Potatoes have fallen in ten days from thirteen end a half to three dollars per barrel, four to five and etx dollars, and other articles im proportion. First rate beef could be purchased in market this morning for twenty-five cents per pound; thirty-five to forty cents ‘Ras been the ruling price heretofore. If these shipments @oatinue the sale of cargoes will hardly pay the freight. ‘There will be a change, however, when the West India ade is open for the winter. Then much of the goods ‘eoming from up the river will be shipped to foreign mar- sete, and I have no doubt there will be quite a large busi- wessdone in that way this winter, There is na popula- ton bere now to consume the large amount.of produce arriving, and what are. left have to live in the most eco- wemical manner, They cannot afford to buy more than enough to supply themselves from day today. Captain Wm. G. The particulars of the affair are as follows:— REPORTS OF A BLOCKADE RUNNER AND SMUGGLER. Lioutenant Commander Jas. B. Gillis, commanding the United States gunboat Commodore Morris, also, the fleot on the York river, received notice that on the banks of Piankatank river a noted blockade runner and daring guerilla, named Pritchard, made his rendezvous, and if an expedition, judicionsly managed, was sent out on a certain day his capture would be mdde certain. CAPTAIN HOTCHKISS, who, in his little boat, the General Putnam, had been doing blockade.duty on the York river and tributaries for a long period, had an interview with Captain Gillis, and proposed to him a plan whereby Prichard might be easily captured.
