Dr. Swann, Medical Inspeetor of the Sanitary Commis- sion, left Wosbivgton to-night on a tour of inspection of the ‘hospitals at Harper’s Ferry, Frederick City, aud elsewhere in Maryland. The Hon, ayhuyler Cofax, the mewly elected Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, was born in this city on the 23d uf March, 1823, He is a descendant of Gener puyler and Captain Colfax, both of Revolu: tionary fame. At tho age of thirteen he removed into Indiana, where ho travelled much with the Hon. Mr, Lane during,lis political canvass, and where be jearned the trade of a printer. A widow's son, a poor boy, he educated himself for a life of labor, and made up for his lack of collegiate tuition by his pereeverance and courage, About the year 18435 he became the proprictor of a newspaper known ag the South Bend Register, and after a short ime was somewhat popular as an editor, In com nection with bis profession he-took @ very active part in the politics of Indiana, and in 1843 was appointed a dele- gate to tho Whig National Convention of that year, Dur- ing 1650 he was a momber of the Indiaua Constitutional Convention, and in 1862 was again selected as a delegate to the Whig Nations!
