The transfer books will close on the L5th and reopen on the 25th of August. We obtain the following facts relative to the business of the road for the last six months from an official source :— ‘The gross receipts of this company from January 1 to June 30, 1868, amounted to $866,525 50, and the amount deducted for proportion due the Joliet and Chicago, Térre Haute, Alton and &t. Louie, Alton Packet Company, &c., was $154,368 33, leaving the earnings of the Chicago and Alton Railroad $682,187 17. The expenses for the same period -amoupted to Lit od 31, leaving the sum of $311 {651 86 to be added to credit of ‘income: The amonnt at credit of income account on Jan 1863, was $143,137 77, which, added to the it half year, to June 30, 1863, makes a total eredit of income on July 1 of $454,789 63. ‘The interest on the mortgage bonds up to June 30 takes an amount of $124,260; the dividend of three and a bel ber cent on preferred stock takes $86,365 86, ani dividend of two and a Aalf per cent on the common stock $45,834 95, leaving an ++ $4,724,075 99 88,350,213 45 2,100,748 33 221,207 44 Debit baiasce; July’ 30 108, Post Oftice drafts. . ‘| g. g- months old, who was accidentally poisoned by its mother. Mrs, Corrigan, it appoars, gave (he child eight drops of morphive in mistake for sweet spirits of nitre, and before tha error was discovered the infant was seized with con- vulsions. Medical aid was then procured, but the child died in a few minutes after the doctor arrived. The readered a verdict of ‘Accidental death,” exonerating the mother from all blame, Four Daownep.—Thomas F. Collins, a boy about twelve years old, whose parents reside in Eighty-seventh street, near Fourth avenue, was found drowned Thurs- day at the foot of Thirty-fourth street, East river. De- ceased had been missing since the 12th inst., and is mapa to have been drowned while bathing. Coroner in held an inquest. Thomas Finley, @ boy about eleven years of ogo, was found drowned at the fost of Hubert street Thureday by ofticers Yale and Walling. The was taken to the late residence of deceased, No. 11 Walker street, where Coroner Wildey held ait inquest, Farat Faun row 4 Wirvow.—Charlotte Francis Bur- ‘nett, a child about two years old, fell from the fifth story window of the premises 138 East Twenty-ninth street on .| ‘Wednesday, 4nd was instantly iillod. Coroner Ran- ney held an inquest. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL, Famar, July 31—6 P. M. ‘The money market continues as easy as could be desired. Money is offered in large. amounts to the’ Jeading brokers at 5 per cent, and at 6 the specu- latorg in the light fabrics find ne difficulty in get- ting supplied.. There is less caution than there ‘was some time since in scrutinizing margins; rail- way stecks are improving in the opinion of bankers, as @ collateral, and those which payregular divi- dends stand as high as any other class of securi- ties. Wall street appears to be son that im a country: of great internal United States the great corporatic on the traffic of the country must in ‘doa very profitable ‘business. Debt certificates are ateady. Mercantile paper continues to be! quoted at'6 per cént'for strictly prime nanies, and'6}/a €34 for good mercantile paper. “ Gold advanced to-day to 12934, closing at five P. fi. at 129. Exchange sold at 141% 8 142 for bankers’ bills. No special cause is assigned. for the advance in gold and bills;. but it was, evident, some days since, that unless we heard of the fall of Charleston the tendency of the market would rather be toward reaction after the. recent heavy dedline: There will be a heavy specie export to- morrow. Gold will fall, of course, événtually, to par. But this event is far off; and meanwhile the premium may rise considerably if we have.no more tiflitary successes. “The stock market opened weak this morning, and there was rather a disposition to improve the, reaction by putting out some sellers’ options. But - at the close of the first board the decline brought indresh buyers and the market soon recovered strongth, These tentporary reactions; which ere ‘the invariable accompaniments of 's ‘tising market, serve to frighted inexperienced operators out of their stocks for the benefit of older and more cool-headed speculators. At the first board | Oumpberiand fell off §% per cent, Quicksilver 1, New York Central, 1, Erie 114, Harlem 2, Erie preferred 1, Hudson 234, Reading 24, Michigan Central 4, Southern ofd 134, Dlinola Central.134, Cleveland and Pittsburg 1, Galena 34, Terre Haute 4, Toledo 24, Book Island 3; Port’ Wayne 1, &0., &c. State stooks were steady; Missouris 44 better. Govern- ments were steady, withoutactivity. After the beard there was a rally'in the whole market, and at the one P. M, call the transactions show an ad’ vance on the active shares of 48 1 per cent all round. Erie sold at 103 against 101% a¢ the first boarg. People who sold two mornings since at 104 apfilbeed to-be quite eager to get in agein at the decline; no one seems to look for reaction of more than 1a 2 per cent. At the sec6nd board the upward movement was continued, and the market became very buoyant. The advance’ was resisted by the regular bear-operators, who tried todammer some of the leading fancies; but their efforts appeareg to have ng effect in checking the advance, while the existence of a bear interest will naturally impart strength to the next upward surge. Erie rose %, Central }, Southern %, Fort Wayne 1, Rock Island %, &c. Central was espe- cially strong, selling, dividend off, at 12534. It is understood that a new party, with headquarters at Albany and Saratoga, has been formed to put up the price of Central, and operators who are sup- posed to be in their secrets talk of an extra divi- dend and 150 for the stock. It ought to sell as high as Hudson River. At the four P. M. call the market was very strong indeed. Few stocks were offered for sale, and every one wanted to Muy. The fellowing were the closing quotations of the day:— U86's,'81,reg.104 9 105 US 68,'61,c00.106% = 106 730 106 34 & 106% oo 2 OT Hudson River 160% a 152 Harlem. 124dy 1 'e alluded the other day toa bear movement jissouri sixes. It'may not be generally known in Missouri that the names of Governor Gamble and 6 prominent member of Congress from St. Louis are used by the sellers of Missouris in a way which, if the statements of the speculators are to be believed, would lead to the belief that those officiala are not acting as friends of the State credit. Among other nonsensical statements set afloat is one that the State is responsible for a quantity of scrip issued by the ranaway rebel Claib. Jackson, and Governor Gamble fs quoted as having stated that the State would have to re- deom this scrip. Itis not to be believed that the Governor knows 60 little of the State constitution and has so little rogard for the credit of the State 6 to make any such assertion, It is well, how- ever, that citizens of Missouri, who have so much at stake, should be made aware that these state- ments are afloat; and it is also well that Governor Gamble should have an onportunity of making an example of the Wall street speculators who are ‘using his name so freely. ‘The business of the Sub-Treasury was as follows to-day morning were “148,686 298 57, and the balance $2,014,389 16, f y The Long Island Bank has declared « semi nual dividend of four per cent, free of on demand; the Mapbattan Company have de- clared a semi-annual dividend of four per cent, 108 mo r -. 118; bushels at 600, , Barley and 00s S00 Mich So'@Wi RR er | Unned . “100 do. 87% CaNDLas were quiet, without change in prices: ed BA = 2 ax Serr mon vey gus eseing Bi, prinn at 86; Too00 Teas 6% 900 ao Ht goody sea Hee, ates 90%0.; ordinary!
