Sometimes they accept the doctrine of chances, and vake | the screaming missile and its humming, whistling frag- iments, with no attempt to dodge thom; but a driver struck, or a horse :naimed, or a wagon shivered to pieces, or ® team frightened and tearing demoralized back through the camps, nightly attests the dangers to which theco faithful men are exposed. ‘Tu SHY OF TH FROOPS. One of these days the story of this siege is to be told in detail; not yet, however, We must wait a while belore, by a description of their labors, full justice can be done to the gallant soldiers now putting forth their efforts for the reduction of the rebel works and the capture of Charleston, How they landed upon this narrow, barren Dauk of sand in the face of a fearful flre; how impetuous- ly they pressed forward, taking battery after battery; how nobly, though vainly, thoy fought at Fort Wagoer— those are already matters of history. But the undaunted spirit which impels them, the unswerving confidence, which animates them in their present duties, can scaroe- Jy be realized, in the sun's Hlerce glare at noou, in the Still, miasmatic air of midnight, in all the hours of the hottest month of the year, when other armies are appa- rently rest.ag from their tolls, the troops on Morris Island aro cheerfully striving, valiantly fighting, tirelessly dig- ging, steadily advancing to secure the prize which lies across the channel, e mile or two away. SHARPSHOOTERS. Lurking behind rifle pits in front of Fort Wagner are a few rebel sharpshooters of the truest aim, armed with weapons of remarkable range. ‘They fire atall who are 80 venturesome as to expose themselves by day, sending 8 bullet, fasbioned like the celebrated Whitworth bolt, at @marvolloas distance toward our lines, Faster than sound these missiles travel, and in the daytime the least exposure at the front is perilous, To circumvent the authors of this source of annoyance, Major ‘Plympton, Acting Assistant Inspector General, has selected the best marksmen from the different regiments, and has organ- ized a corps of sharpshooters, with which he hopes to thwart thorebol riflemen, Already our “erack shots” have partially accomplished their mission in bringing to the sand a number of the enemy’s sharpshooters. COLONEL GHATIIELD, After every severe eogagement, when the lists of the killed and wounded are scanned, it seems as if a special Providence had directed the messengers of death against the best beloved and bravest of us all. We thought so when Strong and Putoam fell before Fort Wagner. Espe Cially true does it appear pow, as we see in alate Now ‘York paper a notice of the death of- Colonel John 8. Chat fleld, of the Sixth Connecticut Volunteers, He was an officer whose military abilities were of a very fine order, and whose place it will be difficult to OH. Always courte. ous and affable to avout him, in camp be was a strict and impartial disciplinarian, and in action one of the coolest and most intrepid of men. Tsaw him at the battle of Pocotaligo, in October last, He then had com- mand of the First brigade of Brannan’s division, and led the advance whicb drove the enemy from their batecries. His dauntiess valor on that occasion secured the per- sonm thanks of Generals Brannan and Mitchel. Lator in the action he was severely wounded in the side and was carried from the field, Colonel Good, of the Forty seventh Pennsylvania, succosded him. After a brief season o: rest at home he returned to the field, tm- pationt at the separation from his regiment, and reccived in the desperate aesanit of the 18th ult. bis fatal wounds. ‘That was a.desr and disastrous fight for us, at the price of such men as Strong and Patuam and Chatfleld. The stock market was active and variable to- day. Before the board it was very strong. Erie sold at 11734, against 115% last evening, and Illi- noia Central at 124%. Erie fell to 116%, with very large sales indeed; Central fetl 23%, Southern old 2%, Illinois Central'l, Pitts- burg 1%, Fort Wayne 1, Rock Island 1%, Galena X{, Chicago and Aiton 14, Terre Haute, %. On the other hand, Michigan Central rose 1, Reading 134, Hudson %, Harlem 1, Erie preferred 5%. The business done was maderate; a good’ many of the sales seemed to be to realize profits, while others were credited to the bears. The commission houses report large outaide orders to buy. Governments were inactive; State stocks and bonds were very dull. At the close of the board there was a rush to sell stocks, which caused a pretty general depression. Erie fell off %, Reading 134, Pittsburg 1%, &o., &c. Atthe one P.M. call in the public board there was some disposition to sell stocks, which was freely met, however, by new buyers, and eae | 18 were consequently kept at about the prices made fo the regular board room after the call. The at- tendance was large and the business extensive. At the afternoon board there was a sharp rally in Central and Erie, and the general market was bettet, though Reading fell off three per cent. under an increased supply of stock. The excite- ment when Erie was struck on the call was very great indeed. The stock had been selling in the street at 115%; it now touched 11914, new buy- ers having evidently entered the market. At the close of the session the disposition to buy was rather general. At the four P. M. call of the public board there was no material change in quotations,‘and the whole market closed strong.
