Gold rose to-day to 144%, and exchango to 15744 @ 158 for first class bankers’ bills. At the close gold was 142% and billa 156% s sudden advance of 4.45 per cent in gokl has been a wabject of considerable woudertaent in the street, as nothing has transpired cither in the y. Sep AoaKY ors, in the military news or in the course of trade to justify | peposita. #0 sudden s jump. It may, perhaps, be axstimed | Cuculation.. that the rumors of disaster to the Army of the Cumberland which, though not authenticated, were current in Washington last evening, had a good deal to do with the advance. Should these rumors prove aa baseless aa they are now believed | Sept. be, the price will naturally react, aud may fall below the point at which it stood before the rise. To-morrow the Sub-Trea- surer will disburse some $3,000,000 of gold in pavment of interest on the 7.3) notes, aad on Ist November o further payment of some $6,500,000 wili be made in coin for interest on the five-twenty bonds, Moreover, the advance in gold to 143 will have the effect of increasing to a very large extent our experta of produce, merchandise and stocks, and wil! thus reduce the inquiry for gold for export. Whatever be the course of gold kereafter, there can be no question Pout that am advance of 5 per cent ina day,in the absence of very bad news from the army, must be followed by ® corresponding reaction. Money waa easy to-day at 6 percent for call loans. Some brokers get all they want at 5 per cent, The recent fall in stocks has set at reat for the present the disputes about margins which gave 80 much trouble to houses with limited means when the market was on the last upward wave. The stock market was more active to-day, and the tone at the morning board decidedly buoyant. The advance in gold is again operating to increase purchases of dividend-paying shares. There are many people who object to see their money depre- ciating at the rate of one to five per cent a day, and whe do not see the philosophy of locking it up in gold, which pays no dividends. This cause i+ rendering what may be called the higher class of dividend-paying shares very scarce. Though the price has varied but little, the amount of Michigan Sonthern guaranteed. Michigan Central, Reading, Toledo, &e., available for the speculative purposes of the street is now very small; and the time is not far distant when, like the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati, the Buffulo and State Line, the New Jersey Central, &c., they will be withdrawn from the speculative list altogether. New York Central is likewise affected by the fame influences, though the recent abortive ; bull movement in this stock operates against it for | the time. But nt 134. 155, with gold at 140 a 14%, | New York Central ia about as good a remittance | as can be made to the other side, and it will doubtless be shipped. It sold at 95, in 1861, for | gold, when the company had no surplus on hand, With a surplus now on hand, which reduces the real cost of the stock to 120, itis likely to look cheap if gold rises. At the morning boar to-day Central rose 1, Erie %%, Erie: preferred 1, Hudson 114, Harlem 2, Reading 1, Chicago and Alton pre- ferred 4, Michigan Central 4, Southern old 114, IWinois Central 3, Pittsburg 134, Galena 1, Rock Island 124, Fort Wayne 1, Chicago and Alton 1};. | ie Governments were firm at an advance of */ per | cent, At the close of the first hoard the market was very strong, and everything was wanted at an advance of 44 a4 above the board price. The advance was maintained at the one P. M. call of the public board. At the second board the market was irregular. New York Central and Erie were firm: Michigan Central advanced %, | Chicago and Alton 14, and Illinois Central &%. On the other hand, Harlem fell off 3 per cent, Galena %4, Rock Island 1, and Hudson 34, The market was not active, but the tone was firm. Harlem | dropped more than anything lee, mainly im conse- | | quence of the difficulty of carrying it, few bankers | being willing to lend on it. Nothing further has transpired with regard to the litigation in which | the company isinvolved.
