ed States will 233 France, and one which the U hot aud cannot allow. The moment is at hand whes we sb ready to throw dowa our glove to every ! foreign fivader of this continent; for te waity all be | Awerica, like the combined sireng th of its lakes nd rivers, must be one and indivisible forever. Nor is the great republic of North America alone in the desire to weintain this nity. The smaller States of — South America are patriotically mov ng in the same dicection, and we may confidently hope to see @ combination of atl these Spanish-American reoublics, which will materially aid us ia our determination to maintain and insist upon the Monroe doctrine in all ite Integrity. The proper duty of the Emperor of the French, if be consult the happiness of his peo- ple. is to retire at once from the greatest diffi- wully that ever threatened his dynasty. His cousin, the Prince Napoleon, sces the dangers ahead, and it would be well for the Emperor himself if he also could be made to see them. af not, be will assuredly be the sufferer. As for the Prince Maximilian, who, it is said, in- tends to accept the throne if the action of the Awmembly of Notables be confirmed by the peo- ple, it és easy to see that the vote of “the people,” so called, will undoubtedly be fa- verable to him. But it will not be so easy to tonvinoe the American people that these votes, forced from the Mexicans by the superior power of arma, can be anything more than a compul- gory acquiescence im that which they have not the necessary elements of strength to repulse. Our rebellion, however, is now near its close; nd then it will be our duty not only to pre- serve every inch of Mexican territory to that nolghboring and friendly republic, but to expel from the continent of America every European invader who may dare to pollute ite soil. Movers Enrerprme.—The axiom that ‘there is nothing new under the sun,” though correct enough in regard to the origination of ideas, has but little application to their develepment. ‘There are but few of the great modern dis- coveries of which the germs were not known at some early period of time. In the extension and combi in of the crude conceptions of others lies the merit of modern inventors. But the merit is little if at all superior to that of the mind with which they originated. He that converts to profitable results what otherwise must have fain fallow is surely as much entitled to our admiration and gratitude as the man who tlings away with spendthrift recklessness the ottspring of his brain. In the completion of imperfect theories and in the advancement of art and science generally it must be admitted that the last half century ex- hibits greater progress than any corresponding period in the world’s history. And within that limited period of time itself how much have we improved on our own efforts. When our first railroad was built, some thirty yeare ago, an exieat of fifty miles was considered a gigantic enterprise. Now, not only is every State of the Union intersected by a network of these lines, but we are about to span the continent with one great road, extending nearly three thousand miles in length. How com- poratively few years is it since Pro- fe sov Morse was dunning government for a «mall grant to enable him to demonstrate the sticcess of his discoveries in electro-magnetism ax applied to the telegraph. Now, through the medium of these inventions, a large portion of the busivess of the world is transacted, and soon the two continents will be placed by them in hourly communication. Many of us remem- bee when the first vessel of Collins’ line of fast su:ling packets elicited our admiration and wonder, and when some gi xpression to the {var that a vessel which would only make a vir sized jollyboat for the Great Eastern would be “hogged” by her extreme length. What a revolution has taken place in our ideas in this regard. We now build steamers which ave equal to small towns in their capacity of accommodation, and which traverse the ocean without the remotest apprehensions of so un- puvtical a disaster. And asto those boasted works of the ancients which ebtained for the period when they were built the title of the Cyolopean age, what are they compared to the enterprises of our own time? The generation that cau undertake to tunnel the Alps and lake Superior, build the Suez Canal and bring t « principal cities of the four great divisions ol the earth into daily telegraphic intercourse with each other, bas surely made some steps in advance of them. Nor is it in works of con- struction alone that we exhibit our superiority over the generations that have preceded In tue art of war we have made strides so destruc- tive that they will in time render war impos- sible. When the rebellion broke out Admiral Dahlgren declared that it would be out of the power of any gun then in existence to throw an e lective shot from Fort Sumter into Charleston. (ur Parrott guns can now cast @ shell more than five miles, and a new discovery is an-* nounced by which, by a very simple arrange- ment of the charge, a ball can be despatched av additional four miles, or farther, actually, that an object can be seen at sea. When we have coalized the Irish sportsman’s dream of a gua thatean shoot round s corner we sball have bat little to improve upon in the engine- ry of war. ‘This is truly @ great age, and we are a great people. Conld we but find some means of of | quieting the nigger, we don’t know that we bave | anything more to wish fo for. Reconwracetton IN THE ‘Sours. Lee's Army dhadinths siesta Virginia, Exocution of a Deserter from the Union Army, &., &., ee. Mec. Edwin F. De Nyne’s Despatches. Forraass Mownor, Sopt. 17, 1865. We have had a lively time here inst evening aod to-day, on account of the arrival, by special boat lest evening, of Governor Andrew, of Massachusetts. Salutes were fired, and bands thumped aad tooted, until the gossips of Old Point had it fora well authenticated fact that the President, in propria persona, was on hand. Much surprise was manifested when it was discovered who the visitor really was. Accompanied by Major Gene- ral Foster and ataff, he proceeded to Norfolk op a ploasure visit, returning,‘as the Diowing of steam whistles in- formed me, at nine o’clook last evening. What the ob- Ject of this visit may be I am not qualified tostate— ether it be simply of pleasure or for the furtherance of some new visiovary acheme for the better conduct of the war. Governor Andrew ts to be, I believe, the guest of eral Foster during bis stay. ARRIVALS PROM BELLE L8LX, Yesterday four men, in the rough uniforms of rebel soldiers, arrived at the fortress from Newport’s News. ‘They proved to be four of our owa men, who had thus Gisguised themselves to facilitate their escape. They ‘were captured om the 18th of July last, in the first terrific charge of our troops on Fort Wagner. Three of them be- long to the Seventh Connecticut regiment. They repro- ent their sufferings during their weary journey toward their freedom ag terrible. How their escape was made is mot as yet known in detail; Dut they are heid for rigid examination. They left on the evening of the 9th of Sep- tember, without being perceived or molested in any manner. TROOPS GOING SOUTH. ‘They state that for some time past trains, to the num- ber of four or five per day, have been running troops Ubrough Richmond South. The very day that they took their unceremonious departure the city was ‘‘illumi- mated’ with camp fires and crowded with troops, all doubtless being burried on toward Charlestoa. ‘THR FORFIVICATIONS OF PETERSBURG they state to be quite formidable. They passed three lines of these and were not interfered with, doubtless on account of their uniforms. Though they were successful to their bold undertaking they did not lack hairbreadtn es- capes and persistent pursuit. Beyond the rebel lines and on the neutra! ground between the contestants they were in more danger of capture than in the very midst of their enemies; for now their uniforms, which bad been before a passport and safeguard, became the most likely means of their betrayal back to captivity. REBEL DEVICES FOR TAH CAPTURD OF DESRAIKRN rendered the position now a very ticklish one. Men are ongaged specially by the rebel government for tho appre- hension of such of thelr victims as may have taken “*French leave,” and the farmers roundabout combine for the same purpose. Althongh this brave little party was folly aware of these dangers and difficulties, hunger finally forced them to stop at a house for food one even- ing. Unfortunately, this happened to be the rendezvous of one of these same REBRL GOVERNMENT DETRCTIV RY whom, above alt things, they would have chosen to have avoided. In lien of having their wishos gratitied, they were queationed and cross-questioned by their hort, who, in short, claimed them as deserters from the rebel army. They ‘were not long In taking to their heels after this new chapter in the history of their misfortunes had been opened.
