WHOLE NO. 985L SHARLESTON. Despatches from Gen. Gilmore and Admiral Dahlgren. Gillmore’s Big Guns Hard at Work. THEW REBEL BATTERIES DISCOVERED Indifference of Our Troops to Danger. The Rebels Have Fifteen- Inch Guns, Firing on the City to be Soon Resumed., Reported Safety of the Brig-of-War Bainbridge, Bee Revs he W asurxcton, Sept. 5, 1863. Very full official despatches from General Gillmore and Admiral Dab'gren have been received at the departments Dy the recont arrivals from Morris Island, ‘The despatches from General Gillmore represent every- ‘thing as progressing favorably. Admiral Dahigren’s reports contain nothing of special pablic importance, as a violent storm had prevented active operations on the part of the fieet. Tho Monitors hhad rode out the storm admirably, not an accident bav- ‘Ang occurred to either of them. Both write in good spirits, and express the fullest con- fidence in the success of their operations against the city, which must in the end inevitably be captured. ‘The shelling of the city has undoubtedly been resumed Defore this time, as several guns had been placed in posi- tien which would reach Mr. Galen H. Osborne's Depatch. Monus Istanp, S. C., August 30, 1803. ‘THM NAVY BAR, A woek has elapeed since General Gillmore opened the portals of the city of Charleston by completing the destruc: ‘thon of Fort Sumter, yet Admiral Dahigren bas not taken ‘eis Monitors in, Alfairs are nearly at a standstill, merely ‘because the navy is doing nothing. The indignation and @isgust of every one ov shore at the backwardness of the feet are more and more manifest as the days goby. At sight our eves, straining across the channel, are rewarded by aserics of rockets and many bued lights burning from the decks of the flagship and the jron-clails as brilliantly ‘and as prettily as the fireworks in the City Hall Park; Dut those “flaming”? advertisements evidently me: nothing. Daylight is sure to bring to view the versels of the squadron lying at their easy anchorage, As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted oceaa. SRNERAL GULLMON#'S BATTERIES RESUME FIRB UPON SUMTER, To-day, agreeably to @ request from the Admiral, the Gre of our breaching batteries wero reopened upon Fort Sumter. A week in which to accomplish something of repairs in that dilapidated old ruin might not bave passed animproved by the enemy. During the solemn lull in affairs 1 was possible for the rebels to erect batteries and mount guns, even in tho midst of tho rubbish which occu pies the site of the ouce proud structure. So to-day we bave been bombarding. Though no answor was elicited from any guns within the fort, we have added a good deal to the battered appearance of the work. Upon the north- fast angle were two pieces pointing seaward when the firing began. To-night the wall in front of them is all torn ‘away , and one of the guns looks toward the sky ; while the other is aimed apparently at a point very near the centro ef the earth. The firing to-day has been very accurate. From one of the heavy rifle guns three projectiles were ploded one after another in precisely the same crater io the masonry. ‘ THE SULLIVAN'S ISLAND BATTERIES. A newly developed work on Sullivan's Island bas been indulging in extensive mortar practice yesterday and to day, exploding ral shells in close proximity to oar works. Whether at the distance of three miles they will itimately be able to injure us is yet to be seen. So far shey have given us no trouble from this point, THE ENKMY'S FIRR—SPLENDID NEMAVIOR OF OUR MIEN, Fort Johnson and all the works on James Island con- {nue a brisk fire upon our lines. Yet under this annoy- ce the engineers, the sappers and the guard of the enches continue slowly to advance, Old soldiers, ho have stood up in the fiercest contests of the insular campaign, and who have rushed with he fury of tigera upou the foe when a rebel ue was to be broken, are tried now as they To go ap with shovels msteat of rifles, to ! plain e\posure to the deadly missiles which hurtle erywhore about them, without the prospect of battle the excitement of the fray to stimulate them to heroic ds, require of the troops a stouter courage, a stead rve and # stronger will than merely to short and hot at ina fair aud epen “ight. Still there is no hanging wk among them, They march into dangers the hardest face with no manifest reluctance, and perform betr daily tasks with all the fortitude which an ited confidence in their commanding general and most sanguine expectations of bis ultimate suc can inapire. They only complain that the tron-clads doing othing in an, to assist them; and complaints are becoming rare, for, now that the y has accomplished so much, there is astroag and owing desire that the land forces shall complote the ork of taking Wagner, ( g and Sumter without any ral aid DRATH OF LARUTENANT COLONEL PURVLANCH. ‘Tho saddest occurrence of the bombardment was the ath of Lieutenant Colonel Purviance, commanding the ughty fi(¢h’ Pennsylvania Volunteers, who was killed Unis ruing by the premature explosion of one of oar own ie. A light fleld pieces had been ordered by genoral offleer of the trenches to open upon t Wagner, With singular carelessness, no warning the troops in front of the gun was given, and a time Durning ont sooner than was expected exploded tho jectile over the heads of our own troops in the ad. Several men of the Kighty Ofth were injured same explosion. The conduct of Colonel Beil, who cre the firing without proper precaution against xdest of this kind, has beon made the subject of « inquiry OFX.
