The Richmond Whig of Nov. 30th, in speaking of Gen. Meade’s late advance, says the rumors of his advance created the most in- tense excitement, and says: «The enemy in large numberé, estimated at about three corps, crossed the Rapidan Tnurs- day and Friaay a‘ Mitchell's, Germanna, Gold Mine and other fords, threw up intrenchments and commenced advancing from the river in three allel columns. About half-past two o'clock Fridsy afternoon their right-wing, oon- sisting of French's ccrps, advanced in a north- easterly direction, with the intention of flank- ing and cutting off Johnson’s division of Ewell'’s corps, and his wagon train, which, it will be seen, Was unsucceésfol, and most sig: de- feated.. Gen. Johnson was advancingtowards the river at the time, and when within about one and @ halt miles of the river the enemy opened fireand began afuriousattack. Ourmen promptly and gallantly responded, and after bard fighting repuleed the enemy and drove them back within their intrenchments. The fight stili continued, and the Yankees were several times driven from their fortitications, wntil night came on, and darkness pnt an end to the conflict. “The loss of the enemy, as far as could be as. certained, was heavy, including a number of prisoners, which could not be ascertained with precision by wounded officers who left the field at night. Our loss is estimated at trom three to jour hundred killed and wounded, withcut @man taken prisoner. The enemy did pee succeed in capturing a single Wagon or ores. ‘Atthe time of the enemy's advance, thei: right Is believed to have rested on Glovineies Ford, and their extreme left Wing at or near Chaneellorsville. The fight occurredin a fair, open tiela, trom which-the: enemy was driven, and 1s represented to have been desperate in the extrrme, , vision that 3! engaged thenune brigades Bf the je entmy were the 2d ( Va.) brigade, Jones; Suiford 5 oniiacn brigade, the Store- wall brigace, General Walker, and the 3d DE gacepanmanded by Gen. Treating of the defeat of Bragg, the iFAig the 30th says the magni! ude of the def at is lescened by the details, and thinks «the d-fex waa little short of @ rout, and it is Probably daw to the failure of the enemy to pursue, that i: lnchs apy feature of the most deplorable catam.- ity tat can befal an «army. It is far from Pleasant to have to confess that the largest army we have owes its satety to ihe want of enterprise in the enemy; but in this case we may do so without disparaging the courage too many fi Ide to be doubled. A more fatal want thin that of courage—want of confidence in their com- mpander—uunerved and paralyzed that army.’* “ Butthe safety of the remnant of Bragg’s army is cniy temporary; unless the command is immediately changed, and reinforcements Gre renttoitsrelief. The least avoidable delay in the first ot these steps is a crimiual trifling Wilh interests as important as were ever com - mitted totLe keeping of mortalman. If we are no: misled by information that no one would be apt to diecredit, the army now under (ien. Bragg, discontented almost to mutiny before the Jate disaster, cannot be kept tegether under bis leadership.” And the Whig argues that it is the duty of the commander-in-chief to remove Bragg at once, and to reinforce the Army of the Chickamanga. 1n a postscript to this article the Whig cays: “Later information raises a doubt as to the Recuracy of the statement that the enemy are not pursuing. Grant is saidtobe following up his victory with characteristic energy, despite the Joss of “twenty thousend” Mmen—a canard which, 38 the reader will Perceive, comes from Atlenta, the headquarters of the Press Ass0- cintion.”” The Augusta (Ga.) Constitutionalist says the defeat of Bragg has brought the crisis Upon the Vontederacy and «the people of Georgia must urouse themselves to the stern requirements of the occation, and be prepared to meet the over. whelming torces of the invader by contest: every inch of our soil, and defending our hear! Stones from polluting presence of the accursed crew who are now endeavering to deprive us of our birthright, and force upon our Peoples government more odions and degrading than the worst species of African bondage,” The Missionary Ridge correspondent of the Richmond Dispatch describes the situation of the rebels after the battle of the 24th as follows: It is pow well ascertained that Sherman has not gone to the relief of Burnside, as was fully .tehieved a few days age: but the whole Federal ariny is here marshalling for our. destraction. Perhaps Grant bas concluded that he could best succor Burnside by forcing Bragg toratire. I have justheard that our comnmunications with Knoxville have been cut, probably by the Federal cavalry that crossed the river above this afternoon, and that the dey t buildings at Joynere’s Station, on the Chattanooga and Fast Tennessee road have been burnt. Nov. 25th—2 a. m.—Finding that he could net withdraw his army in time Gereral has given orders to mass his whole available force on the right. A battle may be expected to.day. The situation is critical. Savxver, The Richmond Fzaminer isin great @gony on Account Of the position of Longstreet in East Tenneseee, und while it is pleased to know that Knoxville is invested, yet the long delay in concluding the ciege, and the fact that they do not know what amount of provision Burnside may have, is @ source of great trouble. The Exominer fears that Grant, now that he “has liited Bragg from his front, ma: prefer sending & part of his army to relieve Burnside to an advance upon the Contederate line ol the Chickamauga. These are reflections which trouble the pleasure with which the public pe- ruses the cheertul telegram from East Tennes- see. But they may be relieved at any moment by an authoritative statement of Barnside’s surrender. Meantime we can gee little ground for apprehending a disaster in that quarter. Ir the Federal forces at Chattanooga moved on Longstreet, he would not waitto be enveloped; and & safe retreat into Virginia or North Caro- ina is always open to him.” The Petersburg Xzpress of November 30 has unpleasant rumore from North Oarolina. It says: « The Ralegh Progress learns from a gentie- man who came trom Goldsboro’ Friday, that a rumor prevailed there that a portien, > one-half, ot Captain White’s company, Colone.
