Activity of Trade Between Europe and the Rebels via Bermuda. The Reconstruction Question in North Carolina. FREE SPEECH PROHIBITED. The Rebel Press and Our Foreign Relations, &., ae, be. Our Baltimore Correspondence, Baurmons, Sept. 9, 1863, News from the South by Way of Bermuda—Great Actict'y in Trade Beween Europe and the South by Way of the Bermudas— Extraordinary Speed of the Blockade Kun- ning Vessels—Cpinion of English, French and Spanish Naval Officers in Regard to the Defences of Charleston— Rebel Recomnoissance to the Line of the Baltimore and Ohso Railroad at Bath—The Substitute Business in Baltimore~Ulier Failure of the Cotton Crop in Illinois. T have derived the following facts from @ highly intelli. gent gentleman who has been spending several months in the Bermudas, and who left those delightful tslands only a few weeks ago:—The trado and commerce between Fur rope and the rebel Statos, by way of Kermuda, is im- mense, and is every month increasing. New vessels are coustautly eogeging in it. Ibe profiis of the business aro so great that the parties concerned in it can afford the occasional losa or capture of a veasel with her cargo; but, in point of fact, captures aro rare, Tho remarkable feature of tho trade is that it is all ope way, All tho articles of commerce come from Europe and go to the Houthorn States. No- thing except an occasional load of eotton or afew hun- dred barrels of turpentine goos from tho Southern States to Europe. Of the latter article, however, it may be sald that the price of it has advanced four hundred percent, and its shipment affords an immense profit. There aro largo quantities of it stored in sundry places in North Carolina, whence it is brought to Wilmington for shipment, But still the wonder is where the money comes trom to pay for all the cargoes that are sont to the Southern States, ‘These embrace not cannon, muskets and munitions of war alone, but articles of genoral household consumption, such as tea, refined sugar, wines, silks, cotton goods, cloth, end, indeed, almost every article of commerce Whenever a vessel is ready to leave Bermuda fer Wil mington, the steamer Robert E. Lee rans out of port two reconnoitre. Having ascertained that the coast is clear, intelligence of that fact is signalled to the vessel, and sho leaves port and makes all speod for Wilmington. ‘The steamers ongaged {9 this business are constructed with a view to groat speod. They can oasily make seven. teen and cighteen knots an hour, and can therefore with facility leave behind them any vessels in our navy. Once on the coust of North Carolina, thoy have means of entering the port of Wilmington which are said to be infallible, Bermuda has been crowded all summer with gentie- men from all parts of the south, who usually spend a fow weeks there before proceeding to Europe, From them my informant derived « great variety of inform@gtion in regard to the condition of mattow at the South, and the prospects of the rebel government, to which I will allade presently. There are also constantly at Bermuda many officers of the English, French and Spanish naval services, who fraternise together on torma of perfect Dbarmony, and with macy of whom my informant was on terms of intimacy, Many of these officers had receutly been at various pointe in the South, and particularly at Charleston, whero they were handsomely entertained by General Beaurogara, and had an opportunity (which of course they improved) of examtoing somowhat in detail the works for the defence of that place. At «dinner party given by one of the Spanian captains, shortly be fore my informant left Bermoda, and at which he way present, the subject of the attack and defence of Charies ton wan discuseed at great length, It was the unanimous opinion of the officers present—Engiish, French apd Spaniah—that the preparations for the defence of Charien on were such that it could not be taken, When it m re inom bered that this opinion ie that of officers who have made such subjects the study of their lives, and who were speaking of what they bad personally examined, their opinion is certainly entitled to some weight. Nous verrom:. ‘The Union forces at Bath, in Morgam count?, Virginia, thirty miles northwest of Harper's Ferry, wore attacked yeaterday by a party of about Ove hundred rebel exval- Ty, who drove Ip our pickets and engaged the main body of our troops. They were repulsed, however, and re treated, pureued by a Pennsylvania cavalry regiment. ‘The malitary authorities here say the afar a of no oon poquence, But it is more likely It wae a recomnoimance the force and position of our made in order to discov’ troops im that vicinity. The Baltimore and Ohio Mailroat in better guarded now than ever before, and I believe is porfectly safe. such i the opinion, too, of the travelling public and of the bumnesr community both here and at the Wert, am is indicated by the two well fitled daily pas sengor treine and the numerous crowded freight traine which pass over the road, But it is due to the publicand to the nations! credit, 00 lens than (9 the enterprining railroad company itself, to see that ther® is no mintake aboot the inaiter.
