Avery tmpudent and daring atiempt at burglary took hoe during the middle of tho day on Monday at the of Mre, Munroe, No. $4 West Forty sixth street, Fifth and Sixth avenues, and alniost succeeded. About twelve o'clock M. special policeman Carpenter ‘wae alarmed by the neice of Mrs. Munroe, whostated that Durglars'were in the house, Having obtained the aid of Mr. Meoker, one of the assistants of Dr. Gilebrist, corner ‘ef Forty-vixth stroot and Sixth avenue, the officer entered ‘Who house and found it in great disorder; but the birds had flown. ¥% appears that during the morning Mrs. Penny, sister @f Mre, Munroe, who was absent in the coupury; went Out and left the premises iv charge of her daughter, & ‘very interesting young lady of about sixteen years of age. During her absence several burgiars—supposed from wertain evidences to have been four in number— entered the house, one having gained legal access to the fmterior under pretence of examining the gas metre. ‘Macy then seized hold of the young lady, fastened her arms back with a newspaper strap, and administered to ber a dose of chloroform, enough to deprive ber of ber penges and to keep her,as they supposed, from alarm- tog tho neighborhood. They ext tock her into fhe ‘collar tied her with a rope. Hi pa MS they ransacked the house, packing up ‘the silver, furs aud other valuable articles, ready for im. removal. They next began hel themselves: to certain delicacies found in the pantry, w' a young laty friend of the family rang the bell. Obtaining no an- mwer, she left, and returned several times during tho en- guing half hour. These reveated * calls” anparontly glarmed the burglars, as evidence remains that they must mepeie Seite ‘This wag at about half-past ten in the ning. Miss Muaroe about San peal recovered pate pone ‘when she went in sexrch of assietance. Officer Carpenter Some came to. her call, when sho inquired whother it Fn or struck nine.” ‘This would givo a cluo as to tho = ‘the outrage, as she must havo been inseusible fvom before that time. The house wns searched, but the peas decamned. They had, however, left their fe bebind. and the affair is now in the bands of the for investigation. . Emancipation in Sarinam. [From the Salem Observer, August 15.) @n the 1st of July the slaves of Surinam, a Dutch eolo- im South America, were emancipated in accordance ch a law adopted by the Legislature of Holland on the Sth of August, 1862, with tho cordial sanction of the it. The slawer of the colony form an ‘ity of the total population, number- fag adout 45,000 persons, in an aggregate population of 1,000. Wepnespay, August’ 2é—¢ P. M. Money was in active request to-day, and the de- mand was readily supplied. The old commission houses had all the money offered whioh they conld mee at Sper cent, and had balances to lend to more active operators at6and7. There seems @0 be no difficulty in borrowing all that is wanted. Business paper continues unchanged, and the cur- eency certificates of indebtedness are-firm at 994. Gold rallied again this morning to 12244, at which it remained until afternoon, when it,rose to 129. Two hundred thousand dollars made up the @ay’s export by the Cunard steamcr. Exchange hot active at 13534. The decline which was observed in stocks yes- terday has. continued to-day, to the extent of 10 per cont in Harlem, and 1 or 2 per cent all round the list. The best prices of the day were made Barly,on the street. Comparing the close of the Call at first board with yesterday evening’s rates, we note the following differences:—Pacific fell 2 per cent, New York Central rose 34, Erie 4, Har- tem fell 4, Reading 34, Michigan Central 2, Beuthern old 1, guaranteed 334, Illinois Central 34, Pittaburg 24, Galena 1, Toledo 3, Rock Island 4, Fort ,Wayne 134, Prairie du Chien 4; Chicago and Northwestern rose }4; Chicago and Altou preferred recovered % from yesterday morning's sales. The feeling at the close of the call was better than, during the market; but the dulness sontinued on the street and at the one P. M. pub- lic call. At the second board prices were again Jower; Harlem sold down to 169%, Erie to 11914, New York Central to 13534, Southern old to 106, Galena to 11234, Toledo to 119%, Fort Wayne to SF. On the other hand, Illinois Central was steady at morning’s rates, and Pittsburg sold at 10414, half per cent advance. Some sales were made of Illinois Central, seller fosty days, which bear the appearance of a reference to the London market. The reports of the L4th instant from Lon- don indicate an increasing demand for our railroad pecuriti most activity being shown in Eric, New York Central and Illinois @entral. Money was in good demand, owing to the operations of the har- west, and the bank rate was four per cent, while Bhort loans on government securities were at two percent. The tendency of prices was noted as good. The time is probably not vory far distant when governmente will be here, as IM Englan great speculative stock, and it wonld probably well if it could be so, The public feeling ex- presses itself more sensitively in speculation in such securities than in any other and it is a question whether a healthy freedom of this kind of speculation would not enlighten us all a good deal on the true temper of the people'with refe- rence to matters of national policy. Meanwhi it is gratifying to know that the conversions into the five-twenty loan continue steady, and we are informed of heavy purchases of various government bonds for stment by capitalists who think railroad securities do not yield them that return in interest and security combined which they seek. The sixes of 1881 are attracting am good deal of attention in this man 8 they will pay six per cent in gold for some eighteen years fo come, thus covering atime in which itis rea ponable to suppose that the national debt will be adjusted at a lower rate of interest. The shorter foans appeal to ba class of buyers who have the payment of principal at an carly day in view; and altogether we are gratified to note an attention springing ap on this subject which the intrinsic so- lidity of the securities warrants. The four P. M. public call showed a further slight decline from the second board. Very contrary opinions are expressed about the nature of the present check in prices, and the bears have taken courage to sell short considerably to-day nd yesterday. Those who have been buying @tocks all along maintain that it ie nothing but ® necessary and healthy reaction, and in many capes take the opportunity to increase their inte- west at the decline. There can be mo question ‘that the supply of money is cqual to the wants of @peculators; and, as we have often had occasion to peer men who want money largely can afford higher for it thamthose who have emaller One per cent of foterest does not figure Wor machin a stock specn!iion, and most men would rat! r get their loane auieky Ot six then exert es $9 pay only tive: s ih Satboraloeg & 100 ‘Mich guar....1353, 0186 The following is a statement of coal transported NEW YORK HERALD, THURSDAY, Rock TaPand.,.1133¢ Fort Wayne. ay eae. ui Terre Haute pi 85 89 ohio & NW. 36 re] on the Delaware and Hudson Canal:— Belaware and Rudson Canal Pennsylvania Coal Company ..
