Iodine. I consider it a valuable pre- paration, and one which will prove serviceable in all those casee where the uso of Jodine is indicated, JAMES R. CHILTON, M. D., Chemist. New Yonrg, May 22, 1856. D., late Professor of Anatomy in the New York Medical College:— Topins Warer.—Samples of ja preparation with this name have been sent to us by Dr. Anders, of this city, by whom it is prepared. Chemists gen- erally state that Jodine can be dissolved in water, but that the’solution is a very weak one, contain- ing in fact only 1.7000 part of Iodine by weight. Dr. Anders states that this is only a simple eolu- tion in Croton water, and may be made as strong as three-quarters of a grainto the ounce. The preparation is a decidedly brown fluid, with a strong smell and taste of Iodine. When allowed to stand inan open vessel the color and taste both | disappear, the remainder being simply limpid wa- ter. We have seen acopy of the report of an analy- sia made by Dr. Chilton, in which he states that he finds it ‘to be a solution of pure Iodine in water.” It is a question of interest, by no means unworthy of investigation, what may befthe therapeutical value of this preparation. If we can inthis way introduce pure Iodine into the system, without combination with any other substance, important results may follow. Practitioners should remem- ber this solution when prescribing Iodine. The Bible Examiner for August, 1863, edited by the Rev. George Storrs, contains the following no- tice:— Topixg Warter.—In this number of our mag- azine we introduce to the attention of our readers this medical preparation. For the past three years he has had an open sore of hia breast, and latterly one near his collar bone, with ulceration in his throat, that was rapidly increasing, so that dissolution appeared inevitable. In this condition he applied to Dr. Anders & Co. By the use of the Iodine Water the ulceration in his throat disap- peared in a short time. Continuing its use, in Jess than two months he was apparently healed, and his general health much proved. This son, whom I had feared wou!d fall asleep in death before this summer should close, is now, appa- rently, io a fair way to recover as perfect health as is common to our mortal etate.
