FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Sarvrpay, August 22—6 P. M. Money was in more active demand to-day; but the abundance was equal to all requirements. The certainty of two days’ interest which attendsa loan made on Saturday generally brings out nearly all the loanable balances in the street. We quote the rete at 6, with the usual exceptions at 5 and 7. Gold was lower this morning, on the news from Charleston by way of the Richmond papers. The business done was very small, at 124% 9 124%. The steamers took out $151,000 this morning. Ex- change was inactive at 13734, the merest fraction above the price of gold. Stocks have been exceedingly active, and the speculative temper seems as strong as ever. ‘Erie vecovered from the depression of yeaterday, and was largely bought before the board this morning, the same operators, in many instances, buying at 120 a. 121 stock which they parted with as low as 11744119 yesterday. The feeling in Erie com- municated itself to the number of persons who waited to judge of the day’s prospects before ope- rating, andthe board opened with considerable buoyancy. Cumberland rose %, New York Central fell %, Erie rose 2}4, the preferred stock was without change; Harlem rose 3%, and fell back 2%, closing 172%; Michigan Central rose 2, Southern guaranteed fell 4%, Iilinois Central ‘rose 124; Pittsburg was a shade Jower—say 34; Toledo fell 34; Rock Island opened nearly up to last night’s figures, but fell off four per cent; Terre Haute preferred was 1 lower, andthe volume of business was well distributed over the list. At the one P. M. call strength was gained in the market. Every decline brought ina new lot of buyers, and prices were marked up ac- eordingly. Speculation has become more than epidemic—it is domesticated with us, and the in- stances of fortunes made in s short space of time, from trifling beginnings, have operated to draw an immense crowd of speculators away from their own occupations into Wall street. How many have the wisdom and self-denial to take their Profits and go is a question not easy to settle, , though it is safe to predict that many of them will persevere until, in imitation of predecessors in all speculations, they leave their bones to bleach round the Stock Exchange. There was no second session of the board, and mo second public call of stocks; but specula- tion continued late on the street, and mostly at higher prices. New York Central was done at 133, Harlem 177%, Redding at 11924 a %, and the gene- ral feeling appeared to continue hopeful. ~ The holders of the second mortgage bonds of the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company aro notified that on and after Monday, August 24, they on surrender of their bonds at the office of the company, receive certificates for $1,200 in the preferred 7 per cent stock of this company, se- oured by mortgage on fts railroad, for each of said bonda, and the coupons issued therewith. The Chicago and Alton dividends on the prefer- ved and common stock will be paid on the 25th instant, to all stockholders, without distinction as to registry, and holders of certificates not regis- tered with the United States Trost Company are notified to exchange their old certificates for new ones.
