Government Contracts, SUPERIOR COURT—SPECIAL TERM. Before Chief Justice Bosworth. Dro, 2.—Towes vs. Perrine and others.—This was o motion on behalf of the plaintiff to continue an injunction against the de endants (among whom are the contractors S:cor & Co), restraining the collection of money due them by the government as builders of tho iron clad Man- hattan. The fucts, as appeared from the argument, are that Porrine & Secor & Co. wore joint contractors in build- ing the Maphattan, and tho plaintiff claims a half interest in Perrine s sbare, under an arrangement existing be- tween them, estimating bis portion of the profits to be $15,000. Counsel for Perrine contends that such ar- Tangement was dissolved before this contract was award. ed, aud, together with the other defendants, devied that plaintiff was entitled to any portion of the profits, or was In avy degree interested therein. ‘The aifidavite read be- fore the Court were voluminous, and showed tho man- ner in which government contracts are put through, Decision reserved. Counsel for the plaintiff, Messrs. Mar- tin and Smith, For defendante, Messrs. W. 'D. Booth and R. Hasbrouck. i ERED FINANC'AL AND COMMERCIAL. Wepnespay, Dec. 2—6 P. M. Stocks at the first board to-day took another turn towards the bottom, and the bears were, as usual, in exultation over the speedy approach of their promised millennium. Many are trying to force the conviction upon themselves as well as others that the downward progress has about reached the point where a reaction muet take place; but when the fact is taken into considera- tion that a large majority of the stock that enters tutu che daily sales is yet gicatly above ite real value, no argument can be adduced to satisfy a reasoning mind that inflated prices can stand for any great length of time. In the absence of news from the army or. by reports of temporary checks to the progress of our arms the share market may and will fluctuate; but the dead weight of the cer- tainty that the rebellion is in its last throes will as surely bring down stocks to their proper standard as that revulsion succeeds an overburdened mar- ket. There was cons derable excitement in New York Central and Erie Railroad shares, the former selling at 138 for cash and 133, seller ten days, the difference being caused by the fact that the books close on Friday next, and the election for directors will take place on Tuesday. Harlem declined 1%, Hudson River 14% and Reading 1. Prices at the half-past three o’clock board were steady at the decline of the afternoon, and in the street at five o’clock the market was more firm at the following quota tions: — York Central. re. Pittaburg and Fort Wayn Chicago and Reck Island. Michigan Southern. Reading...... Canton Compan; Governments are firm, coupon five-twentics being held at 10054 a 10034, and seven-thirty Trea sury notes are 106% a 106%. The speculators in gold entered the market this morning with the determination to advance prices, and opened the game at 149%—nearly one up from the closing sales of last evening; but they miscalculated the amount that might be offered, and the rash of sellers was too great for the open- ing figure, and prices in consequence immediately fell. Towards noon another spasmodic effort was made to put up the value; but that, like the first, failed to stand the willingness of sellers to dispose of their surplus. In the afternoon the price was for the third time run up, and the market closed weak at 14994. The following were the quotations during the da; 9 o'clock A. The New York Central Railroad war progresse charming!y, and has now resolved itee!f into a re gular political campaiga over the election of anew Board of Directore, The bulla end the bears of Wall street, heartily disgusted at the aspect which the battle has assumed, have withdrawn from the contest, and left the leader@ and the leading jour- nals of both political parties 0 occupy the arena andtocarry on the conflict im a purely partican style. The catine of the diffcnity a. the basin of the war may be found inthe fe lowing “eur lines: Brasius Corning, democrat, President, Dean Richmond, democrat, Vice President. John V. L. Pruya, "Gthosbhe Pronsurer, Chauncey Vibbard, demegpat, Superintendent. —The repubiicans immagive that the managers of the road are in a poxitiowto exercise a large politi- ca! iafueace, and when parties are wearly equal in strength the polities of the State may be for the time under the control of the persons oceapying the above named positions; and from @ eonvic- tien of these facts arises the attempt they are now making to place the management of the road in the hands ef their partisan friends, ‘The election Yor directors will’ take place on the 8th instant, and the fellowing named gentlemen, or rather the requisite number of them, will be voted for by the republican er opposition party:— At the head of the list stands Dean Richmend, of Buttalo. He is a leader of the demceratié par- ty of this State, Chairman of the Democratic State Committee, and present Vice President of the road. His name is probably placed first on the list. of candidates to cover the designs of the re- publican wire pullers. Next comes Eben G, Spaulding, of Buffalo, a re- publican member of the last Congress, and Chair- manof the Committee of Ways and Means in the House of Representatives. He was a candidate for re-election in 1862, and was defeated, Col. Peter A. Porter, of Niagara, now in the ar- my. He was nominated by the republicans for Secretary of State, but declined to be a candidate. Freeman Clark, of Rochester, is the republican member of Congress elect in the Twenty-eighth district. He positively declines to ran for direc- tor. Thomas Hillhonse, of Geneva, republican. Was Governor Morgan’s Adjutant General, Gen. E. W. Leavenworth, republican, of Syra- cuse. Has frequently presided over republican State conventions, and wasa delegate to the Chi- cago National Convention that nominated Mr. Lin- ooln for the Presidency. F. B. Fitch, of Syracuse, is also named; but as he does not probably hold a sufficient number of shares to qualify him, the name of Thomas T. Da- vis, of the same place, will be substituted. Russell Sage, republican, of Troy. He was for- merly a director, but was turned out in conse- quence of his being interested in Western roads. Thomas W. Olcott, one of the republican leaders of Albany county. He ran for Congress, and was defeated, first by Erastus Corning, who eubsequent- ly resigned, and then by John V. L. Pruyn, and he will most:likely be defeated again by the same men in the present contest. Rufus H. King, @ republican politician of Al- bany. William Kelly, of Dutchess county. He was the democratic candidate for Governor in 1860, against Edwin D. Morgan. If elected a director he would represent the interest of the Hudson River road. Cornelius Vanderbilt. The name of Mr. Van- derbilt is placed upon the list as a blind, The op- position do not desire his election, neither will they vote for him. The other names are Chester W. Chapin, of Springfield, Massachusettes; C. H. Russell and Thomas Tileston, of New York, and William F. Weld, J. B. Forbes and Nathaniel Thayer, of Boston.
