Mr. Grose offered a preamble and resolution that the Street Commissioner be requested to presont @ report of the amonnt of damage done to the several parks by the United States troops, for the purpose of taking proper steps to have such amounts repaid to the Corporation of New York by the general government. Mr. Grom moved the adoption of the resolution , on the grdund that tho occupancy of the parks by the United States troops had been perfectly unnecessary, as there were many other places in the vicinity of the city where be thought they might have been quartered. Mr. Baaxron Roped no such resolution would be adopt- e4,and he thought ifany claim was to be made on the government at this time, they bad better begin WH those of the Union Defence Committee, and Rot with such a small amount as that which would be re- quired to put the different parks ia @ proper state of re Mr. Gross was Burprined at the gentleman's Ftatements, as he was satisfied that the city of New York had sus- tained damages to the amount of at least twelve or fifteen miltions of dollars, He understood the general govern ment bad to pay for the property of Joysiiona destroyed in rebel Virginia, and saw no roaaon why tho sume should not be done to this city. The government could have found many other places in this city for the disposal of their troops; He didnot think that. twenty thousand dollars would pay for the damage they had done tw our parks, and if the people of Virginia are to be pak! he did Det neo why the xame should not be done to New York. Mr. Baannon thonght it unnecessary at that time to discusa the propriety of having the parks used by the United States troops. They had claims dating as far back as 1861 for equipping and forwarding troops to the seat of war, and if it waa the intention to presa chime against tho general government, he thought it would be better to start with those first. ‘The resolution was adopted.
