Se:z+ant Highland, of Peonsylvania, who started Ip pursuit of the plunderers, is said to have ‘beon taken prisoner. Mr. W, Young’s Despatch. Comprrysr, Vi . 24, 1863, The exploits of our cavalry rival the moat brilliant deeds of the most valiant knights of ancient times. The uames of Pleasanton, Buford, Gregg, Kilpatrick, Custer, end other brave cavaliers, will shine resplendent on the pages of history which is daily boing written, Buford’s and Kilpatrick's cavalry divisions, under the general command o the former, went forward fer 1econ- noisyance and to feel the lines of the enemy, and drove in the rebel cayairy pickets about two miles this site of Madison Court House en Monday evening. AGvancing still further, they were met on Tuesday morning by ex rebel cavalry regiments, embracing the Fitst, Second, Fourth rad Fifth North Carolina, and Cobb’s Legion of Georgians, who marched out from Gordousville to give them battle. ‘The enemy charged impetuously on the Third Indiana, of Buford’s First brigade, but was handsomely repulsed and compelled to full back some distance. A lively ‘skirmish ensued, which ended in a more general engage ment during the afternoon, on the Gordonsville piko, about six miles beyond Madison Court Houso. The beaviest part of the ighting was done by Buford’s First brigade, lea by Colones! Chapman, of the Third Indiana, and the four regimonts comprising that brigade hhad the honor of routing and putting to ight the superior numbers of their advorsuries. , Baford's Second brigade, commanded by Colonel Diven, of the Sixth Now York, with Battery A, Second United States artillery, held the extreme left, and shelled one of the enemy’s trains white it was crossing Barnott’s Ford, ‘Dut did not succsed in its captore or destruction, tueugn ‘they did capture several prisoners, among them seven rebels intended for recruits to Mosby. Three of these ‘were lately on Genera! I'ryor’s stafl, and attracted much attention when brought into Culpepper by the elegance of their uniforms. General Kilpatrick, on the right, executed a flank Movement, and threw two squadrons of the Harris Light Cavalry upon the rear of the enemy. ‘Ihe imme- diato result was that the Harris Light Cavalry was Tepulaod and iost their led horses; but they subsequently rallied, and with their supports captured fifteen rebes and recaptured thir horses. Kilpatrick also captured Gixteon wagons, comtaming a large supply of sugar cared hams, sweet potatves, crockery and chinawarc, tobacco, and a quantity of sutier’s goods, After the rebel lino was broken they fell back rapidly and in disorder, and did not venture to make snother stand this side of the Kapiian. Battery D, Second United States regulars, dismounted ‘One piece of a rebel battery, and otberwisefdistinguiehed iis commend. by annoying the evemy’s trains and their retreating columns. 4 800 of Genora! Hampton, acting as staff officer in the rebel service, was wounded. Butord’s Firet brigade came within fifty yards of tho rebel General Stuart, who narrowly escaped being cap- ‘tured. General Pryor, who has lately been reduced to the ranks, or gone in aa a private voluntarily, is attecbed to the cavairy that fought against us on Tuesday. Among the rebel prisonors are Lioutenant Colonel De- lany, of Cobb’s Legion; Lieutenant J. C. Hines, Company C, North Carolina cavalry; First Lieutenant KR. S. rice, Company E, Fourth North Carolina; Dr. H. 1. Bradley, Surgoon of Cobb's Legion; Jack Mathews, Company HI, Second North Carolina; A. A. Retbune, Fifth North Caro- lina, and Danl. O'Connor, Cobb's Legion—all wounded, ‘Captain Catsum, First North Carolina, was also captured. “The whole nomber of prisoners taken is sixty-four. ‘The rebel losa in kilied cannot fall sport of twenty-five. Our joss in killed was only one—Benjamin Lowder, Com- pany F, third Indiana. Subjoined is a list of our wounded :— ‘Lieut. Cyrus Wheelock, Company K, Ninth Now York. Sergeant A. Deming, Company D, Eighth linois. Sergeant Willard Cummings, Company I, Fighth Iii. Rois. Bergea.t James A, Bell, Company I, Eighth Ilinola, Sergeant George Masoy, Third Indiana. Patrick Moran, 000 of Duford’s teamstors, An aid-de- camp of Colone! Gamble, of the Eighth Mhi- ‘noig, and two orderlies. James Joyce, of the Third Jini) aua, and Andrew Keynoids, of the Bighth New York, were taken prisoners. A despat h from Genera! Stuart to a colone! command ing one of his brigades was captured. This cavalry expedition was eminently succeesful with but slight loss on our part, and proved agaim the superiority of our mounted men over Stuart's, who are met by us only to be driven back ingloriourly. About seventy five armed guerillas were seen in Fairfax yesterday, and thore were apprevensions of an atiack on the Hine Of the Orange and Alexendria Railroad last night Mr. D. P.
