A day or two since, in Clone! Montgomery's Second South Carolina rogiment, ove of tbe privates in Compmny D, a burly negro, relused to obey an order given him by Disofficer. The officer of the day reported bie mutisous Conduct to the Coloxel, who instructed the offieer to in form the negro that he was not trifling with bim,and that.if he then refused to obey the order to go tothe gvard bouse—an attempt to execute which be bad before Tesisted—hbe would be at ence sbot down, The officer ofthe day approached the negro, waried Lim of the con- wequence Of refusing obey his order, aud again o dered him 40 the guard house. The negro did not moye, and the officer them iuformed bim if he did tet obey before ho counted three he should firo ne, two, three, were tlowly told off, three seconds elapsed after the word ‘Ub ee was pronoun: ed, aud the nogro not obeying, the off cer shot bim down, mortally wounding him. This aalu- \\tary example was not lest upon the rest of the regiment, Tt had an excellent effect, and insubordination will here- after rarely occur in the Second South Carolina Volunteers. Colovel Montgomery's sty'e of diccipline is regarded as the only efficacious une for the negro regimente, whose peculiar temperaments require that punishment to be effectual should follow close on the heels of any derelic- ticp of duty. Fort Wagner, when not kept sileot by ‘the iron-clads and our mortar and rifle batteries, dwpects 4 burp fire of cavisicr and grape on our working parties, makiog the air above them vocal with the noude- ecript missiles they favor us with. The rebels seem t | Bmvea peculiar relish for broken bottles and giasswaro, @id bits of crockery, rusty nails, fragments of cooking @tensile and all sorts of odds and ends which may inflict ‘wounds, and these missiles they pour ‘nto our lines with ‘am totenso zest and no little spite. A Brook's rife gup, on the portbenst angie of Fort Sumier, was vigorously ‘worked by tbe rebels, who cndeavored to drive off the Grigate andM oojtor. The range of the gum was some- what extraordinary, but the practice wae poor. The hots struck the water far beyond tbe ships, but di not f.0 single wstance to day§ strike them. They paid not (the slightest attention (o the grim old fort, but continued eo explode their shells in and about Wagner. The firc of Battery Gregg, from a ten inch Columbiad, was no better han thet of Sumter, though it did elicit an occasional hot from the frigate; whereat a deep silence fei] vpop ‘the celebrated Cumming’s Point work fora while. — ‘These bombardments are of daily cecurrence, and serve to keep the enemy in 8 contioual state of alarm apd trvu- Die.
