Now the whole course of the cotton trade of England, imports a» well ay exports, has changed, and operates materially to her disadvantage. She must look to India for her raw material, which, when it reaches her factories, has quadrupled in cost. She cannot return a manu faotured article in payment, except some fabrics of inferior quality, upon which very little profit | made, and consequently nothing but gold will re- compense the producers. England begins vow to feel the effects of this change, and the disarrange- h fotlows a scarcity of specie is looming up in'prospective and measurably ex- citing their fears. When the rebellion broke out the people of England exulted over our misfor- tunes, never for a moment supposing that their ap- parently seoure position in monetary afluirs could be disturbed by any movements in this country. But now we imagine, as they see their stock of bullion diminishing at the rate of nearly two hun- dred millions of dollars annually, they begin to look around for a cause, and by this time, we think, they have found it, in a great measure, in the single fact herein stated.
